    - # Days Between Dates Formula Question Say I have two columns (A and B) containing dates and I want to know how many days there are between the dates. I know that if I use the formula =B1-A1 I'll get the number of days between the dates if the formula cell is formatted as a number. However, say cell B1 does not contain a date (not filled in yet) I get a huge negative number. I don't want that to appear. I want a zero (0) to appear. Is there a simple formula that will calculate the number of days between the dates yet result in a 0 if column B doesn't have a date. Column A will always have a date in it.     - Help with Array Formula with Embedded Lookup Hi, I have two tables with two columns each which I am displaying below in csv format: Table # 1: Store, Sales A, 5000 B, 4000 C, 6000 D, 2000 Table # 2: Store, Region 1,North 2,South 3,North I need to fill a table with the following format: Region, Total Sales North, <Total sales for North> South, <Total sales for South> I need hep with the <Total sales formulas>. I know a workaround is to create an additional column next to Table 1 to display the Region and then use SUMIF. However, this is not something that I can do in this situation. I tried the following formula, with A8="North": =SUM(IF(VLOOKUP(Table1_Col1,Table2,2,0)=A8,Table1_Col2,0)) However, this formula gives me 17,000 as result (instead of 11,000). If I replicate the formula row by row (in non-array format), it does work... Any help is greatly appreciated! But please remember that I need only one formula in one cell. Thanks!     - Being saved to a temporary document I've got several users in a subnet who are experiencing an intermittent problem when saving Excel files. They get an error message: Your changes could not be saved to '...', but were saved to a temporary document named '...'. Close the existing document, then open the temporary document and save it under a new name. The first '...' is the original file name; the second '...' is a bunch of numbers. The new file with the numbers in the name is saved in the same location, and does not have an extension. I've found a bit of information on Microsoft's support pages about this, but it only tells what the result of the error is. It doesn't tell me in any way what is causing this problem. The users all have full control of the network shares where these files are. We are certain that files experiencing this problem are not being accessed by multiple users simultaneously. The files are not read-only. The problem is intermittent. The client computers all have Windows 2000 Professional. The share is NTFS. Does anybody know why this is happening?     - Why CELL("format",A1) doesn't return something like "#.##"? ...and other rants I'm trying to compare the displayed value of two formatted cells. The idea is to detect the equality between 1.2345 and 1.23 when the format is "#.##" without resorting to VBA. This is Excel 2000, SP3. So I decided that this might work (may be wrapped): =IF(TEXT(A1,CELL("format",A1))=TEXT(B1,CELL("format",B1)),"equal","unequal") Unfortunately, CELL("format",A1) returns "F2", which is incompatible with the format string required by the TEXT() worksheet function. The above conditional actually evaluates to "equal" -- TEXT(A1,CELL("format",A1)) and TEXT(B1,CELL("format",B1)) both evaluate to "F2". Is this silly or what? So I came up with this rickety workaround (probably wrapped): =IF(FIXED(A1,MID(CELL("format",A1),2,99))=FIXED(B1,MID(CELL("format",B1),2,99)),"equal","unequal") I use MID() to return the number that CELL("format") returns after the "F", although I can't believe I have to resort to this. Isn't there a better way? ----------------- While I'm B&M'ing, entering/editing a formula in the Conditional Formatting FormulaIs TextBox is enough to drive anyone crazy.     - Sorting multidimensional tables/multiple selections I have several big matrices (1200*50) on different worksheets. It is a time-series data, so row headings are dates and column headings are firms. Cells are stock earnings, every worksheet using a different principle for calculating them. I need to sort this data like this: every row (daily revenues) in the first matrix (1. worksheet) in a descending/ascending order and all the other matrices should sort accordingly. This is because I need for example the smallest five values from the first matrice's rows and then the according values of those five firms from the other matrices. So I should find a way to bind the cells together somehow... It would even be tolerable if I could do this with two matrices only, or with a 3-d table they would constitute. Of course it would be easier to use a method for a n-dimensional table. Some other way? If every cell would "remember" its column heading ("firm") then maybe I could use that to find the necessary cells from the other matrices... Is this possible in Excel? Some other program (free/free trial) that could be useful?     - Chart 'crowding' problem. Chart suddenly overlaps axis text. My manager created several chart sheets on his system (currently Windows 2000, Excel 2002 I'm pretty sure...he's in a meeting so I can't get his SP#). The charts look good, have a couple added lines to split the quarter visually into three months (the X-axis is the day of the quarter), and it displays both X- and Y-axis labels. When I open them on my system (Windows XP, Excel 2002 SP 2) they look fine. But the following day when I open the workbook the charts are now a little larger and are overlapping the axis labels...very annoying! Any idea why this is happening? The workbooks are automatically updated (they pull in data via MS Query) at night using a scheduler and VB code (Workbook_Open). I set the scheduler to open Excel in a minimized window.     - Copy chart? Exercise #35 (moving right along) had me make a chart on the same sheet as the data. No problem. Then it says to "copy the embedded chart to the worksheet range beginning at...." When I click on the chart area, it *is* selected, but I can't see any way to Copy. The Edit function in the main menu has 'Copy grayed out. Ctl-C just beeps.     - Dafaults for new Worksheets I have a file that I continually add worksheets to. With each new worksheet I have to reset the page set-up with regards to margins; header and footers etc. I assumed that copying a correct worksheet to the new one would simply copy over all my requirements but it doesn't.     - Hide rows with zero value? just wondering how I would be able to hide rows on sheets if some cells are blank? the cells contain formulas they are only blank because `zero values` in >tools>options>view is unchecked. I have a sheet set up to SUMIF values from about 16 other sheets, and it returns the values depending on 72 corresponding codes, I would like to hide any of the 72 rows of data that are blank. the values returned will change on a week to week and daily basis, so I would like to be able to use the same design for each new week, hope that makes sense.     - Slow Menus and screen flickers Hi all, I fired up my PC today and all of the Office Apps (version 2003) are suffering from very slow menus. The menus are slowly appearing from an opaque ghosted image to the full menu. This all takes a couple of seconds and is very annoying. This only happens with the Office apps ( and to a lesser degree IE6). The screen also flutters a bit when redrawing. I have used the Office Repair feature and updated my video driver with no resulting change. Is there some setting that will fix this? BTW, This is not the Show Full Menu option.     - VLOOKUP I have the following formula in a given worsheet called 'Master Fe' =VLOOKUP(A2,'Re-Arrange'!$2$8000,3,FALSE) 'Re-Arrange' worksheet contains 7 columns and thousands of rows (first column is lookup value, column 3 contains a value to be returned to 'Master Fe'. The reference array is sorted correctly and the first proper (uppermost) value is always returned. A problem exists though when the lookup value appears more than once (may appear up to 4 times in array). Since array is sorted, lookup value may exist in 4 consecutive rows, or 3, or 2, or just 1 row. Whenever more than 1 lookup value exists, only the first uppermost value is returned, never the second or third or fourth.     - What is wrong with this COUNTIF formula? Hi, I'm sure its a very obvious mistake I've made, but this is the firs time I've attempted to use Excel. I am typing in the following formula to find a percentage of a numbe of values, but to ignore any values that are zero or less. The value are changeable so it is vital that all cells that could be filled ar considered. I used the COUNTIF function so only values greater tha zero are considered. This is what i entered:- > =SUM((F8,I8,L8,O8,R8,U8,X8,AA8)/800%)/COUNTIF(F8,I8,L8,O8,R8,U8,X8,AA8,">0") It doesn't look right...i've tried without some brackets entering > =SUM(F8,I8,L8,O8,R8,U8,X8,AA8)/800%/COUNTIF(F8,I8,L8,O8,R8,U8,X8,AA8,">0") But it still comes up with the "The formula you typed contains a error" warning. I know there is a keyboard shortcut to move and freeze window panes in Excel 2000 (rather than moving the dividers around with the mouse) because I saw someone do it once.     - Define a range name using VB I have a macro setup that imports and copies data from two source files into an excel spreadsheet. What I want to do after I have imported all of the information is to select the data, and then define it as a name for use in a pivot table.     - Do I need to create a database or something? I've got Excel 97 and with it have created my own bookeeping system. I'm using Excel to record basic bookkeeping data and to automatically calculate balances. In one workbook there are 4 sheets, representing 4 accounts (Bank, petty cash, expenses, balances). I've just filled in all the sheets for March and printed the workbook. So, I've got one Excel file for March. I've also arranged for a template, so when I come to fill in data for April, I'll have to open the template, take note of March balances, and put them onto April's workbook along with all the transactions for April. All this will work fine, but I just wondered if there was a way for March balances to somewhow automatically appear in the April workbook. I was wondering if that required a database.     - Charts have X axis at the top? I just tried to create a couple of charts and every one places the X Axis at the top when showing expenses. That is the numbers display in the lower right quadrant. The worksheet displays expenses as a negative value and this is what I want... numbers in parens.     - Does anyone have a "save" solution? Greetings, I've hunted around and couldn't find a solution :( Perhaps someone ha some wisdom for me? As a gift, I am creating some custom templates to assist a friend. Th templates will be saved into files that must eventually be given t others for whom work was done (i.e. an electronic saved file, instea of paper files.) The content of the file must be viewable an reprintable. The dilemma...I do not want my custom work given away or reused b anyone but my friend. The protection options I've explored and th "read only" status still permits the saved files to be used/edited t create other new files...so that won't work. My friend is not terribly sophisticated with computer use so th solution for saving these files must be easy. I'm rather new to Exce (no VBA experience.) I've thought of saving the files to an html (n bueno) or some other format like Adobe, but my friend does not hav Adobe. What am I missing for an easy solution? Anyone have a good idea?     - Format/Cells/Effects... I use Format/Cells/Effects when typing a chemical formula Subscript into a cell (A3 for example). It is desirable, for easy reference, to have that formula appear in another cell (say, Z195) without my intervention. It seems simple enough to enter "=A3" in Z195. It "almost" works, except that the Subscript format is lost. I have tried to various formats schemes for both cells but have not found how to maintain the subscripts.     - Can I count the number of cells that contain data? Hi all, I am creating a spreadsheet that is a chart and each day I track an item and enter a date. Can I just count the number of cells contain dates...I am not interested in calculation of contents or averages. All that I care is that excel can see that I have entered data in that cell or row and it counts it as one and keeps a running total. So, if I have data entered in 5 cells in a particular row, it will give me a running count of how many cells have the data, in this case 5, and show that number at the top of my sheet somewhere that I can see it easily. The columns in a pivot table display arrows that, when clicked, display the values in the column, which the user can pick to filter the pivot table.     - Transfer info from one sheet to another Hi all. I'm having a wee problem and was wondering if any one out there coul please help me. I have created a sheet in Excel which contains 8 columns. Column A contains peoples names and the other seven columns contain time. What i am hoping to do, is transfer peoples names and the times for th column selected onto another sheet that i have created. So, for example, if i select column C, all the people who have a tim in that coulmn will be transfered onto the other sheet. Basically, it is for a rota system for my work. The 'weekly' rota shee contains my staff and the times and days that they are working thi week. The other sheet is a 'daily' rota sheet and i only want the name and times of the peope who are working on that day to be shown on thi sheet I have thought about using the SELECT INTO statement, but i a struggling to make it happen. I have attached my 'rotas' so you ca have a loook if it helps.     - sorting macro ok, here is my issue: What I do now:I have one sheet that has all of my raw data, I need t sort out the data, then cut the rows containing particular fields ont other worksheets. for example: for a cars table: model/ color/ engine/ honda red v6 ford blue v4 toyota silver v6 Geo blue v4 Kia yellow v8 I want to cut out all the rows containg a "v6" and paste them ont another worksheet using a macro, then cut out all the leftover blu cars and paste them onto another separate worksheet.
