    - Sorting and Displaying data I have some data, a list of names with locations and a single number. Something like: Steve 4 Boston Mary 3 Washinton Al 6 Boston Frank 2 Chicago Mort 8 Boston I want to have a seperate sheet that automatically lists the people from each city, sorted by the number. I would need this list to update 'on the fly' as new names are added with new numbers.     - multiple pivot tables in a book by using VBA Hi, The data in the different sheets of my workbook have all the same headings. To ease the analysis of the data, I would like to design a code that creates the pivot table for the 'Active Worksheet' respecitively. I evolved a macro for one sample but it is not possible to assign it to the other sheets due to error 1004. As I am not very familiar with VBA I do not know what to change to get the working code for all sheets in the workbook and for all different workbooks accordingly.     - keyboard shortcut Hello According to Office Assistant Online, if you click Ctrl Home, it places the insertion point to the beginning of the worksheet. And if you click Ctrl End, it moves the insertion point to the last used cell on the worksheet. My last row is 256 but Ctrl End takes the cursor to row 449 which is miles away.     - Odd page layout views. I'm not sure how this happened but now when I start Excel 2004 for Mac my default view ("Page Layout" view) is 2 columns wide and 22 rows tall. If I switch to "Normal View", page breaks are displayed at every 2 columns and 22 rows. I cannot get rid of this using "Preferences". I will break down and admit I did download a "Loan Amortization" worksheet off of a third party website (you'd think I'd learned by now). I believe that's when my dilemma started.     - Column width value I am trying to write a library in VB.net that can be used to write Excel spread sheets directly form an application. My library will be writing the sheets as XML files. I need to be bale to give the user of the library a way to control column width and am running into a bit of an odd quandary with regards to the value used. The Excel GUI seems to let you enter the column width as a factor of characters (between 0 and 255) but when that number is stored in the sheet it is not stored as that number but rather it is stored as (according to the xmlss spec) points. My library is allowing the user to enter the column width explicitly so I have to decide how I want them to enter it in (as characters or points). I would like to keep it as characters since this is what most Excel users are already using in the GUI but then I need to convert it to points myself when I store it to the file. This is where I am having a difficult time. I can't seem to come up with any specific conversion formula that makes the numbers work out. Here is a small table showing my issue. The 'char' column is the value that the user enters into the GUI and the 'points' column is how the value is actually stored. These are REAL values taken from some tests I ran in my effort to find the formula used to convert these numbers. char points ----------------- .1 .75 .2 1.5 .3 3.0 .4 3.75 .5 4.5 .6 5.25 .7 6 .8 7.5 .9 8.25 1 9 2 14.25 3 19.5 4 24.75 5 30 6 35.25 7 40.5 8 45.75 9 51 10 56.25 Can anyone here lend a hand as to the real conversion formula used here? My Athlon 1.4Ghz (256RAM) runs a test file in 12 secs using Excel 2000 (17secs with Excel 2003). No graphics are used.     - autofilter and vba Hi, I have a problem with excel2003. UserForm has a textbox which is used to enter a date. Autofilter is used to show data between two different dates. It works(partly) as works the autofilter part of the macro(partly). Partly means that autofilter part works when entering a date to the cell by hand, but not when used through textbox. Somehow the textbox is doing something with the data (in this case a date). After entering the date through textbox You even can't autofilter it by hand.     - Replace Hi. In a very large spreadsheet of exam results I need to change all the A* into S. The reason I have to do this is because countif doesn't work with the *. It counts the all A* as well as the A. But they need to be counted separately. Trouble is, the replace changes everything that starts with A into S. I guess it's coz excel thinks the * is a wildcard just like in the countif formula. So I had to filter a column, find A* and change the top one and pull down the cross to change all the others and do that to all the columns. A bit long winded. Is there a better way? I am using check boxes to perform calculations based on TRUE or FALSE 1. How can I get the cell link in the Format Control to update if copy and paste several rows with several check boxes further down th sheet?     - Excel won't remember sort parameters Hi! Using Excel 2002 SP3 (from Office XP Developer's Edition). When I select several rows, do Data->Sort, select "No header row", select three key columns (all descending), and choose "OK", it sorts just fine. The problem is that I have to do ALL of that EVERY time. In the past, with this same version of Excel, it usually remembered my sort keys, etc, and I could just Data->Sort and hit "OK" and it all worked perfectly. But it occasionally forgets that, and I have no idea how to make it "remember" it again. There doesn't seem to be any setting for "be intelligent".     - Function Reliability??????? I am using a MS Excel workbook presently that is giving me fits over the "Funtions" either not working at all or working incorrectly. I have checked the formating of the cells in use and they are all formatted the same, for "numbers" no decimals. I have re-started my computer, which didn't seem to help. I am presently trying to use the "countif" function in a column, to count the days of the month that have been reached. The "countif" function doesn't count all of the cells that it should. I have just learned that I can go back and delete each cell that is to be counted and then re-enter the number, and the "countif" functions starts working again. I'm trying to count values in one column so that I have an amount of each for a distribution. For example: 8 8 8 11 11 11 12 12 12 I'm using COUNTIF because it's the only one that seems to work, but whenever I drag to fill the series Excel doesn't fill in a linear fashion. When I highlight these and drag, the sequence is repeated, not continued to 11, 12, 13 and so on. FYI, if I don't use the $ sign Excel will change the range from A2 to A3, A4, A5...as I drag.     - Running Average or YTD average Is there a simple formula for calculating a running average? I can do accomplish what I want to do but it takes 4 different steps or functions to get there. Example of what I would like: A-1 thru A-52 equal weeks of the year. We'll say that A-5 represents the 5th week of the year. Income for these weeks will be entered in it's respective cell as it comes due. In the cells that represent the weeks that have not yet come, a "0" is in them.     - Find Column Reference Number Hi, I receive an Excel tab with headers. The header is always the same exept for the order. I mean, let's say I have the header : Name , Unit, Company Those three will always be there but in different order. Then, I'm trying to write a macro that will reference those column.     - Masking? I would like to do some data entry in a spread sheet. First example I have a date cell and it is using the standard of 02/07/06 . I want to make it so that when I start the cell I see the slashes and I don't need to put them in and it goes from the 02 to the 07 without me having to manually putting the slashes in.     - Single quite (') in character data Hi, I have a SQL DTS package exporting data from SQL server to Excel. When the data is exported to excel, each cell other with character data has a single quote and some spaces followed by actual data. I have a moderately large workbook with about 15 worksheets and quite a few
named ranges.

Now I find the grid lines have disappeared from one range nine columns wide
and 48 rows deep. Under Tools-Options "Show grid lines" is checked on all
sheets and I do not recall ever having this unchecked.

How can this happen just from one range, not the sheet ?

Grid lines will vanish from cells which have been assigned a background colour.

Many thanks. I had never - knowingly - selected a background color for the
range but I highlighted it, selected Format/Font. It did not show any color
selected but I clicked No Color/OK and Bingo ! The grid lines reappeared.
