I saved two files to a floppy from Excel 2003. Simply did a Save As command
and nothing else, not even changing the file name.

I took these files to two different machines, one running Excel 2000 and the
other Excel XP. Neither file would open. The error was Saved as Read Only.
I don't even know how to save a file as Read Only.

I brought the floppy back to the machine where the files were saved from.
Now, one file will open and the second gives me the same Read Only error as
I got on the other two machines.

Any hint as to what is going on?

Thanks....

Your first mistake was to save directly to a floppy. After that, you had
little chance of success.

Try to copy the file(s) to Hard Drive before opening.

Floppies are best used only to transport files from one computer to another.

Save the file(s) first to the Hard Drive. Copy to a floppy. Copy from the
floppy to the Hard Drive. Open the file(s) from there.

Hopefully you also saved them to your Hard Drive on your computer before
saving to floppy. The ones on the floppy may be unrecoverable.

Huh?

I copied the two from the floppy to the same PC they were created on. One
opens the other doesn't. Same results as trying to access them directly
from the floppy.

Exactly what I was doing. There are other non-Excel files on the same
floppy that work just fine.

Is this some unique routine for Excel? In many years of copying to floppies
I have never had this problem.

No problem, copies of the files are safely on the harddrive and accessible.

Floppies are notorious for losing data--It's not just excel, but all of office.
In fact, I don't save directly to a floppy using any program.

It's not the copying from/to a floppy that's bad. It's the direct opening in
any of the Office suite of programs that can cause trouble.

Which was it? Saving to or copying to. Makes a big difference.

Thanks for the input. I have never in the past concerned myself with saving
directly to floppies and never heard it was a problem til now. I guess I've
just been lucky.

This thread is really strange. First some with my mother's maiden name
(Dibben) replies and then you reply with the same last name as my father and
I. Of course Peterson is not rare but I have never ran across anyone with
the last name Dibben.

Thanks for the help.

In the instance where I was having the problem with the two files I had
Saved AS to the floppy.

In my second post I was eluding to the fact that I have never in the past
had problems either Saving To or Copying To a floppy.

So, with two guys telling me that there can be problems with "Saving To"
directly from an application to floppy I guess I'll confine my floppy
transports to files that have been "copied" from a previously saved file.

Thanks for the help.....
