    - irritated At least 90% of the occasions I use Edit > Find, I want to search by column and look in values. I therefore 'find' it irritating that my search defaults to rows and look in formulas. Can anyone suggest how to change these defaults? While I'm on the subject of defaults, anyone know how to amend the boot time value of Autosave Period. I would like to default to 30 mins, I have tried changing the Registry key but it keeps resetting itself to 10 minutes.     - Pivot table grouping This has got to be a common problem, but I am not finding the solution. I import sales data via an xml list. I created the pivot table on the series of dates the sales happened. It naturally groups the data with summary columns for the number of sales on each date, just what I would expect. Now I want to that those figures additionally grouped by month, then year. Though tedious, I was able to do this by selected the appropriate groups of dates and using "Group" to group by month, then Group to group by year. First question, that has to be so common it seems like there must be an easier way. Next, a month goes by and I refresh the sales data (using Xml/Refresh Data). I save. Now I go to my pivot table and refresh data. As I would expect there are new dates in the series that are not part of any existing group. Typically there are additional dates that should have fallen in already grouped months but the data wasn't present at the time of the last run. Getting these dates into the appropriate group is a nightmare of ungrouping, dragging, guessing why a row won't move where I want and then finally grouping again. Second question, isn't there a way to update the underlying list so that data will get into the pivot table in the correct grouping? I'd really appreciate some help here, thanks!     - Data validation through code Hi Experts, You know that DATA VALIDATION works only in case of entering values in cells by typing (prvents entering wrong values). It does not work in case of pasting. It also does not work in case of cells having formula. I read in some books that we can use worksheet_Change event or worksheet_Calculate to validate data through code. But code can validate data only after cell is changed. It means we can not prevent wrong entries, we also can not restore original values. Please tell me, is my conception right? or is there any way to handle this problem.     - Look up Data from Worksheet within same Workbook Hi All, Sorry, this may seem like an elementary question but.... First of all I have three seperate worksheets containing data within my workbook. I want to return all rows from each of those worksheets that matches a certain criteria to another worksheet, without having to manipulate the data. e.g. I have charge codes beginning in 1-90XX, 1-91xx, etc... These appear multiple times in the worksheets that contain data I want to search sheets 1 - 3 to see if any rows contain them & if they do, I want all these complete rows to appear in another worksheet within that same workbook. VLOOKUP function will not work for me as the charge code is in column O & I can only get it to return data within that row for column O onward. Also, I am unsure if you can get VLOOKUP to check for multiple conditions * What function should I be using? * Can you use VLOOKUP in a nested statement to search for the various conditions(charge codes)? * Can VLOOKUP return a whole row, without having to specify the column? * Can VLOOKUP return data previous to the column where the criteria of the search is met? * Finally: Should I try to use Macros & if so, can someone point me in the right direction???     - Question about numbers lined up against dates Hey all, Lets see if I can explain this one..... In Column "A" I have a series pf part number- IE 123, 442, ER45 and a whole load of others. In Column "B" I have a price against each part number IE £45.00, £6.70 and others In column "C" I have delivery dates against each part. IE - 2/3/06, 3/6/08 and lots of others. Part number 123 may be required 2/3/06 and 28/3/06 and also 6/6/08 and is £45 each What I am looking for is a formula that shows part number 123 totals monthly amounts.     - embedded object error (pdf file) I have two new computers. Dell latitude laptop and dimension desktop. I am converting an excel file to pdf format and trying to insert it as an object in an excel file so people can double click on it and view it. I used to do this with my old laptop (purchased new in 2004 Dell Latitude) It worked fine with that laptop. I am taking an excel file and converting it to pdf format using a program I purchased called personal converter. Then opening the other file and clicking insert, object, create from file (and display as icon). I get the following error on the laptop "cannot insert object". When I try to do it on the new desktop, it locks excel up but doesn't give an error message. I have tried with both machines, please help.     - Pivot Table counting two columns I need help setting up a pivot table that counts from two columns. I have an Access database that tracks the work orders performed by my mechanics. Currently, I import this into excel. What I want to count is how many work orders in a day a mechanic works on. There can be up to 2 mechanics that perform a work order so I have two columns names Mechanic #1 and Mechanic #2. When I set up my pivot table with the Mechanic #1 and 2 as column fields, the date as the row field, and the count of the word order # as the data field, the pivot table returns the count of the combinations of occurences of the names in the mechanic columns vice the number of occurences that that particular name appears in those columns. Hi Guys, I dont know where to start with this one! basically on a figures sheet I am displaying a table with lines showing the highest amounts on another sheet based on their category. (=MAX(data!AZ2:AZ65534)) now on this other sheet it has a line for each 'entry', on one of the cells for each 'entry' are the numbers that I'm maxing to give a highest figure. Now what I would love to be able to do, is hyperlink that formula that is showing the highest entry, so that when you click on it it takes to the other sheet and shows you its answer (the entry with the highest amount) have i made any sense at all? is this possible?     - XML question Hi, I don't know much about XML but I thought it was a cross platform data file. I opened a CSV file in XL and saved it as XML. Not only did it save the file structure, plus the data, but also saved a lot of XL specific stuff. Now, I want to open the XML file with another programme (Filemaker) but I get an XML parsing error when it gets to the "ProtectScenarions" tag.     - Help with VBA code please Greetings, I am stumped so I am hoping the experts can help. I have spent many hours trying to write code to accomplish a certain task and no matter how I tweak it I keep running into problems. I will attempt to explain my goal: I have a worksheet that contains two columns of numbers (with no empty cells in the columns) that need to be compared. It will not always be the same two columns, so I need to be able to input which two before the program runs. The number of rows will also vary. For the sake of simplicity let's call these columns dataOld and dataNew. First I need to search through dataOld and if a number is found that is *not* contained in dataNew, the cell containing the dataOld number as well as the two cells to the right need to be moved into columns "I" "J" & "K" (starting at row # 1). And each time cells are added to IJK, they need to be placed in the row under the previously-added cells. Now I need to take the remaining cells in dataOld and move each cell (and the two cells to the right) into the same row that contains the matching number in dataNew, keeping to the same columns. (In some rows this criteria will already be met, with the matching dataOld and dataNew cells already in the same row). This should then leave three blank cells (the cell in dataOld and the two cells to the right) in the same row as dataNew if there was not a match in dataOld. Columns IJK now need to be adjusted to the width of the data they contain. Error handling should be added for two scenarios: Either the user inputs an incorrect column (in which case there would be no matches between dataOld and dataNew), or the user inputs an invalid column (such as inputting a number). There is one additional problem that I need to mention: Columns dataOld and dataNew always have errors in some of the cells (causing the little green triangle to appear in the upper left of the cell). My fix for this has been to copy from an empty cell, then do a "Paste Special" with and "Add Operation" to the entire sheet. This works, but takes some time to run, and I would like to know of any more efficient ways to handle this. I hope I have done a sufficient job of explaining what I need.     - Subtotals I have 3 columns: Month Product Hours I want to be able to group months in their respective groups and then find the subtotal for the hours within each month group. And a Grand Total in the end. I am only able to do this once with the DATA / Subtotals sequence. That is to say for instance, I have column A holds 26 different kinds of material and column b holds 200 different kinds of processing. Whenever she tries to reset the custom colors from Tools-> Option-> Color -> Reset, nothing happens but if I do the same on my machine, it resets without a problem. it doesn't matter which files she tries, it just happens on her pc and never on mine.     - reference question I have a cell 'A1' that references a cell in another (unsorted) column 'B'. Every day I add a new column of info to the worksheet by inserting a column. Column B then becomes Column C. As a result of the insertion, cell A1 now references a cell in column C- the previous day- but I want it to stay referenced to the (new) column B. I am trying to make a simple menu for our cafeteria to put on our school web page. Everything looks great, but when I add some images (not all of them do this) it distorts the gridlines.     - Creating a Random Lottery I have been tossing around the idea of how to use Excel to simulate a lottery drum for picking prizes. I have to pick out random drawings monthy for prizes and have been placing tickets with names into a fish bowl. I have to say this is very anoying and time consuming. The basics would be to have a list of names, and how many tickets or entries each name has in the draw. Of course a person with one ticket should stillbe able to win, but those with more tickets just get a better chance.     - Macro Help I have daily excel files for 4 years worth of data that I need to consolidate into 1 workbook. Each workbook contains 5 days worth of data so I only have to open every 5th file. The data is in the same range in each files (F16:J37) with dates across the top so I need to copy the data and transpose it to the consolidated workbook. For instance: A C E A 1 2 B 3 5 C 6 9 D 10 15 I would like to use VLOOKUP (or whatever is appropriate) to find the appropriate letter code (from Stat2 col A) which represents the numeric range (Stat2 cols C & E) for the number in Stat1 col C. The result will be placed in Stat1 col D. Example: If a row in Stat1 col C = 4, then "B" will be the result displayed in col D as 4>3 and <5 and therefore falls into range "B" identified on Stat2.     - VB Excel Range I need to compare the values in a cell in one workbook to the same cell in another workbook and store them in the same cell in a new workbook. I wrote the code already to open each workbook, add a new workbook, and format my heading information on the sheets. However, I am struggling with finding an efficient way to make the value of A1 in my new workbook=A1 in workbook1 - A1 in workbook2. With the Range command, is there any way to have the cell know its own address? Or do I have to increment cell by cell, store the address and then insert that information into the formula to perform the subtraction? Any help would be appreciated.     - Excel Printing Hi, I have written a small VBA macro in excel (2002) which print outs a excel sheet as a pdf file. It used to work well until an update of acrobat was installed. I guess the problem is that the non working macro tries to print out a page with other fonts or something. Any idea of how I can get this to work? Is there any easier way to print a pdf (via vba, and where I can specify a filename)? But when I go back to try and update the data, I am getting the #NAME? error in the result cell. I have just tried to update an existing time by just 1 hour and it loses the result.     - Runaway Spreadsheet? Hi, One of our users has a strange problem in Excel. It seems that when he opens the program, and highlights a cell, the curser remains 'pressed down', so when he moves the mouse, the curser selection just highlights more cells, and he can't 'unclick' or stop the selection, it's as if he's selected a cell and kept his finger on the mouse, or held down shift (which I initially thought he had), and can only highlight more cells. When this happens he can't close excel, select anything from the toolbar, and the only way of getting out of it, is to alt+tab to another program, and then ctrl+alt+delete and end excel. I've seen similar issues in the past with sticky shift or windows keys, and windows explorer pops up every time someone hits the 'E' key, but that's not happening in this case, I'd expect highlighting in word to have the same issue if it was a sticky key, but there are no other problems with any other programs.
