    - VLOOKUPS and Template Hi All Ok, I have a tricky rpoblem. What I have is a worksheet full of sales information, for example, col a has the directors name, col b has the managers name, col c has the store name, col d has the sales value for store, col e for manager and col f for director. There are 5 diferent directors who look after 20 different managers, who in turn look after 50 stores. So col a has repeating director name until the data for next director starts (about 20 rows), col b has the manager's name repeating (about 15 times) and col c has a row for each store, this tells me which store is in which manager group and which director group. What I would like to be able to do is set up a worksheet for each manager and have the manager's total on top, his stores and stores sales beneath and the director for the area total at the bottom. The main sheet with all the data is a weekly download where the stores may change the manager area they're in or even the director area. I know this sounds confusing but I'd like to be able to produce this report each week where the store names in each manager's worksheet update according to whatever store he has that week and his director's sales info displayed at the bottom. If anyone has the vaguest idea what I'm talking about, that's a brilliant start, if you can help me with this, I would be forever greatful.     - INDEX and 2 MATCHES (of which 1 variable) Hello, I'm stucked with the following: I try to retrieve a result (column C)via a combination of a INDEX and two MATCH functions, the first MATCH needs to be matched exactly but the second MATCH has to be defined as the closest match.     - How to write an EMPTY cell? As part of a formula (or as part of Copy->PasteSpecial, I need to overwrite a column of cells with either data or leave empty. Example, =(if a<>b,c,"") - where c is a number - doesn't work because it puts a blank in the cell. Example, =(if a<>b,c,0) - where c is a number - doesn't work because it puts a zero in the cell. I don't want to use Tools->Options to show the cells as empty rather than 0.00 because that will be so for the whole sheet, not just the one column I am worrying about. I am trying to update a protected sheet automatically from a second sheet and only the 2 columns I am supposed to enter data into are unprotected (can be changed). I have the whole thing working now with a macro except for the cells which are supposed to remain empty. If I use "" then it messes up a subsequent formula, and if I use 0 then it looks wrong (I want to place the value in each cell of the column only if it meets a certain condition, else leave it empty.     - shifting values I have 100+ rows each with 6 cells (A-F) A & B contain variables which may or may not change daily and C-F have values produced as follows: C=A*B, D equals what was previously in C, E=what was in D, F=what was in E, what was previously in F doesn't matter.     - Detect Colours Hi A Colleague has just asked me if there is any way, without using VB to detect font colours by using an IF statement formula. ie. He has created a sheet that if a user changes a cell then the cell that is changed turns red. He would like to detect this change by using a formula.     - Problems with programs, help files, excel, on partitioned hard drive Good Morning, Not sure where to post or where to start with this one. I have a hard drive with several partitions. Windows 2000 and IE are on the C: partition and everything else is in it's own partition. So Office 2000 is installed in the "Program Files" Partition and "My Documents" and other data folders have their own partitions. I used TweakUI to make sure everyone knows where they are. Everything works fine except for help files and maybe some stuff in Excel's VBA editor (such as certain scripts not being able to run properly). The help files I'm sure about though. The Windows help files don't even show up. I can select a topic from the index but then I get nothing; maybe an IE error page. Thankfully, I'm able to read most of the Excel help files but none of the links show up. I get empty placeholders instead. This is a relatively new install and I'm not sure what is causing the problem but my main suspect is the partitioning of the hard drive.     - Autofilter not appearing correctly? help! Hey all. I copied a large spreadsheet into a new worksbook and hence new sheet. This sheet was then customised for the user ..I got rid of un-necessary rows within the this new customised spreadsheet that user would not require. The autofilter in the original large spreadsheet shows many different options when the drop down button is clicked... whilst the sheet that ive created which was mostly copied does show the autofilter but shows no additional options..it only shows the options: "All", "Top 10" and "Custom".     - Large excel file problems? I have a very large Excel file, about 6mb. The main cuase of that siz is about 20 columns by 8192 rows of data and formulas analyzing tha data (yes..I am afraid that is as compact as I can get it). The othe causes for the size are a lot of formatting, color, text, etc, but I a sure most of it is all the formulas. With the file size being 6mb, i there anything to worry about as far as expecting Excel crashes, o anything of that sort? I am using Excel 97, by the way.     - Cant click button immeditally After typing into a cell, I cannot click on a button right away. First I have to hit enter(or do something to move to another cell), then I ca click on the button. Is there any way around this? Reason being tha this spreadsheet was designed for use by some no so computer savv people, and when they cant click the button, I dont know what the think will fix it, but somehow they delete something and goof up th spreadsheet. Is there a way to change this so clicking the butto deactivates the cell, or something like that?     - conditional named dynamic ranges I've use the offset function with great success to define named dynamic ranges, but I'm now trying to only include certain rows in the range. The formula I use currently looks like this: =OFFSET('NARD Listing'!$A$1,0,0,COUNTA('NARD Listing'!$A:$A),8) but I am unable to figure out how to only include rows that have '2005' as a value in column D, as an example, in the named range. thanks for any help!     - Help with slow loading and recalculation of work books. I have created workbooks to analysis data for my fishing. There are 12 workbooks (each containing 48 sheets), one workbook per year for the last 12 years, each approx. 12,600KB. Each years workbook is linked to the following years workbook by some 1000+ cells. The data is fed into these workbooks from 2 associated workbooks, one of approx. 10,700KB and another of approx. 2,150KB. All the workbooks contain numerous volatile calculations using TODAY() and many of the sheets within the 12 yearly workbooks contain INDEX/MATCH lists of data either from within the workbook of from the 2 associated workbooks. I an running windows 98 second edition and Excel 97 on a computer with a Pentium II processor. The hard drive is 6137MB(FAT32) of which just over half is available space. I have 192MB RAM. I have looked through http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/slowresp.htm and have done what I can to solve slow response of loading and calculation. To load each of the yearly workbooks together with recalculating links takes between 1-2 minutes and I can only load 2 workbooks (attempting to load a 3rd results in an out of memory message). It would be an advantage if I could load up to 3 workbooks at a time but, this is not essential. However I would like to be able to speed up the loading and calculation. Would an increase in memory help with this and if so, how much improvement in loading and calculation time could I expect to achieve?     - Three choice user input from form Hi, have posted similar question before but need to clarify it. I need a user form (got this far) that gives the user three choices. One is a unique product number (200) coloumn A, the second is a location (9 altogether) sorted in column B and the third a date (in the top row). I need to capture this preset data from the user form and then add a fourth entry (a number) into the cell chosen from the first three choices.     - Way to Link Tab Names I checked this out a few years ago, but thought I might post for an updated answer. I have a few workbooks linked together and would like to know if there is a way to create an absolute reference between linked tabs regardless of the name of the tab. As new projects are started, tabs get renamed, so we have to have all the workbooks open at once to keep the links active. Maybe there is a way to name the tab to a linked cell, so as a workbook is opened, it looks at the linked cell name for the tab name first to keep the links active? It would also have to work around tabs getting relocated, so references to Sheet1, Sheet2, would probably not work, which is why I thought a cell reference would work around that issue. Thanks!     - Extract Unique Values, Then Extract Again to Remove Suffixes I have a list of builders where I want to extract all the unique values. Using =IF(COUNTIF($A$1:A1,A1)=1,A!,"") works fine to get the first set of unique values, but I need to extract it a bit further. The builder names may be Ryan 50, Ryan 60 or just Ryan. I need to combine those values to come up with the final list of unique builders that just says Ryan. I'm not sure if I can strip off anything from the end as some are Ryan - Greenbrier.     - Formula Indictor??? Excel 2003 I have several cells that contain IF formulas in them. If it makes any difference they are formatted to show nothing if a referenced cell is blank i.e. (=IF(A7="","","Widget"). Regarding the appearance of these cells, they have a small indicator in the upper left (similar to the indictor to shows that a cell contains a note). I do not want this visible (whatever it is).     - Validation rule but only sometimes Hi! Thanks to help here, I now know how to set a cell to allow the user to select items from a list elsewhere in a spreadsheet. Data->Validation->List works great! But now I'd like to expand that. I want to make that cell be a dropdown list SOMETIMES, but other times force a specific value (or nothing) into it, all based on the value of another cell. If I put in a validation rule, there's no provision for doing an "if(x,y,z)" where either y or z makes a dropdown list while the other one does not. How can I do this?     - Backups default How can I configure Excel so that when it opens to a new file (Book 1.xls) that the new file I create from there, and save, is defaulted to 'Always Create Backups' and that a backup is automatically created of this new file and of course subsequently created as I edit and save this file. Dear friends,
Everytime I type the Date of 10 Dec. 2005 as 10/12/2005, it converted to
12/10/2005 and it refused to be modified when I try to adjust it from
FormatCells.

Look in the Control Panel>Regional Settings and make sure that you don't
have English (United States) selected.
