    - vlookup formula Is it possible to use a cell refence, in which the referred to cell lists the workbook and array, as the range for a lookup formula. I am attempting to use the same VLOOKUP formula to access a variety of files which are employee timesheets.     - Changing a cells format I had some one type in some data for me and when I got it the cell box has a Little green triangle in the top left hand corner- I assume that this means it is a text format. If double click on each cell it changes the format so I can do Sum etc. But we are talking a lot of Data- Is there a way I can select the column and change the format?     - outlook express / excel saving problem Hi When an excel file is opened as an attachment in outlook express and the changes made and saved, are the changes saved anywhere or lost when the email is closed?     - Excel 2003 doesn't save files in network disk drive WinXP Pro SP2 + Office2003 OEM All the applications open, edit and save in the netwoth HDD but Excel2003 doesn't save. It opens an existing file, we try to save it and it shows a error message related with sharing permissions. It creates a temp file but even that returns error. All other applications work perfectly. Even with a new worksheet it does the same. Does not allow to save in the network drive. The same users in other computers have no problem. It's a brand new machine, new software. Error ID 10036.     - File is saved on opening Hi all, I have an Excelfile that, when I open it, immediately saves itself. have no idea why it does that and since it is a file of nearly 50 Mb, really hate to spend a lot of time to watch Excel save that 50 Mb' every time I open the file. I created the file, but after that it' been used by others. The AutoSave is not installed. This original 50Mb file contains severa macros, none of them have any AutoOpen statements, but just to be sure I copied the file and stripped it completely. I now have a file that contains no macro's and just 1 empty sheet. Th size is now 17 kb, but it still saves on opening (a lot faster than th 50 Mb :) ). I can't think of any reason why Excel would do that. An it's just those two files (the original and the copy), because when open another file, nothing happens. Has anyone a clue as to what is happening here? Is there any optio that's checked and should be unchecked?     - Excel Time Problem I exported a file from a telephone switch reporting system as a "tab separated text" file, because when I export the data in Excel I have to deal with merged cells and other formatting problems. I have a couple of columns that have time values like 160:02:05 for logged in time, and 34:16:46 as the waiting dime? Both are time ?DURATIONS? or time in a state. I used the Format, Cell, custom and [ss] to get the duration value to seconds, and I get 123406 and 576125 respectively. I then use these numbers in a calculation typically like 1338 / (576125 - 123406) and I get 219 as the answer. The problem occurs if I do the same calculation on a calculator. The same formula 1338 / (576125 - 123406) gives 9.14 as the answer... I know that the 9.14 is in the right range for my answer. How do I get excel to give me the right number. Note: all of the other Duration values that I am using in my calculations match the calculator answer.     - Chart setting First excuse me for my bad english :-) I realized a chart with a set of numbers on the X-axix. The problem is that the interval between each number is not constant, while the chart represents each of them at the same distance, as they were text labels. How to solve?     - automatic text highlighting Hi folks, I use a spreadsheet that automatically changes the font color of the row to red if the text in a particular cell = fail. My problem is it's not working consistently (because of my editing the spreadsheet I expect) and I CANNOT find out how it's done.     - summing values in certain months I have used the count number of dates appears in certain months: =sum((month(a2:a11)=b2)*(year(a2:a11)=c2)*1) quite successfuly. Now I need to add the values in another column fo that month. So in other words, search column a2 to a11 with the dat specified and if there is a value in column d then add all the value together and give me a total money received for that month.     - Formulas sometimes will not work in a Column or cell? I am perplexed a bit with an annoying problem that is user error I am sure: Most of the time, I can go to a cell and type in =F8+G8 and I get wonderful number that comes out. But other times the output will be "=F8+G8" and the whole column is that way? I think that this is because the column is text format.. so I select the column and format for Numeric- but nothing happens I still get "=F8+G8"- What can I do to format that column so I can do some formulas?     - Inventory control problem I'm a first timer using xls for inventory control but ran into problem. I have 2 columns Pulled and Returns. When you first inpu numbers in it calculates the Inventory on Hand correctly. The proble is that the inputs are done daily and when delete the old numbers i the 2 columns and input the new ones...it disregards the previous day numbers.     - An instant sorting problem Dear all, I have a list of data in 2 columns: Column A stores 1000 names of students and Column B stores the scores of the corresponding students. If I want to make a sorted list of data in Columns C and D with descending scores, what formulas should I use in columns C and D? It should be noted that some students may get the same score.     - GradeBook Spanks. That worked for the numbers. Now my problem is the Final Grade Average. It's counting the empt cells as 0 and putting it into the average. Here is my formula for that: =AVERAGE(C5+D5+H5,K5+L5+P5,S5+T5+X5,AA5+AB5+AF5,AI5+AJ5+AN5,AQ5+AR5+AV5,AY5+AZ5+BD5,BG5+BH5+BL5,BO5+BP5+BT5) So say I only have data inputted for C5, D5, and H5, but the rest ar blank, then the above formula computes the empty cells as zero.     - Delete does NOT delete Excel 97, SR2 Using large spreadsheets. Doing lots of cut & paste and deletes Finished spreadsheet gets exported/merged with our main operation data-base ( not d-base or anything like that ) Have found that a delete ( and cut & paste?) actually leaves everything in the file (althought hidden to the eye). Afer some manipulation of the file, the file becomes hugh! This messes up our export/merge, big time. Our internal "fix" has been to convert to CSV (comma seperated values), and reformat to get the required appearance back. 1: Is there a way to properly clean up the file so that what is on the screen, etc., is actually what is in the file? 2: Do the newer versions of Excel ( 2003? ) have a built in fix? Here is my format and the formulas I have used and m questions: I give 2 grades a week which I average all out at the end of a schoo quarter (9 weeks). Each week is divided into grade factors: 1 Column for Lesson (Points given based on 0-4 scale) 1 Column for Test (Points given based on 0-4 scale) 1 Column for Effort (Points given based on 0-4 scale) 1 Column for Conduct (Points given based on 0-4 scale) 1 Column for Days Missed in the Week 1 Column for Points Given Based on Missed Days (Points given based o 0-4 scale) 1 Column for Letter Grade based on addition of Lesson, Test, and Day Missed Pts 1 Column for Letter Grade based on addition of Effort, Conduct, an Days Missed Pts LAST 2 COLUMNS BASED ON THIS FORMULA =IF(C4+D4+H4>=11,"A",IF(C4+D4+H4>=9,"B",IF(C4+D4+H4>=7,"C",IF(C4+D4+H4>=5,"D",IF(C4+D4+H4<=4.99,"F"))))) This is repeated for every week (9 weeks).     - Editing of comments - Excel will not allow. I have a spreadsheet which does not allow me to edit comments created b other users, by right clicking on the cell. Other users can only edi their own comments. There is no protection on the worksheet o workbook. The only way edit will be allowed, is to Show the comment, then it ca be edited.     - Help with easy LOOKUP formula please Could someone please tell me how to lookup a date in one row that matches a minimum number in another row? Specifically - Row 1 contains dates. Row 2 contains the DOW averages for those dates. At the end of Row 2 (say column Z) my formula finds the smallest (MIN) number in the row. In Row 1, Column Z, I would like to put the LOOKUP function that finds the corresponding date of the value found in Row 2, Column Z. In other words, I need to lookup the date in Row 1 that corresponds to the lowest DOW average found in Row 2. I'm sure this is a piece of cake for those in the know, but I sure can't figure it out.
