    - VLOOKUP Question I use VLOOKUP all the time but I now have a workbook with multiple worksheets. Each worksheet has different product groups. Each product has a unique product code (catalog #).     - Excel 2007 - Nothing shows up in the cell while I'm typing! I'm running into an issue with a range of cells in a spreadsheet where nothing shows up in the cell as I type. I can see the cursor moving to the right to show that I'm typing something, but the value that I'm typing doesn't actually appear in the cell until I hit <Enter>. I'm maintaining a large workbook with lots of formulas and named ranges. It was built by someone who no longer works here, so I'd rather not blow it away and start over. It appears it was built using Excel 2003. I'm now managing the file in Excel 2007. I've been adding records to this spreadsheet for several days now and didn't have this issue. But now all of a sudden, I get to a certain row (in this case, Row 1776) and nothing I type shows up until I hit enter. If I clear the contents of any row above row 1776, I can clearly see everything as I type it. But with Row 1776 and beyone, I can't see what I type. I am able to see what I'm typing in the formula bar at the top of the page, but not in the cell itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated!     - lost in 2007 Hi, I have just upgraded from Excel 2003 to 2007. I was disappointed to realize that: -my toolbar customizations were lost: Of course, toolbars are obsolete in 2007, but I hoped that I could at least recover my custom buttons in the Quick Access toolbar...Any comments? -I have created lots of useful vba functions that I had regrouped in an xla file placed in my XLstart folder so that they would be always available. I have no idea how to achieve the same functionality in 2007. -I also had a few custom functions in my personal.xls (in the XLStart folder). I assume that it doesn't work any more in 2007 since none of my custom functions are available. Gee, and I'm supposed to migrate 3000 users this fall!!!     - Excel.exe is not a valid Win32 Application. My system: Vista Business 32bit with SP1, Office 2007 Professional with SP1. For a while I was running Vista (without SP1) and using Office 2007 with SP1. Rarely any issues. Sometime after installing Vista SP1, I've been having odd issues with my Office installation, Excel especially. I don't know if it's its SP1 related, or if it's just something went wrong with the Office install. Here's the issue. I leave my PC on 24/7 and simply lock it when I leave the office. After several days, Excel will just stop working, completely. When I try to launch excel I get the error "Excel.exe is not a valid Win32 application". I have tried reapplying SP1. After reapplying the SP1 and rebooting, everything returned to normal. So I thought. A week or so later, same issue. It turns out simply rebooting resolves the issue temporarily. I thought my Excel exe was corrupted (i.e. some file wrote/deleted information from the binary file). I verified modified dates with other excel exe's and everything is the same. Nothing seems out of the ordinary. I can't find any relevant errors in my event log. I can't see anything out of the ordinary when using SysInternal's process monitor either. It's like something in Vista thinks this EXE is a bad EXE and it won't let it launch until I reboot. I have even noticed after several times of launching the exe, if I browsed to the installation directory, the actual icon for Excel was dimmed, as if it was like a hidden file or something. WTH? When I rebooted, it returned to the normal icon. I have yet to see the icon dim again, even during times of issue. I disabled my antivirus thinking it was the culprit to no avail. What in the world could be happening? When I use the process monitor, the exe never even gets executed (i.e. no events for excel.exe).     - Advanced filter for groups to in Excel Hello - I have a server inventory list that I'm trying to organize for end users based on what group the servers belong in. Some servers belong exclusively in our "Staging 1" environment, some servers belong exclusively in our "Staging 2" environment, and some are shared between the two. I have a column that is named, "Environment" and right now I have assigned the exclusive servers to their appropriate groups however the ones that are shared need to be categorized by something like, "Staging 1 and 2." The problem I'm facing is that I want someone using the spreadsheet to be able to filter based on no more than the two environments - Staging 1 or Staging 2. If someone filters to view either one of those groups then he or she should see the servers in the "Staging 1 and 2" group as well because they're shared across both. Does anyone have a solution? I have a start time, and an end time. Then I subtract one from the other and get hh:mm, such as 1:08 which represents 1 hour and 8 minutes. So far so good. But then I want a formula that converts that to 1.2 hours. But everything I try is failing. I can't even figure out how to convert the 1:08 to 68 minutes.     - save as pdf crashes Hi, I am having difficulty with the Excel 2007 'save as pdf' functionality. In both cases, the pdf file is not created. I am able to save other Excel documents as pdf files, but, for some reason, this one refuses to be converted to a pdf file.     - Excel ignoring date format when saving to Text Hi, I have a spreadsheet that look fine on the screen, perfectly formatted date wise. It's a 2003 SP2 spreadsheet. When I save it to text (Tab delimited) or any other text format it reverts to mm/dd/yyyy formating instead of british dd/mm/yyyy. I've checked all the regional settings on the machine and nothing appears to be wrong with it. Prior to an upgrade to 2003 it was working fine. Sometimes it works fine; for example: A B C D Date Mar-08 Feb-08 Jan-08 If I wish to return the column number from the dates: Mar-08 =MATCH(A2,$A$1:$D$1) returns the value 2 Feb-08 =MATCH(A3,$A$1:$D$1) returns the value 3 Jan-08 =MATCH(A4,$A$1:$D$1) returns the value 4 However if I expand the reference to include column E, Dec-07 I get this result: Mar-08 =MATCH(A2,$A$1:$E$1) returns the value 5 (which is the total number of cells in the reference). Can anyone explain why this would be the case? (The dates are actually 01/03/2008 (UK style) but I have used custom format to display them as mmm-yy. Also the dates are always the first of the month.) Then next part of my question is a little more complex. In column A I have a product names In column B I have the first date that this product was sold. In Column D to A I have the product sales by month. I would like to use the AVERAGE formula in in column C to calculate the average sales over time. However not all products have the same history; some are more recent than others; products have the value zero in the months before they appeared. Therefore if a product has been around since the start the formula will be =AVERAGE(D2:Z2) But if the product has only been around for the past three months the formula will be =AVERAGE(D2:F2) I would like to use the MATCH formula (or a similar formula) to replace the second cell reference in my AVERAGE formula. That is, a nested formula that references the values in column B (the date the product was first sold) and returns the appropriate column reference. I hope I have been clear.     - Cannot open shared Excel file because it is locked by own id A fellow user maintains an Excel file on a Windows Server 2000 box that is shared across a network. This user accesses the Excel file from his desktop which is running Windows XP SP2. Frequently, he cannot open his shared Excel file because it is locked by his own id. This problem persists for hours but at the longest is cleared up on its own by the next day. He does not have the Excel file open and there is no instance of process EXCEL.EXE executing on his desktop PC. I have tried asking him to: 1. Close Windows Explorer because it can read data about the file and hence leave it open. 2. Reboot his PC 3. Login to my PC using his User Id All to no avail. I have little control over the Window Server 2000 box hosting the shared Excel file in question. Is there anyway to further isolate the problem? For instance, are there known problems with Windows Server 2000 opportunistic locking support? If so, what fix level was it corrected in?     - Forcing a cell to be formatted as text - when using the Match Index Hello - I am trying to do use the Match and Index functions to perform a Vlookup. However, the column for which I am attempting to match values will not convert to text format (thus disallowing me from doing the Lookup). Does anyone have any suggestions. FYI, the way that I know that it isn't text is when I use the =istext() function, i get "false".     - Excel 2003 - VBA - SUMIF Here is a tough one: I have a table with rows of information including an ID Code. The ID code is made up of four characters, each meaning something distinct. I want to create a flexible reporting system where the user can specify which of these rows to include in the report. Up to here there have been no problems, example; Code IMDA specifies an account that is active, indicated by the "A". Most accounts are Active but there is also the possibility for it to be Inactive, in which case the Code would have been IMDI, for Inactive. To gather the Net Worth of these accounts, I simply look for the distinct code. SUMIF(A5:A1500,"IMDA",CW5:CW1500) SUMIF(A5:A1500,"IMDI",CW5:CW1500) Challenge: I would like to have the ability to use wildcards (+) in the Code to indicate that any character in that position should be considered a match. The above code would produce a report that has two cells showing all Active IMD accounts (IMDA), and all Inactive (IMDI). I would like to offer the user the ability to insert the wildcard by changing the code to be able to handle a Pseudo Code of IMD+ where the last character is inconsequential to a match. Is there not an applicable formula to neutralize the exemplary loose string such that the subsequent normalization of the string would be an orderly assembly as shown above ? 6.     - Filter question Hi, I have a Pivot Table in Excel 2007 with data. I have a Date column. I need to filter the data so it shows me the data from 01-01-2008 and today date minus 1 day. I would like to have the data filtered automatically (without having to go everyday manually and change the filter date). I can see some auto filters to filter for yesterday, today, the last month, year to date, etc. I tried the Between option but it only lets me define dates, it doesn't let me define references to other cells or formulas (like =today()-1 for example)...     - Pivot Table Formatting I have read past posts on Pivot Table formatting and have achieved some success with the formatting problem. My current problem is that on one spreadsheet I have used AutoFormat to get the look I want for the Pivot Table. On this table I expanded the width of the columns and the formatting has held in place. I then created a new and separate spreadsheet file using the former one as a template. Everything looks great, except on this file, every time I refresh, the columns go back to the default width. I have tried enabling selection before widening the columns with no luck.     - General Novice Questions (Protection, Format) I have created a spreadsheet and have restricted a row and footing row (totals) from being changed by using the "format cells / protection" feature. I have left all the data entry rows unprotected so that the entry people can make changes. These entry rows have columns with specfics formats like Date, Currency, etc and I make it all look nice with the grid feature. Finally, I set "Tools /Protection/ Protect sheet" to active the protected cells. The problem is how can the user Insert new rows? To get around this, I created enough rows so that the user has the space they need (50 rows) to accomodate the necessary entries. The new problem is that if the user forgets to make any entry they have to Insert which they cannot do because of the protection. So, to get around this they can drag the lower existing data rows down, but then the opening they create loses the format that I set for that column and the nice grid I put in disappears in those rows? The ignore blank check box in data validation looks tempting, but I still get all the blank cells at the bottom of my drop down list.     - Changing a formula's result to text I have a pretty simple worksheet that lists the date in column A. In column B, I have a formula that converts the date in Column A to the proper day of week. When I put it in a pivot table, it treats column B as an individual date, not the proper DOW.     - updating DATEDIFF arguments in formula Hi. I have a column of dates, and at the bottom, I want to calculate the number of days between the first and last dates. I' using the formula =(DATEDIF(B6,B15,"d")) The problem is that as I add dates, I have to edit the formula to change B15 to the reference of the new row (e.g., B16, B17, etc.). worksheet range or an OLE DB connection as the source data. Is it
possible to set a 2D array as the source data?

FWIW you could "write-down" the array (to cells) and then "load-up" (from range) -?-
