    - formula to turn hh:mm cell into x.y hours I need to track billing for a client, with 1/10th hour precision, and where partial groups of 6 minutes round up to the next 1/10th hour (example: 8 minutes = 0.2 hours). I have a start time, and an end time. Then I subtract one from the other and get hh:mm, such as 1:08 which represents 1 hour and 8 minutes. So far so good. But then I want a formula that converts that to 1.2 hours. But everything I try is failing. I can't even figure out how to convert the 1:08 to 68 minutes.     - save as pdf crashes Hi, I am having difficulty with the Excel 2007 'save as pdf' functionality. I have posted the troublesome file at the link below: http://dollar.biz.uiowa.edu/~jgoodson/TestRecourse.zip When attempting to save the 'chart1' worksheet as a pdf file, Excel stops working and either closes or restarts. In both cases, the pdf file is not created. I am able to save other Excel documents as pdf files, but, for some reason, this one refuses to be converted to a pdf file. I have reinstalled the 'save as pdf' add-in from Microsoft, but this doesn't help. I appreciate any advice.     - Excel ignoring date format when saving to Text Hi, I have a spreadsheet that look fine on the screen, perfectly formatted date wise. It's a 2003 SP2 spreadsheet. When I save it to text (Tab delimited) or any other text format it reverts to mm/dd/yyyy formating instead of british dd/mm/yyyy. I've checked all the regional settings on the machine and nothing appears to be wrong with it. Prior to an upgrade to 2003 it was working fine.     - Problems referencing dates with the MATCH formula I am finding this a little unpredictable. Sometimes it works fine; for example: A B C D Date Mar-08 Feb-08 Jan-08 If I wish to return the column number from the dates: Mar-08 =MATCH(A2,$A$1:$D$1) returns the value 2 Feb-08 =MATCH(A3,$A$1:$D$1) returns the value 3 Jan-08 =MATCH(A4,$A$1:$D$1) returns the value 4 However if I expand the reference to include column E, Dec-07 I get this result: Mar-08 =MATCH(A2,$A$1:$E$1) returns the value 5 (which is the total number of cells in the reference). Can anyone explain why this would be the case? (The dates are actually 01/03/2008 (UK style) but I have used custom format to display them as mmm-yy. Also the dates are always the first of the month.) Then next part of my question is a little more complex. In column A I have a product names In column B I have the first date that this product was sold. In Column D to A I have the product sales by month. I would like to use the AVERAGE formula in in column C to calculate the average sales over time. However not all products have the same history; some are more recent than others; products have the value zero in the months before they appeared. Therefore if a product has been around since the start the formula will be =AVERAGE(D2:Z2) But if the product has only been around for the past three months the formula will be =AVERAGE(D2:F2) I would like to use the MATCH formula (or a similar formula) to replace the second cell reference in my AVERAGE formula. That is, a nested formula that references the values in column B (the date the product was first sold) and returns the appropriate column reference. I hope I have been clear.     - Cannot open shared Excel file because it is locked by own id A fellow user maintains an Excel file on a Windows Server 2000 box that is shared across a network. This user accesses the Excel file from his desktop which is running Windows XP SP2. Frequently, he cannot open his shared Excel file because it is locked by his own id. This problem persists for hours but at the longest is cleared up on its own by the next day. He does not have the Excel file open and there is no instance of process EXCEL.EXE executing on his desktop PC. I have tried asking him to: 1. Close Windows Explorer because it can read data about the file and hence leave it open. 2. Reboot his PC 3. Login to my PC using his User Id All to no avail. I have little control over the Window Server 2000 box hosting the shared Excel file in question. Is there anyway to further isolate the problem? For instance, are there known problems with Windows Server 2000 opportunistic locking support? If so, what fix level was it corrected in?     - Forcing a cell to be formatted as text - when using the Match Index Hello - I am trying to do use the Match and Index functions to perform a Vlookup. However, the column for which I am attempting to match values will not convert to text format (thus disallowing me from doing the Lookup). Does anyone have any suggestions. FYI, the way that I know that it isn't text is when I use the =istext() function, i get "false".     - Excel 2003 - VBA - SUMIF Here is a tough one: I have a table with rows of information including an ID Code. The ID code is made up of four characters, each meaning something distinct. I want to create a flexible reporting system where the user can specify which of these rows to include in the report. Up to here there have been no problems, example; Code IMDA specifies an account that is active, indicated by the "A". Most accounts are Active but there is also the possibility for it to be Inactive, in which case the Code would have been IMDI, for Inactive. To gather the Net Worth of these accounts, I simply look for the distinct code. SUMIF(A5:A1500,"IMDA",CW5:CW1500) SUMIF(A5:A1500,"IMDI",CW5:CW1500) Challenge: I would like to have the ability to use wildcards (+) in the Code to indicate that any character in that position should be considered a match. The above code would produce a report that has two cells showing all Active IMD accounts (IMDA), and all Inactive (IMDI). I would like to offer the user the ability to insert the wildcard by changing the code to be able to handle a Pseudo Code of IMD+ where the last character is inconsequential to a match. It was after discreetly manipulating the string (by adding extraneous spaces between the given items, as shown), it rendered the string to assemble as follows (See ?!) :- ZSL - Postion Indicator HS - Hand switch / Push Button SS - Selector switch DCS - Distributed Control System SDV - Shut down Valve BDV - Blow down Valve LCP - Local control Panel BSY - Solenoid Valve 3. Obviously, legibility of the string is at the mercy of the Cell- width ; subsequent changes of the Cell-width will render the string gibberish ...... and there, another repeated attempt to edit the string by adding or deleting the superfluous spaces here and there to rectify the situation. 4. One is indeed hapless to contemplate a correction by inserting Alt- Enter between the given items and eliminating the spacing strings in- situ. 5. Is there not an applicable formula to neutralize the exemplary loose string such that the subsequent normalization of the string would be an orderly assembly as shown above ? 6. Note that embedded in that item, Hand switch / Push Button, there are 2 spaces located on both sides of the slash(/). And there, the length of spacing strings would be 3 spaces and beyond. 7.     - Filter question Hi, I have a Pivot Table in Excel 2007 with data. I have a Date column. I need to filter the data so it shows me the data from 01-01-2008 and today date minus 1 day. I would like to have the data filtered automatically (without having to go everyday manually and change the filter date). I can see some auto filters to filter for yesterday, today, the last month, year to date, etc. I tried the Between option but it only lets me define dates, it doesn't let me define references to other cells or formulas (like =today()-1 for example)...     - Pivot Table Formatting I have read past posts on Pivot Table formatting and have achieved some success with the formatting problem. My current problem is that on one spreadsheet I have used AutoFormat to get the look I want for the Pivot Table. On this table I expanded the width of the columns and the formatting has held in place. I then created a new and separate spreadsheet file using the former one as a template. Everything looks great, except on this file, every time I refresh, the columns go back to the default width. I have tried enabling selection before widening the columns with no luck.     - General Novice Questions (Protection, Format) I have created a spreadsheet and have restricted a row and footing row (totals) from being changed by using the "format cells / protection" feature. I have left all the data entry rows unprotected so that the entry people can make changes. These entry rows have columns with specfics formats like Date, Currency, etc and I make it all look nice with the grid feature. Finally, I set "Tools /Protection/ Protect sheet" to active the protected cells. The problem is how can the user Insert new rows? To get around this, I created enough rows so that the user has the space they need (50 rows) to accomodate the necessary entries. The new problem is that if the user forgets to make any entry they have to Insert which they cannot do because of the protection. So, to get around this they can drag the lower existing data rows down, but then the opening they create loses the format that I set for that column and the nice grid I put in disappears in those rows?     - Validation Criteria & Ignore Blank (cells at bottom) Hi All, I have a named list that has a bunch of blank cells at the bottom so the user can grow the list as needed. The ignore blank check box in data validation looks tempting, but I still get all the blank cells at the bottom of my drop down list. This time, the first result appears in each cell, but if you look at the formula in copied cells, they show the correct formula has changed as I dragged it down the column.     - Changing a formula's result to text I have a pretty simple worksheet that lists the date in column A. In column B, I have a formula that converts the date in Column A to the proper day of week. When I put it in a pivot table, it treats column B as an individual date, not the proper DOW.     - Excel is giving me zeros Excel is giving me zeros. I'll put in a formula that very obviously should give a non-zero result, but the cell says "0".     - Excel 2007 Question I want to bring data into an excel 2007 worksheet that is stored in a sql database table. The idea is to parameterize the "where" clause in the sql select statement limiting the result set. There are lots of examples in the literature with regard to bringing in data stored in cubes --- but not so much from data in sql table. The basic issue is I want bring in descriptive information about say a contract (things like description, signing date, etc). I recorded a macro and Excel generated a series of codes as follows: Charts.Add ActiveChart.ChartType = xlLineMarkers ActiveChart.SetSourceData Source:=Sheets("Project Summary Report").Range( _ "A1:C4"), PlotBy:=xlColumns ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(1).Delete ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(1).XValues = _ "='Project Summary Report'!R2C1:R4C1" ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(2).XValues = _ "='Project Summary Report'!R2C1:R4C1" ActiveChart.Location Where:=xlLocationAsObject, Name:= _ "Project Summary Report" The values on the active sheet are actually generated from a query in Access 2003 and are automated to be displayed on an Excel spreadsheet. In other words, the query result set can get bigger. An example: 1st row indicates the column names "A", "B", "C" while 1st column indicates the rows "1", "2" and "3" ----A-------B--------C----- 1---Week--Target--Actual 2---1-------3---------3----- 3---2-------3---------4----- 4---3-------4---------5----- My question is does the range that is generated from ActiveChart.SetSourceData Source:=Sheets("Project Summary Report").Range( _ "A1:C4"), PlotBy:=xlColumns vary accordingly? Do I have to declare a variable say, 'rowCount' as worksheet1.UsedRange.Row.Count so that a variable range can be defined? Same applies for ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(1).Delete ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(1).XValues = _ "='Project Summary Report'!R2C1:R4C1" ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(2).XValues = _ "='Project Summary Report'!R2C1:R4C1" Do I have to declare a variable for the range of SeriesCollection(1).XValues?     - Cannot save Excel files to certain folders !! Has anyone else observed the anomaly of NOT being able to save a file to a folder because of the folder name syntax? In our company, we adopted a convention, many years ago, of using square brackets, such as "[" and "]", when naming certain hard disk folders. For example, "[ System ]" or "[ Dump ]" or "[ Shared ]" or "[ General ]" or "[ Library ]". This convention allowed us to give certain folders visual precedence by displaying them at the top of the directory listing when viewed in Windows Explorer and in application 'Open' dialogs. The square brackets also set the name visually apart. This convention also helped remove folders that would have otherwise been alphabetically interspersed amongst other unrelated folders. As such, the remaining folders, of a similar relation, were also kept together. This convention is perfectly legal within Windows. The naming of folders, using the square brackets, does not generate any error messages or syntax corrections. However, it does create a problem when trying to save new Excel worksheets to such a folder! A new worksheet CANNOT be saved to any folder with a pathname that includes square brackets. Another irony is that you can open an existing worksheet form such a folder and save it, after making changes, but you cannot save a new or 'Save As' worksheet in any such location. I suspect this relates somehow to the Excel convention of referencing cells in another worksheet by enclosing the worksheet name in square brackets. Either way, it has been a serious problem for us because this hard disk folder naming convention is so widespread in our small company. FIRST, it is extremely frustrating. SECOND, Excel should allow access to any file saved in a folder created following proper Windows Vista naming conventions. THIRD, we certainly consider this a BUG, or at best, a very serious oversight by Microsoft. FOURTH, it should be an embarrassment that a user cannot save a Microsoft application file to a Microsoft operating system folder, especially when they have followed proper naming conventions. FIFTH, we fear this could also happen if the users use other special characters as part of their naming convention.     - Older worksheet size I have several older worksheets. Each one has a corresponding macro (xlm) sheet. They are set up so that when a worksheet is opened, the macro sheet opens in the background (hidden). I want each worksheet to be the same size that exists when I save the file. Then, later when the file is opened, it goes from the size I gave it to a full screen window. The macro sheet has an Auto.Start command. It reads: =ECHO(FALSE) =Custom() ( This is a special set of commands for the worksheet ) =CALCULATION(1,FALSE,,,TRUE,FALSE,FALSE) =RETURN() What is making the file grow in size?     - Excel and Powerpoint? Hi, We use Office 2003 standard on Windows XP computers. All the computers are P4 2GHz machines with 1GB RAM. I have one user who has a problem with running Excel and Power Point at the same time. She can never demonstrate to the problem to me but says that they simply shutdown. No error messages or any indication why, they just go away and she looses her work. I've rebuilt the computer, from scratch, twice now and the problem persists.     - Merge cells I have a set of tables where I am putting descriptions before the tables that I would like to wrap. But the wrapping seems to be only for a specific cell. I would like my comments to span multiple cells and act as one cell, then wrap in that one new cell. I can do one row of text where the text spans multiple cells as long as there is nothing in the cells to the right. But I can't wrap a paragraph that way. In html, I would just do a Colspan= 5 to have the 1st span 5 cells as one. Can you do this type of thing in Excell 2007? I can use a label, but was curious if you can do it the other way.     - Closing Excel 2007 It seems to me that the behaviour differs depending upon the existance of files in the XLSTART folder: if that folder is empty, Excel closes correctly; if you have a PERSONAL.XLSB or similar file in the XLSTART folder then Excel doesn't close with the last workbook - presumably because the hidden workbook is the last workbook and that book isn't closed yet? Is it possible always to show the content of a specific cell in the frame of
Excel (so you always can see it). Then it is possible always, for examble, to
see the sum of some cells, when you are filling the underlying cells with
numbers.

In QuattroPro ver. 8.0 this was possible. In Danish this cell was called
"Lyncelle" - perhaps "Quick-cell" in English.

Excel 2002 and 2003 have a Watch Window toolbar that displays the value of
one or more cells. That may be what you want.
