We've had computers crash during a sync, which appears to destroy the
project file entirely (we get an "could not read the data inthis .rge file"
error). Is there a way to rebuild or force an overwrite of the .rge file
(short of unsharing and resharing the project, which is a big pain)?

Any help is, as always, appreciated.

Try doing a File:Export:Archive of the project, and then use that resulting
.rge package as a replacement for the one on the server.

What is the name of the .rge on the server?
I exported the project, but I am not sure where to place it.
