The Entourage Help Page
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/errors.html#anchor-error8796> suggests you
rebuild the database. If you're running Entourage X, first go to Entourage
-> Turn Off Office Notifications. Then, quit Entourage, and then restart
Entourage holding down the Option key. When the Rebuild dialog box comes
up, choose to do a Typical Rebuild.

I, too, am recieving this error. I've tried trashing my prefs,
rebuilding the database (both typical and advanced), reinstalling
Entourage, restarting my computer, EVERYTHING and I am still getting
this error code. Anything else to try!? Am I doomed to use the Mail
app? (ugh)
Thanks.

First use Remove Office (found in the Value pack on the CD) the remove
Office properly. (It won't touch your data.) Then reinstall it, then reapply
all the Office Updates.

Hmm, when I do that, it gives me this error:
PBCatSearchSync -1304
It continues "finding" files, and I hit to delete them, and then when
it's all done, nothing is deleted.
I am running Entourage X on 10.2.8.
Thanks.

That's definitely not an Entourage error. It must be a server error. Phone
up your ISP (comcast) and ask them what it means. They must have some error
on their mail server.

But I'm not even running Entourage, so I'm not connecting to my mail
server. This is happening when the Uninstall feature is searching for
any Office files.
I'll try looking on the Comcast message boards.
Thank you for your help!

Did you _install_ "Remove Office" on your hard disk using the Value pack
installer? Or were you trying to run it from the CD? You must install it
first.

Also go to /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions.
That might help.

I've never seen this error before. If you did install from the Value Pack,
delete Remove Office and empty the Trash, then install it again. Maybe you
got a faulty install.

Re: error -8796 by david

david
Wed Feb 25 10:43:09 CST 2004

I've been getting the same error, provoked by typing any three
characters into the "email to:" field. Both typical and advanced
rebuilds of the database didn't solve the problem.

I tried setting up a new identity, to at least see if I could import
my contacts and access them (you know, because in the middle of
debugging, I still had to get work done!). Light began to dawn when
during the contact import process, some of the Entourage dialogs
displayed funny--the instructions and other text in the dialog was too
big, and overflowed the borders. Sure enough, even this empty
Entourage identity, with no emails and no contacts ALSO got Error
-8796 when typing any three characters in the "email to:" field.

I believe that Error -8976, at least in my case, represented a font
problem. Which didn't surprise me, because I'd long suspected I was
due for one, having dutifully followed instructions with Extensis
Suitcase X11 and turned on "Manage System Fonts". Ever since then,
various programs have seemed unstable. (The whole concept of a 21st
century OS being brought to its knees by font problems is a whole
other topic...)

I did a fresh install of Panther on a separate partition, and then
booted into OS 9 (to circumvent permissions and "file in use"
problems). I copied the contents of System/Library/Fonts and
Library/Fonts from the brand-new install into my working system
folder.

After rebooting, not only does Entourage work, but even the old
database files (before rebuilding) now miraculously works.

Warning: Of course, tampering with system fonts is asking for trouble,
and you could easily wreck things. I'd like to think what I did,
though, was to undo the problems caused by letting Suitcase X11 do its
own unsupervised fiddling with the same font folders.

By the way, if you get out of your current Entourage mess, my advice
is to keep frequent backups of the database file, regularly export
contacts, and archive old email. All of us probably rely on Entourage
to manage a lot of critical information, and being without it is a
killer.

That's correct. The error is in using software which messes with anything in
System Library. The regular Library and user Library both provide Fonts
folders with more than enough flexibility. In fact, it's possible that the
corrupt font was in /Library/Fonts which you also replaced.

For what it is worth. I also did the trashing prefs and even reinstalle
the whole suit but in the end. It was a font problem. I Went int
entourage perferences and changed the default font to one I knew woul
load every time and now its working. I don't know if this will help yo
but its easy and worth a shot if you can get it to open.
