You didn't specify which version of Entourage you are using so it's hard to
give specific advice. I'm going to assume you are using Entourage X...

You need to identify the source of your problem.

Create a new User in System Preference and see if Entourage will launch
there. If yes, then it's a problem in your User's folder. If no, then it's a
bad install of Entourage or in your OS.

Fix for problems in User's folder:

Still having problems? Use Remove Office, install from the CD and apply
updates. This will fix a bad install of Entourage.

Let us know how this works...and give more details about your setup.

Thanks for your reply. I use Entourage X.

Prior to your reply, I removed the Office X Identity (from the
Microsoft User Data folder) that was experiencing the hanging.
Entourage loaded successfully with the other identities remaining.

To isolate the problem, I created a new Entourage identity that ran
fine. I then attempted to replace this identity's Office X Identity
Database file with the Office X Identity Database file from the old
identity that spun its wheels forever. The original problem
re-occurred.

I scanned the file and the rest of my hard drive for viruses. No
viruses.

To me, it seems like this Office X Identity Database file has been
corrupted. Is there a repair option? Is anything from the file
salvageable? Should I follow the instructions laid out below? What
are the consequences of deleting Entourage preferences and removing
Office given that I have two fully functional Entourage identities?

Thks so much,
Ben

Do an Advanced Rebuild of the database: hold down option key at launch (if
launching into the corrupt identity) and choose Advanced. If you're now in
some other identity, go to Entourage/Switch Identity. When the "Switch" list
comes up, choose the corrupt identity, and hold down the Option key while
clicking OK, then choose Advanced in the window that comes up.
