I get a message saying that entourage cannot access my data and suggests that I rebuild my database. A typical rebuild failed ("compacting failed") with a message that a read/write error has occurred (-40). An advanced rebuild generated the same message and an additional message that it is likely my database cannot be repaired. I have Office x 2001 and the other programs seem to work fine.

Negative errors low in number usually involve hardware problems.

From the Error Page

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/page.html>

Error -40

Compacting failed. A read/write error has occurred (-40)

Error -40 is a positioning error (tried to position before start of file).
This might indicate file system corruption. Try running Apple's Disk
Utility: First Aid and repairing the disk till it shows clean.

The Disk Utility can only check the S.M.A.R.T. status of your disk but
it can not check for hardware problems such as bad RAM a failing
motherboard, etc.

Your Mac probably came with a separate diagnostic CD or the diagnostics
came on the original Mac OS X installer disk that came with your Mac.

Insert this disk and reboot with the Option key held down. You'll be
able to select the diagnostics disk and verify more of your hardware.

Hope this helps!
