 - Warning - Manual rebuild of database loses lots of data In an earlier article <julianvREMOVE_THIS_PART-9FFA8A.02431623042008@70-3-168-216.area5.spcsdns .net> I reported that my Entourage database showed symptoms of corruption after an upgrade from Office 2004 to 2008. It looks like there are other people seeing database problems after this upgrade. I tried the solution recommended by Diane Ross, manually importing my 2008 database into a new identity, as described in the instructions she maintains on this page: <http://www.entourage.mvps.org/import_export/manual_04_08.html> I exported all items from my 2008 database to an Entourage archive (.rge file). I then quit Entourage, removed the Main Identity folder, and restarted Entourage to create a new Main Identity. Then I imported data from the archive. Diane has probably not tested her instructions on an IMAP account. On my first connection to my IMAP account, Entourage downloaded duplicates of all the messages that had already been fully downloaded into the database. But far more troubling is the amount of data that was lost in this manual rebuilding process. Entourage preferences were lost and had to be re-entered. Email account settings were lost (I have two accounts, one is POP and the other is IMAP). Schedules were lost. Rules were lost. UI display settings (column and sort settings, toolbar customizations, etc.) were lost. Custom categories were lost. This one is a killer for me, because I have been using categories and colors to label several types of important calendar events and contacts, facilitating quicker searches over years of appointments and hundreds of contact cards. My color choices were also lost, replaced by Microsoft's standard pastel colors, some of which are very hard to read in text on a white background. Messages in my email folders are sorted by received date. For all the imported emails in my POP account, the received dates were lost, replaced by today's date. I don't use links, but I think that this data is lost, too. This project has taken several hours so far, and I'm not close to restoring the lost information. Much of it probably cannot be restored with any reasonable amount of manual work. I'm debating whether to keep running with this gutted database. The alternative is to go back to my former database, and live with the occasional corruption glitches, hoping that it does not fail catastrophically. Perhaps the next update to Entourage will include an improved database repair capability, which can fix the problems that users are seeing when importing from 2004. Diane, do you know if that's likely to happen? By the way, my griping is not meant to disparage the work of Diane and the other MVPs who have been putting extraordinary effort into helping users in this forum. I am, however, disappointed with the coders and managers who work on Entourage. I think this product has become too complex and bloated, buggy, hard to maintain.  - Entourage handles application/applefile differently A word document attached to an email sent through a webmail service (Yahoo, for example) is attached (possibly incorrectly) with a Content-Type of application/applefile. When received using Entourage, the attachment can not be viewed. It is decoded to a 0 byte file that displays (in Word) as a blank page. I can change the raw email received so that the Conten-Type header reads application/octetstream and then display it again using Entourage and the attachment is decoded correctly. The attachment is also shown without error when using AppleMail, Thunderbird on the Mac, and also when using Thunderbird or Outlook Express on a PC. Using the same webmail service to send, Word documents are attached with Content-Type: "application/msword" headers and these are processed correctly. So the questions are: Why is Entourage not able to save/open these applefile attachments in the same way as the other email clients, and Why is Firefox treating a word document as an application/applefile where Safari is able to recognise it properly?  - Rebuild Entourage 2004 Database (11.4.1) Exchange 2003 account resend We have had this happen a lot with our users. Our Entourage clients will get a corrupted database,the little box pops up to rebuild. We rebuild and then from the moment we open Entourage it starts sending old messages that user has all ready sent (we know because the other said has all ready replied!) again!! We use Exchange 2003 SP2 with a FE/BE, Mac OS X 10.4.11 with Office 2004 (11.4.1). The users mailbox is around 1.5GB on the exchange side, there DB is 4GB! Why is Entourage so broken?  - Meeting Cancellation from Outlook User does not Remove Item from I received and accepted a Meeting Request sent from an Outlook user. Subsequently, the event organizer sent a Meeting Cancellation.  - Opening a shared Exchange calendar Exchange 2003. Entourage 2004 and 2008 (tried on both). Until today, I was able to open shared calendars using Entourage. I am still able to view calendars of those mailboxes already added to my folder list, but I am unable to open new shared calendars. The mailbox icon appears in the Folder list for the mailbox whose calendar I'm trying to view, but the calendar never becomes available. I don't see any event log errors on the server. However sometime today, Entourage simply stopped retrieving my work Exchange email. I am still able to send emails both internal (company) and external, but have not received an email in about 8 hours. When I hit the 'Send/Receive' button everything seems to function normally and there are no errors. However there is no new email either. I can use Safari/Firefox and retrieve my email via OWA from my MacBook and all the mail is current, but for some reason, Entourage is not receiving any new email (which is strange since it's also OWA). I have tried cleaning out all new email (since Entourage stopped retrieving), thinking that there could be a currupt email. I have tried retrieving on multiple networks so I can eliminate a Network issue (plus I have been able to get email on Safari/Firefox via OWA). Thanks!  - Copying/pasting Excel table to Entourage as a table Hi, all, I've read earlier discussions about the inability to copy and paste Excel tables into Entourage without the data format going FUBAR. There may have been updates since Office 2008 was released but currently there seems to be 2 solutions: 1. Paste as picture - this seems inadequate because recipients might not see the picture or see it as an attachment, and might want to copy the data 2.  - old emails getting resent unexpectedly We are using Entourage in an Exchange environment and we occasionally have a user who reports old emails being resent from Entourage. It seem to be happening from the Client side and tends to happen to people with large mailboxes or to people who might be in need of a database rebuild-- sometimes it happens right after a database rebuild. Obviously this causes some confusion for the recipients of these old emails and it annoys our users who have to explain this to everyone who gets confused.  - Can connect with OWA but not with Entourage 2008 to Exchange 2003 We have Exchange 2003 at work. I can connect directly to our Exchange 2003 server with Entourage 2008 over VPN. I can connect using Safari to our OWA server (it uses form based authentication and SSL) I can NOT connect to our OWA server with Entourage 2008 with SSL. It says I have the wrong username of password or security setting. What gives? Our office is phasing out VPN so I need to be sure I can continue to use Entourage 2008. For Outlook on Windows they have set up an Exchange proxy server using basic authentication which works fine on Windows but I cannot connect with Entourage 2008. Thanks for any help. If I click on a link in Entourage it opens up in an new tab in my standard-browser (Firefox) and so far that's ok, but I don't want the browser to steal Entourage's focus.  - Entourage 2008 does not deliver attachment Greetings, I was sent a .webloc (a text/xml file) attachment and received it in the newly installed Entourage 2008. Entourage blocked the attachment with the "friendly" note "Entourage has blocked the following potentially unsafe attachments: [name] <Remove them> <Learn more...>" The "Learn more..." option provides the following. <being Help> Cause: For security reasons, Entourage blocks attachments that could potentially harm your computer. Solution: If you do not trust that the attachment is safe, delete it from your computer. Solution: If you trust the message sender and want to receive the attachment, ask the sender to compress the file and then send it to you again. <end Help> It seems to me that this is not a reasonable procedure for handling this situation. Entourage should warn me there might be a risk, but it should not unilaterally strip the file off and tell me later to tell the sender to resend. In fact if the file were malware it could be just as risky when unzipped as when it is uncompressed. So the stripping and warning serve only to annoy the user.  - unwanted reminders I am getting unwanted reminders when creating calendar items in entourage 2008. I have done the following in Outlook: - Entourage menu>Turn off Office Reminders - Entourage menu>Preferences>Calendar>Unchecked default reminder of 15 minutes - When creating the event, unchecked the reminder box Yet, after all this, after creating the event, my Outlook client shows the event as having a 15 minute reminder!  - Forms in Entourage?? Does anybody know if Microsoft Entourage supports the use of forms that can be embedded in messages like Microsoft Outlook for Windows does? My IT department uses a special form that is basically like a repair tag, and whenever anybody has a problem with their computer, that person can open up the preformatted form and tell us what the problem is, and then we can pass that on to the appropriate tech guy. I found something on the web, but it didn't work on my kollegues MacOS. The Exchange-Server has the IP-Address 192.168.130.222. This Server is also the DomainController of the domain kirche-kuecknitz.de. Typically, the message states that the user's password was rejected or that the e-mail address needs to be verified. Fix: * If your POP server and SMTP server names include "sbcglobal," substitute "att" instead. For example, change "smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com" to "smtp.att.yahoo.com." But don't change the "sbcglobal" term in your e-mail address (such as steve@sbcglobal.net)--that remains the same. * Enable SSL for your POP server and select to override the default POP port with port 995. * Enable SSL for your SMTP server and select to override the default SMTP port with port 465. After doing all this, your e-mail problems should be gone. If not--and if you continue to get errors about your account needing to be verified--the apparent cause is a problem on AT&T's end.
