I went through the first few steps to archive only calendar items older than
a specific date (older than 3 months) and I aborted as I found no
opportunity to specify age of events. Where am I missing that?

You need an additional step first. Create a category called something like
³archive², click on the All Items calendar custom view, sort by date, select
the older items and then assign them to the ³archive² category. Now you can
Export that category.
