need specific advice on methods to get email and sync
Hi all -
I'm looking for advice on how to stay connected to my email,
addressbook, appointment calendar, and bookmarks. I'm new to OSX and the
options available there, and am now all confused about the different
software and possible mechanisms out there for sync'ing, etc. (what's
Entourage? How's it compare to Outlook, Eudora, etc.? What's .MAC? is it
relevant? etc.) I have the following setup. At work, we have a Microsoft
Exchange server handling email sent to my main office email address. I have
a desktop Mac (older G4, w/ OS9, but could be upgraded to OSX if needed)
running Outlook (not Outlook Express, the full Outlook) in my office, and a
laptop at home (soon to be an OSX powerbook). Sometime soon I also hope to
get a PDA of some sort (probably a PDA/cell phone combo). I'd like people's
advice on software/structure suggestions for the following two problems:
1) I can get my email at work with Outlook, which connects up to our
Exchange server. I cannot use it to get POP3 email from other email
services, because the Microsoft Outlook client for Mac does not have a POP3
module! Also, I cannot use Outlook at home because (according to my
sysadmin) they have the network set up so that the LDAP (whatever the hell
that is) is inaccessible from outside our internal firewall. Is there
anything that can be done? I am able to check it using this web-based
interface, but that's not convenient at all... And, is there any solution
which would let me run the same, decent email client on both machines? That
way, at least at work I could get both POP3 email and my Exchange server
email. Does Entourage do that? How does Entourage compare with Outlook - is
it a similar product? It would be great if the email client also let me read
newsgroups. By the way, I'm on Comcast cablemodem at home; is there any way
to get the newsgroups from a machine outside my home? Last time I tried it,
I think the Comcast news server refused connections which were not from one
of "their" machines. Any way around that?
2) What I'd like to do is to set it up such that I have access to *one*
calendar, contacts, and hopefully bookmark database. Whether it be through a
separate server or by sinc'ing to one of the machines, I'd like to be able
to make changes to any of these on any one of the machines (PDA, laptop, or
office Mac), and have the updated info be available to the others. Right
now, my calendar is on Outlook in my office, and is not visible from
anywhere since it's stored on my local machine. Same for the addressbook.
What's the best solution for keeping a single place for all this stuff that
can then be accessed remotely? Outlook is a pain anyhow, since the calendar
reminders won't pop up unless I run Outlook and click on the calendar thing,
so I wouldn't mind changing to another software.

What's the alternative?
Since the update didn't give us the ability to use Exchange public
calendars, what's the alternative to Entourage/Exchange for group calendars?
My company, which is a mix of PCs and Macs, waited patiently for the update,
but now we must make a decision. Mail can be handled easily any number of
ways but we need group calendars, preferably not web-based. Is there such an

Entourage Calendar and iCal
My dilemma is that iCal looks better and allows calendar entries to span
multiple vertical lines of text (if you insert soft returns), but Entourage
correctly displays events spanning multiple days while iCal does not. That
leaves me to choose between them. I have tried syncing both, but because
that can produce duplicates I'm loath to try that route.

I'm curious about Paul Berkowitz' AppleScript called Sync Entourage-Address
Book. Isn't it possible to have both iSync and the Entourage conduit
enabled, so that the script is no longer necessary?

Hotsyncing Entourage X with Palm Tungsten E
Does anyone know whether it's possible to hotsync Entourage X for Mac
OS X.2 with the Palm Tungsten E, which runs Palm Desktop software OS
4.1?
I'm currently using an older Palm handheld, which hotsyncs fine with
Entourage X. The Microsoft website description of the MS Handheld
Synchronization Software says that it works only with Palm OS 4.0. I'm not
sure whether Microsoft considers 4.1 the same version or an entirely
different one. (All new Palms run either OS 4.1 or 5.0.)

Configuring Entourage with Web Access ONLY
I there a method or a work around to configure Entourage to send and
received mail to and from my POP account through web access only?
I need to have it work as if I am in my home office and connected to
my ISP. I travel and consult 4 days per week and only have web access
from hotels and corporate offices.
The webmail interface I am using provided from my ISP, just does not
cut it!

Exchange and 2 IMAP Accounts
I have recently connected Entourage to an Exchange server. I have another
independent imap account. Now when my schedule, "Send & Receive All" runs if
fails. The message indicates that two of the Exchange folders do not exist.
The output of tcpflow indicates that Entourage is trying to sync these two
Exchange folders from my independent imap account.
Has anybody seen this behavior (leakage between imap accounts) and fixed it?

Entourage and Palm Pilot HotSync
I have downloaded all the latest updates for Office and for Entourage,
but when I HotSync calendar events that are set down for say 1pm on my
Palm turn into 12pm in Entourage. And when I try to drag the Entourage
event down into the proper space it refuses to go there. Has anyone
had a similar issue?

Hi guys
I'm new to Entourage and just swapping over from using Mail.
Any idea how I get Entourage to sync with my .Mac account?
I've managed to transfer my emails, but now my .Mac account's empty so I
can't access my emails from other computers.

iSync and Entourage
Does anybody use iSync concurrently with Entourage? What are the
benefits/pitfalls? I would like to use Entourage as my e-mail client and
have its database of addresses sync to my Palm, but I want to use
AddressBook.app and iCal as well.

I typed this in a mail message: "Hi-i-i-i" When I added the second
quotation marks, the last i became an l. Repeatable. Does it do that
for everyone or am I just so special?

Accessing Old Database
Does anyone know how to tap into an "old database?" I had
to do an advanced rebuild of my database and have appeared
to have lost all of my emails. I can see my old database in
my Identities folder, but every time I open Entourage it
creates a new database and cache (and ignores the old one).

Ways to separate folders?
I've so many mailbox folders I'd like to be able to put a rule (a line)
inbetween different groups of them -- is there a way to visually do that in

After I installed this morning the update to MacOS X10.2.8 and iCal as well
as iSync. It responds with an erro message that it can¹t find LDAP server
for BigFoot or four11. I never have used these directories. How can I get

Calendar changes take too long to propogate to exchange server
When I add something to the calendar, it can take up to 30-40 minutes
to propogate to the exchange server. anyone know how to speed this
up.

uninstall, the reinstall, the updates (again), the script run again. Oi! And
nada...
I think I'm starting to see what the problem is, with only some mailboxes
being imported from Mail. There have been several imports of mailboxes, from
other email apps INTO Mail (from Outlook, for Eudora, etc.) -- those must
have created weird maiboxes, in the process, that the Apple Script just
doesn't like or recognize.
ANYWAY...my latest strategy has been to run an Apple Script that I found
that will turn my existing mailboxes in the Mail app into .mbx files, and
then put all of those into a folder on my desktop.
So now, how can I get those .mbxs into Entourage. Any idea? I thought
Entourage recognized or used .mbxs ...yes?

Positioning window in Entourage for REPLY
When I click on the REPLY button, to reply to an email, the new window that
opens up for me jumps waaaaaaaaay over to the left of my monitor screen (I
have a very long Apple Cinema Display monitor). I then have to move my hand
from my keyboard over to the mouse to grab the window's corner and pull the
window in front of me, to begin my typing. How do I change this, so the

Where do 'removed' attachments go?
Preface: Entourage X (with service release 1), OS 10.2
Question: When you remove an attachment, what happens to it? This comes from
a problem I just encountered, I received a series of pdf files which I saved
to the hard-disk and then 'removed' from the emails (and then deleted the
emails). However after doing so my database ballooned by 20MB (about the
size of all of the pdf files). Now I can't get the database onto my flash
card to take to work.

Unable to change due date in a task
When I try to create a task in Entourage (version 10.1.4) everything
works except that if I try and change the due date, it sets it to 1st
Jan 2004, no matter what date I select (either on the pop-up calendar
or by manually typing the date in)

Graphics in mail merge?
I'm doing mail merges with Word using my Entourage address
book as the data source. I create a form letter, which
includes some graphics (pictures, logo, etc), in Word.
Then I insert the appropriate merge fields, select the
desired recipients from the address book, then perform the
actual merge.
My Entourage outbox will then display the recipients and,
when a recipient is selected, Entourage displays the
merged form letter for that recipient below.
The problem is that the graphics (pictures, logo, etc.)
that appear in the original form letter in Word (and in
the previewed merged form letter) do not appear in the
merged form letters in Entourage. They're just gone -
replaced with white space. Where'd they go? What am I
doing wrong here? Why doesn't Entourage retain these
graphics? Can I not have graphics in merged form letters
in Entourage?

i've downloaded the office X test drive and set up an emap account in
entourage.
the folder list opens correctly, but when i click on someof the subfolders
(not inbox) entourage just terminates ("no other apps affected").
any idea or similar experience?

Scheduling Sent Mail
is there a way to set up Entourage to have certain messages go out at
specified times from a specified account?
that is ... i want account #1 to send/receive when i press the
send/receive button.
on account #2 i want to be able to write a message and *onyl* have it
sent at a specified time. like 6am. *but* i also want to write another
message at the same time and have it go out at 6pm. that is... i don't
want both messages to go out at once.

Pulling out mailboxes for archiving...
I'd read somewhere on Mactopia, I think, where if you want to "archive"
mailboxes you can just drag them to your desk top and store them that way.
But when I do that -- drag a mailbox out of Entourag -- it DOES go over to
my desktop BUT it also leaves that same mailbox exactly where it was in
Entourage's ON MY COMPUTER list/pane. So it's just making a copy of the
mailbox, not removing it. What's that about? I want to get some mailboxes
OFF of Entourage and just store them for archving.

I can't send to my client email list of 500... says it's too long... anyway to change limits?
I've tried making smaller lists of down to 40 and I still get the
error message of too many addresses. I never had this problem with
Outlook. Anyone know how to change the limit? Does anyone know what

I can't seem to send mail to people with the msn.com account. I have
several joke lists that I send out. Any with the msn.com hang up and
won't send. I'm assuming it's a problem with their server, but since
this has been going on for several days, I'm beginning to wonder. The
error message I get says:
"Mail could not be sent using the account "writermd@High-Speed
Internet."

Does anyone know what and how Entourage connects to hotmail.
We have a complexe network with firewalls and cache servers, and users
can not use entourage to get hotmail.
