The best solution seems to be to simply persuade people to stop sending
winmail.dat files to begin with. ; )

In the mean time, the following utility can extract the original
attachments.

TNEF Enough (free download from http://www.joshjacob.com/macdev/tnef/index.html)

PS. You may want to alert the sender not to send you RTF messages
since this is the most likely culprit for causing the winmail.dat
problem.

Bummer that Microsoft didn't put in support for winmail.dat in the Office 2008 release of Entourage.
