Using an alias for Mud

I'm thinking of using alias for MUD folder, and putting original in my data
folder on external HD. Alias tend to break no? Is this not a good idea.
What do you all think? Thanks.

It can work; I've done it. You might want to try a sym link, using
something like Tinker Tool to set it up. It's similar to an alias, but
a Unix-y thing, and some say it is more robust.

I actually have used a symlink for my entire user folder, "allen", when
I wanted to run Tiger on a small partition and keep Panther, and my
user folder, on another partition. But I set that up in Netinfo
Manager, where it is quite easy to do.

The only problem I've had with the alias is if I boot into a cloned volume
rather than the one with the original alias. Then it's a simple matter of
creating a new alias.

Symbolic aliases, which are beyond my level of technical understanding,
could prevent some broken alias problems.

I've aliased my MUD folder from an OS-free data volume and Office 2004 from
an OS-free applications volume. It's important to nip off the word "
alias"--including the leading space before "alias".

symlinks are just the UNIX version of the alias.
Most of the time, they point to a static direction (eg: "/Volumes/Other
Drive/Users/Norman/Documents/Microsoft User Data" for instance). It's
pretty good for apps using command-line programs, and it works well with
the other ones, but all symlinks would break if you change the name of
the drive or move the file for instance (since then the path would be
incorrect). It's a bit rigid.

Just did my first reboot since putting alias for Mud, and all Office stuff
had problems launching. I click on the alias and everything is fine.
So puzzled. Not sure it the same issue.
