symlinks are just the UNIX version of the alias.
Most of the time, they point to a static direction (eg: "/Volumes/Other
Drive/Users/Norman/Documents/Microsoft User Data" for instance). It's
pretty good for apps using command-line programs, and it works well with
the other ones, but all symlinks would break if you change the name of
the drive or move the file for instance (since then the path would be
incorrect). It's a bit rigid.
