Automatic character set problem (sending messages)
(OS 10.4.2, Entourage 2004)
The "Automatic" setting on the Character Set menu does not seem able to
select the correct character set depending on the text actually typed.
For example with the Greek (ISO) setting one needs to specifically
select it from the menu when composing the message in order for it to
be legible by the recipient. The corresponding codes in the received
messages are the following (from "view source"):
Greek text or mixed greek and latin characters sent with "automatic":
Windows-1254
Latin charactes with US keyboard sent with "automatic": US-ASCII
Greek characters sent with the Greek (ISO) command: ISO-8859-7 (this is
the one that works).
I have created a keyboard shortcut for selecting the right set, but it
is easy to forget to do it and it would be nice if entourage would
automatically select the correct one.
Please let me know of any solutions or tell me a way to report this as
a bug.
Many thanks

Sent Items doesn't update when sending messages from Entourage
I have a G5 with 10.4.1 and Entourage 2004 (SP2) and a PC with XP Pro
(SP1) and Outlook 2003 (SP2). Both in a corporate environment,
connected to Exchange 2003. What's strange is, when I send mail (from
either computer), the sent items folder on Entourage only reflects mail
sent from Outlook. If I want to look at mail I sent from Entourage I
have to look at the Sent Items folder on Outlook. Unless I empty cache
from the Sent Items folder in Entourage - then it will update with
every sent item that's on the Exchange server (this is obviously time
consuming and I have to do it every time I want to update the Sent
Items). This problem does not exist in Outlook. Outlook has every
message I've ever sent from my Exchange mailbox. The same Exchange
account is being used on both computers. This problem existed before
upgrading to SP2 in Entourage but I don't think it existed before our
Exchange admin upgraded to Exchange 2003.
Could this be because of the Exchange upgrade? Any help is appreciated. Tag: Switching from IMAP to POP Tag: 59638
Very Very slow sync to exchange 2000
We are having trouble with a very slow synchronization between Entourage SP2
and exchange 2000. I installed SP2 last week on a couple of machines and
tried to get a couple of us in the office setup on it to test it out.
After setting up the account, it starts to sync to exchange, but seems to be
going at much bellow normal speed. Each email seems to take a couple of
minutes to download, and as I have around 3000 emails, it was still trying
to sync after 2 full days and nights! I temporarly gave up in the end and
went back to IMAP, and all the email came down very quickly.
Anybody else had this, or know what it may be?

Entourage 2004 and multipart/mixed bug
Entourage 11.1 (and 11.2) has a problem showing following message. It
only shows later attachment but not the first text part.
If I reply/forward this message Entourage shows the text. (I have tried
turning off the complex HTML setting and it did not help here. Which is
natural as the text part do not contain HTML)
So it seems that Entourage has a bug in its multipart logic.

Is it possible to merge Entourage 2004 data?
Help please.
I am running Office 2004 and OS 10.4.2. By some mysterious means, I
seem to have created (?) multiple identities, even though I have only
one e-mail account. Is there a way I can merge the contacts, in box
messages etc into my one main identity? Some of the identity files
seem large (420MB) and I don't want to loose anything. Hopefully a
merge would also eliiminate dplicates, I'll manually delete duplicates
rather than type stuff over. Searching the KB produced no results.
Thanks for any assistance,

Ent X IMAP messages flagged as read without being read
I've got a problem in the office where one system, running Entourage v.X
is flagging messages in the IMAP Inbox as read even though they have not
been read by the user.
This just started happening a week or so back. I've not been able to
find a logical explanation for the problem.
There are no IMAP rules in place.
Messages are *not* set to be flagged as read if displayed in the preview
pane for any length of time. This person doesn't even use the Preview
pane.
I'm 99% certain that he (or someone else) isn't reading the messages
from another machine and changing the flags remotely.
I've done both typical & advanced rebuilds already-no change in state.
Next on my list is a complete new identity (export contacts & calendar,
then re-enter email info from scratch), but I'd rather not go that route.
Any other suggestions on where I should be looking?
Thanks.

synchronizing entourage btwn two computers
so, I have been looking around and can't get a definitive answer. Can
entourage be synchronized between two computers? I need to sync
calendar, emails, contacts, address book, notes, etc.
I am using a power book g4 and an ibook g4. running on OSX 10.4.2. I am
not always on a network.
If this isn't possible, what is a better program to use?

Archival and search.
Dear Colleagues:
I now understand (much to my disappointment) that the most important feature
in OS X 10.4 Tiger which in my humble opinion is Spotlight does not work in
Entourage.
I am about to archive several mailboxes I have in Entourage and the database
size is currently approaching the limit of 4 GB. The last time I performed
an archival of mailboxes Entourage created a file with an .mbox extension
for every mailbox I archived. It's been a while since I've done it. If my
memory servers me right I dragged the mailboxes I wanted to archive to the
desktop to do it. Then I simply created a folder where I stored the mailbox
files for archival purposes. In case this is not the right procedure, I
would appreciate if any colleague could point out what the right procedure
is.
It seems to me that the .mbox format is not searchable by Spotlight. Is this
right ?
In case these .mbox files created from the archival of Entourage mailboxes
are not indexed and searched by Spotlight, is there a way to archive these
mailboxes that would make them searchable ?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Dear Mr. Berkowitz et al... a number of problems. Please help!
Hello
I hope you can help me. I have recently 'converted' my wife to Mac OS
after her being a lifelong Windows user.
She was a power Outlook user and is seriously disappointed by
Entourage, and I cannot solve her problems. We appeal to you and anyone
else for help.
She is using a G4 PB, OS 10.3.9
Entourage 2004
She has almost 3900 contacts- she is an international film Sales Agent
and has contacts from countries world wide. I didn't think this number
would be a problem, but...
The problems are:
1. She receives all mail twice. How can she end this?
2. Entourage is incredibly slow.
a. When choosing a window in the Address Book, it takes an
unbelievably long time to initiate
b. When switching a column view, it takes an unbelievably long time to
initiate
3. When you open a contact, she cannot see all the main info like in
Outlook. Is there any way to see the complete "Notes" section? This is
very important for her
4. The search tool in contacts: Not only is it painfully slow, but it
does not have an method (as she had in Outlook) using 'Find' to search
any field.
5. When she sorts by country, the results are jumbled. Is there a way
to have results of a search open alphabetically? (If she open a search
with all 'Germany' buyers, can it open alphabetically?)
6. She needs to use groups extensively- once she creates a group, how
can she modify/change them and easily find them?
Can anyone recommend a great tutorial to read???
Many thanks,

Updated Calendar events problems
I haven't been able to find this problem in other posts:
Entourage 2004, Exchange 2003. Mixture of PC's and Macs (about 150
Macs, 3500pc's). The issue seems to only happen to the Macs which are
running OS 10.3.8 with Open Directory server 10.4.2.
Accepting an invitation to a calendar event seems to work fine. If
there is an update to that event, it doesn't work right:
Before SP2, sometimes the "Updated: " invite would have the same day
and time as the original meeting, and therefore, even if the user
accepts the update, it won't reflect any change in the user's calendar.
I decided to wait for SP2 to see if it was resolved.
Since SP2: It seems now the problem is that the OLD event doesn't get
deleted, causing multiple instances of the same meeting. Obviously,
this is a problem. I almost drove out of town for a meeting that was
updated from yesterday to next week.
I have checked my time zone on my computer and in Entourage- they do
match.
The only workaround that I have found is to accept any updated meeting
invitations via Outlook Web Access. This correctly updates the meeting
and deletes the old one. This also worked fine before SP2. I don't
want to tell 150 people that they have to use OWA to accept calendar
events. Please help.

Hello,
I recently had an employee leave our firm. Upon their departure they

entourage memory problem?
i am a brand new mac user - i have a new powerbook g4 and use entourage

the program has been working smoothly but then all a sudden yesterday
it wouldn't download my email.
it says that there are 17 messages left to download and comes up with
an error message that there isn't enough memory. (but there has to be
enough memory because it's a brand new machine...and i looked at the
mailbox online that entourage is downloading mail from (through a POP
address) and it's not full either.)

Attaching files shows weird icon
Hey all,
When one of my users goes into the open attachment dialog box to select
the file to attach, if he clicks on ANY folder in that dialog box, the
rightward-pointing triangle (which points to the contents of the folder
in the next column) turns into a yellow upward-pointing triangle with
an exclamation point in the middle.
It's bizarre. This doesn't happen in any other programs or any other
dialogs in Entourage. (It's Office 2004.)
Is this a feature???

A minor issue/annoyance
My somewhat late transfer from Office X to Office 2004 has gone quite
smoothly, however, one thing keeps annoying me. In Office X apple-, opened
up the assign categories selection, in Office 2004 it opens up the
preferences window. As far as I can see there is no longer a key combination
opening the assign categories selection (which I do a lot, whereas I only
rarely open the preferences, does anyone open it so regularly that it needs
a key combination?). Anyway, is there a simple way to assign a key
combination to the assign categories selection? Tag: Switching from IMAP to POP Tag: 59566

Entourage Rule shortfalls...
Recently I was asked by a friend to help his wife out with some
confusion she was having with her Entourage on the Mac. It turns out
that the mail server she uses had recently been switched to allow for
access through IMAP only. (Previous to this she connected to the
server using POP3.)
As she had been using the old setup for quite some time (although I'd
upgraded her through the various versions of Office X) she found the
new look of her access to her mail folders via IMAP quite confusing.
I decided that I'd make her IMAP environment look as much like the POP3
folder structure as possible by setting up rules to move her incoming
mail to her local inbox and her sent mail to her local sent folder.
Simple, right? Nope!
It turns out that there is no trigger for actions to be performed when
mail is retrieved or when mail is sent like there is in the PC
implementation of Office 2003. On top of that if I tried to setup a
option/preference to have her sent mail deposited to a local Sent Mail
folder the software ONLY allows you to use an IMAP folder on the
server!
I don't have a Mac in front of me right now or I'd probably also run
through a bunch of user interface inconsistencies I ran across as well
during this process.
I'm betting that MS will not address these shortcomings in the current
version of Office and probably just opt to implement them in the new
Office 2004 but I was really disappointed with the discrepancy in
capability between the PC and Macintosh implementations of their mail
client.
If anyone has a work around for this I'd been keen to hear it. (I did
update her software to the latest revision of Office X prior to trying
to do this.)
Cheers! Tag: Switching from IMAP to POP Tag: 59563

Bug in Entourage: Can't adjust QuickTime volume in preview pane
Hi gang,
I've discovered a bug in Entourage that I'd like to report to the
Macintosh Businss Unit:
When you receive an incoming email message that has an attached
QuickTime file (this file could be a .mpg movie, a .wav audio file, an
.mp3 file, or any of the many formats that QuickTime recognizes), you
can WATCH the file within the preview pane but you cannot adjust the
VOLUME from within the preview pane. When you click on the little
"speaker icon" to adjust the volume of the file, it doesn't let you
adjust the volume.
A workaround to this is to double-click on the email message to open it
up in its own window -- then you can adjust the volume. You could
also, of course, double-click on the attachment and open it up in
QuickTime Player as well.
But it sure would be convenient for us to listen/watch these QuickTime
files within the preview pane. (Particularly now that we're Vonage
subscribers, we get all of our voicemails through Entourage so it would
be nice to quickly listen to all of the voicemail messages within the
preview pane.)
Thanks!

Hi,
My first time on this NG.
Beth Rosengard from the word NG suggested:
"You could probably ask about this on the Entourage newsgroup and get an

My question: I'm getting emails from some commercial & subscription sites
with what I think is called 'malformed HTML rendering'. A long stretch of
the beginning of the email is what I assume to be the written out
programming of the email's HTML, and the rest of the information is in tiny
hard to read and user unfriendly text.
My personal emails come through fine.
Is there a fix for this? I have snail mailed the two organizations I

I haven't heard anything from them yet.

I have a G5 tower, running 10.4.2, with 1.5Gb and a Dual 2Ghz processor, and

Basically, every now and then a message that is received displays only a few

leads to a message saying that there¹s not enough memory to display the
message even though the only other software open is Quark (I¹ve turned off

When this happened on the last Mac, it ended up corrupting some messages
with the Inbox showing a ?New¹ item at all times but you could never find

Entourage and Spotlight.
Dear colleagues:
I am still struggling with Spotlight searches of e-mail messages in
Entourage. I have my inbox separated into different subfolders labeled
according to the source of the e-mail since I subscribe to several different
professional/medical discussion forums on the internet.
It is extremely important for me to be able to search messages in the inbox
according to the subject or certain keywords and this was the very reason I
updated to Tiger. The ability to use Spotlight to easily search and locate
information was the primary reason for my upgrade to the new OS 10.4.
I've been disappointed with the fact that Entourage is the only application
I can't seem to use Spotlight with.
Is there a plug-in released by Microsoft to allow Entourage e-mail messages
to be indexed and searched by Spotlight ? In case there isn't, is there a
third-party solution to solve this issue ?
Thank you in advance for your help.

once liegible are no longer. If I hit reply to the corrupted email then
I can read it clearly. I can't even copy and paste some of the gobbly
text here to show you what it looks like because once I do it reads
clearly.

Attendee Status update
I posted something on this a few days ago but got no replies. I guess I'll
keep trying.
In my earlier post I asked why there was a delay in updating the status on
my calendar of someone who has replied to a meeting request. I want to
revise that. Does anyone know why the attendee status might not be updated
at all? I invite people to meetings, they reply and the attendee status
never changes; it just says "no response" next to the person's name, even
though they have responded.

Repeated database corruption under SP2
I have a large Entourage database (about 4.2 GB), and it keeps getting
corrupted. Yesterday, I formatted the drive (80 GB PowerBook), and did a
clean install of 10.3.9, and Office 2004, SP2. I had upgraded to SP2 prior
to noticing the problem, and since SP2 changes the database structure, going
back to SP1 is not an option. My seemingly intact backup from about 2 weeks
ago is already in the SP2 format.
After restoring from the backup, things are OK for a while, but then the
error messages start ("Could not open that feature. An I/O error occurred."
is a common one). Once I get to this point (last time, this only took about
8 hours), the Database Utility can't save the file; it also reports an I/O
error. (I've only used the advanced rebuild, not the "basic"). I've run
Disk Utility to repair permissions, but this had no effect.
Are there known problems with SP2 and large databases? Any suggestions on
how to move forward? Right now, I'm stuck with a two-week-old backup, and
can't get Entourage to run for a full day without corrupting the DB.

Delay in imap accounts.
Hi
I have several users complaining about their imap acconts.
It looks that imap accounts adds some sort of delay when checking for
new mail.
Whit pop accounts the new mail in the inbox shows upp almost emediatly
, well 2 minute delay or dependening on how often the users checks for
new mail.
Whit imap accounts it can take up to a couple of hours befor new mail
shows upp even when the manualy checks for new mail.
When using web-mail there is no delay at all , the new mail shows up
emediatly.
Is it imap or some setting in entoruage that ads the dealy ?

Unable to send emails to certain addresses
Every time I try and send an email to 3 different email accounts with
different ISPs I get an error message saying that relaying mail to that
account is not allowed the error number is, Error: -17099. Does anybody
know what is going on? Tag: Switching from IMAP to POP Tag: 59500
Separating e-mail from different accounts?
I am new to Entourage, and ran into a problem while setting it up to
retrieve mail from my accounts. I set up 2 separate accounts (within the
same identity), one is a gmail account and the other is the POP account
through my ISP. The setup went flawlessly, and I am receiving mail on both
accounts, but it is all coming into one Inbox!
There must be a way to have separate inboxes for the separate accounts, but
I have scoured the help files and this newsgroup and been unable to figure
it out. I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me, and will cheerfully
accept some good-natured ribbing if it turns out the solution was right
under my nose the whole time. :)

Unable to send email to specific people
Since June 1, 2005, I have been unable to send email to ONE particular
aol.com email address as well as ONE particular yahoo.com address. I
know I have the correct address and I cannot even reply to an email
sent to me by either of these people. I have been in contact with my
ISP at least 6 times and they tell me it is on my side. I have signed
in as root, and the problem is still there. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled Entourage without luck. Other than totally erasing my hard
drive and starting over again, I have no more ideas. Oh, yes, I can
send email from a different computer using my same setup except using
Entourage X instead of Entourage 2004. I am using OSX.3.9 on a G4, with
768 MB of memory and an 80 GB hard drive. I installed Entourage 2004
around the first of April. Suggestions? Tag: Switching from IMAP to POP Tag: 59496

Entourage 2004 sync with Palm OS 5.4
This is a cross post with comp.sys.palmtops.pilot. I'm thinking of
upgrading my handheld which is running Palm OS 4.1, and have several
questions. I understand that new Palm handhelds with Palm OS 5.4 allow
multiple addresses for each contact
(http://www.palm.com/us/software/organizer/), a feature that I find sorely
lacking in Palm OS 4.1. I'd like to know serveral things.
1. Does the conduit that Microsoft includes with Entourage 2004 for OS X
allow for syncing multiple addresses in a contact's entourage record with
the multiple address fields on the Palm. Microsoft is unclear on whether it
will: Compare
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/entourage2004/using.aspx?type=howto&article=/mac/LIBRARY/feature_articles/officex/en_PS4_Diffs.xml,
which says the handheld can only store one address per contact, which is no
longer true, with
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/entourage2004/using.aspx?type=howto&article=/mac/library/feature_articles/officex/en_palmsynchnew.xml,
which suggests that data might be lost, but doesn't specify whether that
includes multiple addresses.
2. If the Entourage conduit won't sync the multiple addresses, is there a
3rd party conduit that will? Missing Sync doesn't seem to do it.
Thanks for any info,
David

simple command keys not working in Entourage
I am finding that even the most basic command shortcuts are not working
in Entourage. I am using 2004 Version 11.2. Command w will not close an
open email. Delete will not delete . . etc. Besides that it is damn
slow. To change from mail to adresses sometimes takes 15 - 30 seconds.
Any suggestions? Tag: Switching from IMAP to POP Tag: 59478
Strange message in Calendar
Hello,
New Entourage user here. I have Entourage 2004 + SP2 installed on a Mac Mini
with the latest Tiger update.
Every time I insert an event in the Calendar, I get the following message:
"Event and computer time zones do not match. In Calendar views, the event
time is adjusted to display correctly.". And the time of the event in the
Calendar view is hour+1, where hour is the hour at which I've set my event.
Any idea how can I solve this problem?
Thanks!

Can you recall mails you didn't want to send?
We previously used Outlook, which had an option that allowed you to
recall a message you had sent, provided that the person on the other
end hadn't opened it yet. Is there anything like this in Entourage?
I've looked through most of their documentation without really finding
anything out. Tag: Switching from IMAP to POP Tag: 59453

Syncing Calendars and Contacts
I was wondering if there is a way to make Entourage function like Now up to
Date and Contact. In NOW there are public categories and every time those
are changes, if you access that category your information is synced. You
have this information on or offline.
I understand that you will have to have exchange but does it function the
same? This way all of this information is always with you and synced to your
mobile device.

LDAP works but get -17709 error
I was able to configure the LDAP server with help from my IT department. It
appears to work just fine, however I keep getting a -17709 error when it
first accesses the LDAP. I dismiss the error and I am able to find names in
the address book. What do I have to do to stop getting this error message.
