Version: v.X
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC
Email Client: pop

Usually I can figure out these error messages through google, etc., but I'm not getting anywhere with this one.

I can receive, but can't send, emails. Get Error: 5530. Also says "5.7.0 Authentication required" and the error say "The SMTP server for "name" does not recognize any of the authentication methods supported by Entourage. To send mail, try disabling SMTP authentication in the account settings or talk to your administrator."

Nothing has changed in my system, but suddenly can't send. Account details match my wife's computer and she CAN send/receive. I've toggled the authentication (with restarts) to try to reset. Restarted Entourage and the computer many times, etc.

Where I think the problem might be is that the last email I sent was photos sent from email button in iPhoto. I've poked around in the menus but can't find what that action might have tripped.

Also, get the same kind of message now from my .mac account.

Any thoughts to cure this are much appreciated.

Thanks

Adding to the above, I've deleted the account and created it again with no luck. I have created the account on my wife's computer and am able to send emails from that account.

So it can't be my administrator, and I'm guessing it can't be the account. Something else in the computer, but what?

Cheers

No answers, but I have the same problem. Entourage will work for
awhile and then just stop with no changes to my system (that I am
aware of) This happened with both 2004 0and now my 2008 professional
version.

First Test your keychain for corruption. (see below)

Create a new Identity in Entourage. Enter your account info there. Set to
leave on server for testing. If it works, then you know it's your database.
If it doesn't work, create a new User in System Preferences and test in a
new Identity there. If it works there, then you know the problem is in your
User's folder.

Send & Receive Basics:

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.

Keychain First Aid:

Run Keychain Access found in /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.

Go to the Keychain Access Menu and drag down to Keychain First Aid.
Enter your login password, click 'Verify' and 'Start'.

You will probably get some items colored red. Click 'Repair' and 'Start'. If
some items are still red, 'Repair' again.

Test to see if the problem is fixed. If not...

1. Go to the system keychain and delete the entry for that account.

2. Go to Entourage, select 'accounts' from the Tools menu, choose the
account that was giving you trouble and click on Edit. Select the 'account
settings' tab.

3. Delete the password from the password box in the POP settings (leaving
the box empty).

4. Close the account window.

5. Re-open the account window and enter your proper password, check the
'save in keychain' check box and close the window again.

Thanks Diane. Still no luck, however.

Got the keychain cleaned up. Have tried new identities in Entourage and in the system with different information and the same information and still won't send. I've poured over and tried your suggestions several times and think I'm following your instructions properly. Soooo.....

Other thoughts? Can it be hardware?

Did you try creating a new User in System Preferences? Is this what you mean
by "in the system?"

Watching the traffic between Entourage and your server might give you some
clues.

Test your network with tcpflow. See directions here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html>

Another application I ran into recently that does the same thing but has a
different interface.

EavesDrop....Let it capture some stuff then double-click any of the lines of
text in the main window to see more detail.

Here's the latest. TCP Flow gave me problems in downloading, so I haven't been able to try that yet.

I do have some new information. It turns out that SBC Global/AT&T have changed servers and security, and apparently many Mac and Entourage users are experiencing problems with this. Problems described exactly as the problems I was having, such as periods of times when emails wouldn't send and building up to a point where they won't send at all. Supposedly you have to update settings and such, but I just spent two hours on a chat line with a very helpful person from AT&T, but ultimately we couldn't cure my particular problem. Now I have to call them and try.

Also, yes, my wife's computer is a Mac running on Office X. Not using Hotmail. The person from AT&T said her system would eventually quit sending emails as well and so I need to update her settings too. First things first, I want to get mine to send.

I'm open to other suggestions in the mean time.

Thanks.

Just read about this on Macworld Weekly newsletter: A Yahoo Mail Bug

* If your POP server and SMTP server names include ³sbcglobal,² substitute
³att² instead. For example, change smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com to
smtp.att.yahoo.com. But don¹t change the ³sbcglobal² term in your e-mail
address (such as steve@sbcglobal.net)?that remains the same.

* Enable SSL for your POP server and select to override the default POP
port with port 995.

* Enable SSL for your SMTP server and select to override the default SMTP
port with port 465.

One of their suggestions was to get a Gmail account.

John,

I was having the same issue a few weeks ago and fixed it by following
the link in the error message. If you can't find the link, go to the
ATT/Yahoo web mail page and click on the options and there is an item on
how to verify other email addresses. I think this may help.

JayMoe or anybody else. Did you every find a fix for this issue?

After installing Entourage (using bellsouth.net) I was able to send email
about 8 times then it just quit. Can't send anymore. Tried everything on this
post and nothing works.

This is frustrating.

What are you doing to determine whether or not the email is actually

I am forwarding it to myself and my wife's email. Once out of every 20 or 30
times I try it will I will receive what I have sent myself or my wife. But
every time I send, it makes the sound like it is sending out and goes in to
my Sent box like its gone out.

Some accounts are funny about how they manage mail sent by you to yourself.
Gmail and Comcast both mess up messages I send to lists. I never see the
mail that I sent. It's still on the server, but they do not forward it on to
me.

You can watch Entourage sending your email using tcpflow. I would also check
your account via your browser to see if you can find your own mail.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html>

Another application I ran into recently that does the same thing but has a

<http://www.baurhome.net/software/eavesdrop/index.html>
======================

In addition....have you checked your Junk Mail folder? Entourage will
consider mail sent by you to be junk unless you create a rule.

This catches the real spam where it appears the mail is from you and not
mail you send yourself. I like the first example. I haven't met a spammer
yet that uses Entourage for a sending client.

Junk Mail where "From is Me"

Today, finally, got the whole problem fixed. Gave up on it for a while and went to gmail just because I was too busy to spend time on it.

In a nutshell it turned out to be the problem with AT&T upgrading and I had to upgrade and change smtp addresses, passwords, etc. Apparently the first time we didn't change the passwords on the modem and airport and that's why we were never successful. The airport gave us the most problems for some reason.

At any rate, finally got. A huge thanks to all who had suggestions. I wish I had suggestions for the other problems brought up.

You need to address each problem in separate threads. Without going back and
researching what your problems where I have no clue what you are referring

In my case it turned out that AT&T upgraded their security systems and it required upgrades to my system. I've had quirky problems all along, but not sure if they're AT&T or not. I've had airport problems plus other things, and so can't definitively say it's AT&T.

I've got it fixed now and it'll be interesting to see how long it goes trouble free.

Thanks Diane and I'll offer more info.

I also send the email to my wifes address with the same issue of sometimes
sending but most of the time not. So sending it do myself evidently is not
creating the problem. Nothing coming in as Junk either.

I guess I'll have to try tcpflow but it will be a new venture for me. Your
directions look very good so I'll give it a try.

However, I've read where a few others reference issues with ATT/Bellsouth as
the source problem and talk about making changes in the settings. But that
would not seem to be a fix for me since the email does in fact go sometimes?

I really like Entourage and I'm suprised either Mac, MS or Bellsouth haven't
offered a positive fix for this.

It kind of sounds like an intermittent server issue. If so, nothing
Microsoft can do to Entourage can fix that problem, since Microsoft
can't control what BellSouth does with their own servers.

I've thought about that and the frustrating thing is, as soon as you mention
Entourage to Bellsouth they instantly use the excuse that they don't trouble
shoot 3rd party software. Even though I've tried to tell them exactly what
you've suggested.

However, I must admit that I don't have and have never had any issue like
this with Mac Mail or Outlook in XP.

Definitely frustrating.

That's because you are talking to brain dead support people.

The best way to figure out what's actually going on behind the scenes is
to use tcpflow to sniff the connection between Entourage and the email
server. Once you have that logged, it's just a matter of reading the log
to figure out what's up.

But that doesn't mean the problem has anything to do with your Mac.

Don't tell them you are using Entourage. :-) If you have another choice for

Well, I intalled tcpflow and tried your command in terminal to test an email
but terminal kept coming back with this msg;

Unhandled transform (1) for ioctl group = 66 (B), number = 121, length = 12
Illegal instruction

What am I doing wrong?

No other choice for an ISP. Believe me, I'd be gone if there were. Here's
another interesting thing. The same issue happens on my Mac loptop. I suppose
that might suggest a problem with Entourage sending through the Bellsouth
server. But I gotta tell ya, it just seems hard to believe that an email
program has an intermittent problem with an ISP server. Very weird to me.

Just paste in this info:

sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -i en0 -c

One thought that you might consider. Set up a Gmail account. You can forward
your BellSouth account to Gmail and download from Gmail. Gmail has great
spam filters.

Yep, tried that and still get the same Illegal instructions error.

It's possible you downloaded installed a pre-compiled binary version of
tcpflow compiled for an architecture that doesn't match your computer's
architecture (PowerPC vs. Intel/x86, for example).

You mentioned in your post that you had to â??upgrade and change smtp

Can you tell me what smtp address you are using (Iâ??m at 25) and the other
â??upgradeâ?? you made?

Most of the time Entourage wonâ??t send my email but sometimes it does and
itâ??s driving me nuts.

I was on the phone with the help desk at AT&T and we tried a lot of things before we found the right formula. The smtp ultimately ended up being mail.sbcglobal.net - it seemed like it was her last resort address.

With the upgrade, they wanted everything in the advanced settings to be clicked and I believe it was using port 465. With this final address, everything was unclicked and we were back to port 25.

We were on the phone for quite a while and literally went through each piece of equipment (modem, airport, and then the Entourage settings) one at a time to get settings straight. I don't think I could have fixed it without the phone call, unfortunately. And that's because I think settings had to be adjusted on their end as well. So from my perspective, it's worth the call.

This is a Mac forum, but these basics should apply.

(don't know what this might be called in
Windows)
