 - Not ONE adequate calendaring program for Macs A little over a year ago, I made the decision to switch from PCs to Macs for my law practice. Everyone liked the the stability the new computers brought. We were way ahead in things like producing chaptered DVDs for trial. (Being able to go to exactly where you want when it comes to video in a trial is wonderful.) Appleworks was okay, Word and Excel were better. There was MYOB or Quicken to handle accounting tasks. Things like Circus Ponies notebook and Omni Outliner proved perfect for organizing information in cases. There was one thing missing: group calendaring. In the PC world, we had had it made. Time and Chaos, for instance, or Agendus. Relatively cheap programs that were true groupware, stable, easy to use. So here we are, with brand-spanking new Macs, and asking the question: how do we schedule various hearings, appointments, etc. for a couple of lawyers plus assorted paralegals and clerks? iCal? Pretty, but it lacks categories (which we use to be able to tell what lawyer has responsibility for what event). No linking to clients, either. Worse, when we tried it, every once in awhile, appointments would just disappear. Plus, Address Book is entirely separate, which doesn't help. Oh, and forget about automating any documents. Fine. There are all of, what... TWO groupware solutions for calendar and contact management. Now Contact / Up to Date and Group Organizer. We tried both. Bought multiple licenses for both. I can't imagine NUTD being used to handle critical data. When it didn't just quit right after making an entry, 75% of the COURT DATES and other important stuff simply disappeared one day three months into using it. Now, that might be a great program for people who really don't throw a lot of critical data at it, but it wasn't great for us. It was a disaster. Group Organizer? Maybe, in some alternate universe, there are beings that can solve the puzzles (i.e. "features") presented by Group Organizer. However, in my office, when we need to sync a Palm or consult a calender, we don't want to start a three-hour session of Myst or some other puzzle-solving game. People hated it. You couldn't sync a Palm without getting duplicates, triplicates, quadruplicates. Time and Chaos? Everyone loved it. It "just worked" (sound familiar?) Agendus for Windows? It just worked with style. Oh, but those don't run on Macs. So what's left? Why, Entourage. I liked Entourage X a lot. In my island universe, where I didn't have to share anything, and didn't care about what anyone else was doing in my office, it was great. Oh, but, unfortunately, I didn't live in that island universe. We are all working on the same projects, or handling different things at the same time, and I needed to know what was going on. Exchange support was long-awaited, and finally came to Entourage X, and then after reading what that really meant, NOT WORTH THE EFFORT was imprinted on my brain in 100-foot high letters. Finally, there was Entourage 2004. With "new and improved" Exchange support. Well... turns out there is some mystery about that. The rep at Microsoft that I spoke to on the phone said it was complete, "just like Outlook." I had already read enough to be sceptical, so I was upgraded to a "grace" technical support call. To be fair, the guy I spoke to was very nice, and seemed more familiar with the product. He said I could download Outlook 2001 for free, and use it to set up something that would allow Exchange Server to display one calendar for everyone, which could be viewed, written to, etc. Assuming this complicated "solution" was indeed accurate, it was not only over my head (an admitted small leap when it comes to Exchange 2003), but the people who installed my network greeted my inquiries with blank stares. I guess it's my fault for (a) not being well-versed in Exchange 2003 as well as OS X, Office 2004 for Mac, and criminal procedure and (b) living in southern Illinois, where Mac experts are a little thin on the ground. But, unless I have misinterpreted everything I have read about Entourage 2004, this program will STILL not give me the functionality I need, and could obtain in my sleep for (God forgive me) Windows XP. Even if I am entirely wrong, and Entourage 2004 will allow all of us to share calendars and contacts, the functionality is STILL inaccessible unless you have access to people who are experts in both Exchange 2003 and Entourage 2004 (and, if the Microsoft guy was to be believed, Outlook 2001 as well). So the utility to "small businesses" of Macs remains a cruel joke until someone produces a stable, easy-to-use program that allows a handful of people in a single organization to reliably manage a shared calendar, shared contacts, and projects. Until then, as much as I hate to say it, Macs should be relegated to the graphics department, and allow PCs to handle the serious work of making the trains run on time. I love my Macs. That's why we switched. I just feel that I -- AND MY BELOVED MACS -- have been let down by software producers who cant' be bothered with writing programs that are worthy of the platform and fulfill the actual needs of real businesses. Simple question: does the Entourage+Exchange combo offer the same features and useability of what is available on the PC? If the answer is "no," how are small businesses supposed to react? Does anyone really think it is okay to provide less usability for Macs because Mac-users are all a bunch of graphic artists who don't live in the real world, or what? So here I am, contemplating exiling my Macs to some sort of graphic-arts ghetto, and bringing in PCs to handle the real work of running a business. That's a shame.  - Duplicate Holiday I having holidays show up as duplicates tens of times. She is showing = about=20 twenty father's day, and fifteen memorial days. Has anyone encountered = this=20 and have a fix.  - Ent 2004 Exchange Setup This has been most frustrating getting exchange to work with Entourage. Here's my setup: OSX 10.3.3 Office 2004 1. Exchange Setup Wizard For outlook windows I simply put my exchange server in - let's call it exchange1, entered my username and everything took just fine. For Entourage - I put my email address first.last@mycompany.com My user name which is first initial last name My domain - let's call it - work And my password Setup wizard bombs. - I would be grateful for any hints or tricks on that one. I did notice on one of Microsoft's pages that they recommend putting in a search domain (I haven't a clue what that might be other than mycompany.com) 2. Next - Tried using my OWA setup. https://mail.mycompany.com/exchange Set the DAV requires SSL since I'm using https Seems to connect, but I have two problems: A. My folder list doesn't come down from the exchange server B. I get a root certificate error. My company sent me the proper root certificate, but it doesn't seem to help. That however can be ignored until later - since I don't have any folders and can't send any messages, secure messages I can take as the next step. When accessing it directly through the web browser, the first screen is login.asp which asks me to enter my "alias" - -which happens to be my user name (first initial last name - but not my e-mail address). I'm wondering if that's unconventional and what might be causing me the problems retrieving my folders. Perhaps within Entourage, I'm really sitting at a login prompt rather than accessing my account.  - Calendar printing Could any 2004 users please describe your 2004 calendar printing experiences? I am an Office X user, and I am currently trying the 2004 test drive. Something I haven't been able to do in X is print a month, week, or day view as they appear on the screen. Printing always resorts to list view and all items rather than just selected events ie: single categories (very annoying). And 2004 test drive doesn't allow printing, so I have no way of knowing if 2004 (full version) will allow me to print calendars with the view of my choice. I would also like to print event details.  - Entourage 2004 Test Drive and error code 3253 I installed Entourage 2004 Test Drive yesterday. All Apple Mail messages, rules, and accounts seemed to import very well. I have 1 imap account and 2 pop accounts. All 3 continue to work well with Mail. Unfortunately, my default pop account does not work with Entourage. Every attempt to get new mail receives this error: Connection to the server failed or was dropped. The error code given is: -3253 I'm using Mac OS 10.2.8.  - Rules in Entourage v.x Mac when Mac is turned off I'm having extreme difficutly getting my out of office/vacation auto-reply rule to work when it's needed the most -- when I'm out of the office or on vacation. For security reasons, we have to log off and turn off our Macs when we're not in the office. How can I get this rule to work when the computer is not on? It works fine when the computer's turned on and i'm signed in to e-mail. Our e-mails don't have Internet access, so that's not an option.  - 4362 (1ghz emac, MSFT Office 2004, 1g ram) I've looked over the other 4362 errors that people have been experiencing. Nearly all the solutions offered were to rebuild the database.... I've done that several times. I've also turned off the MSFT daemon, as well as performed a backup of the entire mail data, all to no avail. Here's what I'm experiencing: 1. I'm using Microsoft Office 2004 Student/Teacher edition 2. The 4362 error occurs when I click on "New: Mail message" or "New: Calendar Task" 3. I've re-installed (just now); still getting the error. Anyone having the problem on 2004? I've had to move to Mozilla Thunderbird (no complaints) for the time being. Thanks -- System specs: 1ghz Emac G4. 1ghz RAM. 60GB hd.  - (2004) Project Maintenance - subject line issue Hi everyone- I've been pretty pleased with the Project Center. Maybe these things aren't really problems, just things I don't understand. In the Properties/maintenance tab one can enter subject lines or part of them to have that mail identified with the project. Questions: 1 Subject line issue: Projects I do often have short "handles" to make subject lines easy. However, the few letters in the "handle" often appear in other words in both mail and newsgroup messages. I tried putting a space first then the letters, then another space, but the spaces were not retained - or were just ignored. Example: one current project is VE. So in the subject box of the maintenance tab in project properties I put [space]VE[space]. When I next looked at the mail list for the project it had not only the relevant e-mail, but every newsgroup message that had a subject word with "ve" in it. For example "move headers" or any word with "ve" anywhere in it. 2) one partial fix would be to make sure no newsgroup messages were allowed to be added to a project. How can I do this? I haven't been able to concoct a successful rule yet. And maybe the Rules don't apply to newsgroup items. This is a partial fix because sometimes I find messages that are relevant to my projects.  - (2004) turn off Entourage notify sound, Keep sound on for e-mail Office 2004 I've looked in preferences for a way to keep the new mail sound on for incoming e-mail while turning off any sounds when reading newsgroups. As it is, whenever I click on one of the newsgroups and the new messages show up, there's the new mail sound. I'd like to reserve the new mail alert for mail actually sent to me personally, rather than for anything new that arrives. I've also looked in Help - they just point to the preferences dialog, where you can only turn the sound on or off for both mail and news.  - LDAP Settings (Entourage 2004) My IT Department gave me the LDAP search terms in the form of a URL. e.g. company.com/City/Department When I set my Search Base to: dc=company,dc=com I get an empty search result when I search with my first name. I've tried a myriad of other combinations cn=people,dc=company,dc=com <- Error -17758 dc=company,dc=com,l=City <- Error -17799 I guess my question are: 1) Can anyone help? 2) Where can I look up the error codes? Calendar items stored in subfolders or anywhere else are not synchronized. To synchronize all your Calendar items, make sure your Outlook Calendar items appear in the top level of your Outlook Calendar folder.¹ OK, armed with this info I went and told our IT administrator, he moved the calendar to the top of the public folders that we have to store company info. Still nothing. He¹s literally moved it to the very top of the list out of any subfolders, it can¹t unsubfolder (if that¹s a word) any further. What I really wanted to happen is that in the calendar mode for it to appear as a separate company calendar you can click on in the left pane instead of importing into your personal calendar. Is this possible? Even though we¹ve moved it to the top level it seems a shame that I can¹t specify a path to a sub-folder for a calendar that the company uses. It worked in Exchange under OS 9, you could see the sub folder inside which the calendar was in and you just clicked on it to view. Entourage must somehow still think the works calendar is sub foldered. Has anyone any more info on this?  - office 2001: Insert Object I would like to take information that is updated regularly from Excel and share that information with my document named "Tony report". So when new info is put into Excel it is should automatically updated in document "Tony report". I know this can be done with the Publish and Subscribe commands, but they do not appear in the menus of Microsoft office 2001 for Mac. Is there a way I can still do this? Thanks!  - Importing data on a new machine Hi, I've been using Office v.X on my G3 Powerbook with Jaguar for quite some time. I just bought a G4 Powerbook with Panther and want to get all my data on the new machine. I hooked my G3 to my G4 with a Firewire cable and transferred alost everything over to the new machine. The only thing I can't seem to get over is my Entourage daya: inbox, drafts, address book & calandar data. Does anyonne know where I could find this info on my old machine so that I can drag it into the proper folder on my new machine? Thanks very much. But when go to that link, we cannot find any backgrounds and signatures. Do you know where we can obtain them? Any help will be highly appreciated.  - Entourage 2004 conduit sync problem with Palm 4.1 My Handspring Treo 600 Smart Phone using the latest Palm software (4.1)=20 appears to be syncing with Entourage 2004 but fails to actually sync my=20 contacts and appointments with my Mac using the Panther operating=20 system. When I sync the phone with the Mac it goes through the routine = and=20 even does a backup but no changes are actually made to the phone records = or the Mac records.  - Duplicate Messages I upgraded to Office 2004 today. My main email address gets duplicate messages every time I down load.  - Spelling Prefs I just installed Office 2004 on my PB 1.25 gh machine. I can see the = spelling=20 boxes in the preferences section and check them. But they do not stick.=20 When I open prefs again they are no longer checked.It will not do any=20 spelling corrections. I have repaired permissions and run nortons. Any thoughts?  - Synchronizing delay - Entourage 2004 I installed Entourage 2004 last week. Since that time, I have been experiencing severe delays in synchronizing my mailboxes. My home computer (using a VPN) connection has never fully downloaded all mail, particularly to my Inbox. In Entourage X, I found that received mail would typically appear in my Inbox within a minute or two. Now, in Entourage 2004, I am experiencing delays of hours or more. Right now, I have received no mail since 9am this morning (twelve hours earlier). I know from my Blackberry that there are over 100 email messages that I have received in the interim. Moreover, I am able to send without much problem. I just sent an email to myself. My Blackberry has it. My Inbox does not. Has anyone experienced this? J.  - Mail Rules in Entourage 2004 Anyone have any idea why my mail rules are not working in 2004. I just upgraded from v.X, and they worked fine.  - Entourage 2004 and Exchange Setup Issues Here's my setup: OSX 10.3.3 Office 2004 1. Exchange Setup Wizard For outlook windows I simply put my exchange server in - let's call it exchange1, entered my username and everything took just fine. For Entourage - I put my email address first.last@mycompany.com My user name which is first initial last name My domain - let's call it - work And my password Setup wizard bombs. - I would be grateful for any hints or tricks on that one. I did notice on one of Microsoft's pages that they recommend putting in a search domain (I haven't a clue what that might be other than mycompany.com) 2. Next - Tried using my OWA setup. https://mail.mycompany.com/exchange Set the DAV requires SSL since I'm using https Seems to connect, but I have two problems: A. My folder list doesn't come down from the exchange server B. I get a root certificate error. My company sent me the proper root certificate, but it doesn't seem to help. That however can be ignored until later - since I don't have any folders and can't send any messages, secure messages I can take as the next step. When accessing it directly through the web browser, the first screen is login.asp which asks me to enter my "alias" - -which happens to be my user name (first initial last name - but not my e-mail address). I'm wondering if that's unconventional and what might be causing me the problems retrieving my folders. Perhaps within Entourage, I'm really sitting at a login prompt rather than accessing my account.  - Entourage 2004 won't recognize Entourage v. X Identity I am trying to upgrade to Office 2004 from Office v. X. Entourage v. X works fine, but when I try to install 2004, neither the installer program nor the Import function will recognize my Entourage v. X identity. It sees my old Entourage 2001 and OE 5 identities, and it recognizes the path to where the v. X identity is, but not the identity itself. I have rebuilt the database, and that doesn't help.  - entourage x connectivity with exchange server Hi, I have exchange server 2k3 on win 2k3. I have our contact addresses in Active Directory. I can access these contacts using outlook 2003 in PC. But I am having trouble to access same address book on Mac OS X using entourage v.x 10.1.4 (in lan environment). I created a new exchange server account in entourage.  - Group triangle can not longer be used to collapse/expand. I am using Entourage 2004 and have the view set to View by Groups (currently categories). It seems that I used to be able to use the triangle by the group name to collapse/expand each group. However, that seems to have stopped working. Instead, clicking the triangle results in all the messages within that group opening in a separate window. Any ideas on how I can revert to having the triangle collapse/expand the groups?  - Can't move Identiy from Jaguar to Panther I have Entourage X on an external drive running Jaguar, and I've tried = to=20 move my Main Identity from it to a fresh copy of Ent. X on my internal=20 drive which is running Panther. I get the message that, "This version of = Entourage cannot open this Identity", but it's precisely the same = version =20 (loaded from my Office X install disc), only the OS is different.  - AT&T Worldnet and Entourage 2004 Upgraded from Office.X to Office.2004. Entourage moved all my Account settings, but I can no longer connect to AT&T Worldnet e-mail account. Everything works fine with Entourage.X but NOT Entourage.2004. I can even access AT&T Worldnet e-mail using Apple's Mail on same computer, but Entourage.2004 will NOT CONNECT! I've double-checked ALL my setting and security, even re-entered my password and made sure it was correct in Keychain, but nothing works! Thoughts? Suggestions?  - Personal Folders from Outlook 2001 for Mac in Entourage 2004 Finally with Entourage 2004, I have been able to read my mail at work = which=20 uses Microsoft Exchange server. Previously, I have had to use Outlook = 2001=20 for Mac (run under Classic) in order to "tie in" with the servers.  - Resource scheduling Folks, Has anyone had any luck with scheduling resources (like meeting rooms, etc.) using Entourage? I know that this requires that the resources accept email messages sent to their mail addresses (instead of some other mechanism that Outlook uses); currently ours here do not but I am trying to work with our IT dept to add this feature.  - Add inbound recipients to address book group Hi, I get a load of junk mail - who doesn't? Most of it is addressed to a load of other people including me. I have established a rule in Entourage (v.X) that deletes messages addressed to people in a group. This works fine but I have to manually add each of these addresses to the group. There doesn't seem to a feature that allows me to add the recipients of a mail that I have received to a group. I realize that I stand the risk of adding my own address to the group but I have set up some fairly strict rules to avoid this. I've had a quick scout around AppleScripts that have been built but none seem to effect inbound recipients.  - Ldap error with Entourage 2004 Hello all. I currently maintain some MAC os x 10.3.3 clients that are trying to use the Entourage 2004 that recently came out. I have everything set up except accessing the GAL properly with LDAP. I receive the following error when trying to do a check names (the current LDAP is pointing to our Exchange Server 2000 SP3 on a Windows 2000 Server SP4). Error ---- The connection to the server failed because the network is unavailable. Make sure that your computer is connected to the network and that your server is working correctly. If you need help, contact your network administrator. Explanation --- LDAP Server Error. Account name: "name of account" Error -3260 ---- If I change the LDAP server to one of our Windows 2000 Domain Controllers, I get almost the same error but get back numbers -17768 or -3170 depending on if I select secure LDAP or basic authentication (port 389).  - Problem with Hotmail folders in entourage Does anyone know if you can prevent Hotmail accounts in entourage 2004=20 from downloading the "Deleted" email folder? In Office X when i set the settings I can choose which folders within = the=20 hotmail account to download, i chose only "inbox", in 2004 it is=20 downloading the deleted folder as well, and there is a ton of crap in = that=20 folder and builds up quickly.  - Invisible Outbox Messages 4 messages that never left Entourage's Outbox are now invisible. A (4) appears after Outbox in the folder list. But there is nothing visible in the folder. Very odd. multiple groups, Entourage randomly picks the groups in which the change
will take place. For example, if I change janedoe@school.edu to
jjdough@school.edu in her contact, and I have janedoe@school.edu as a member
of 8 different groups, her address is only changed to jjdough@school.edu in
a random set of somewhere between 2 and 5 of those groups.

I'm using Office X 10.1.5 in MacOS 10.2.8.

It all depends how you added 'jane' to the groups. If you added her by
dragging the individual contact entry into the group window, the changes to
the individual will propagate through. If you added her by typing the
address in, they won't (because there is no contact associated with that
entry).
