Thanks Barry - just caught up with this news, and glad I did before
innocently buying the upgrade. As a lot of my work is creating macro-driven
templates on a Mac for use on corporate PCs, this decision is a disaster.

Hope I can continue using Office 2004 to do the templates for PCs. Do you
know if VBA for Office 2004 will work on Vista Word?

The change to vista shouldn't affect things, the problem lies in the
differences between VBA in Office 2004 (stuck at v5) and VBA in Office 2003.
Your current macros will continue to work with windows office exactly as
well (or as badly) as they do now.

In all likelihood, VBA will be disappearing from the next windows version of
office as well - it was planned to replace it with dot net in v2007, but the
industry wasn't ready and howled too loud.

Whether or not we get dot net in the next mac version or not we will have to
wait and see.

MS announced last year that VBA would be supported for at least 10 years
in WinOffice.

The installed base of VBA is incredibly huge, so it became an issue that
would kill upgrades.

The base using VBA in MacOffice is far smaller, so it's not worth the
$$, and especially the extra time it would take, to continue to develop
VBA in MacOffice. So we're left with three unpalatable options, IMO: 1)
Stay with Office 2004 and become more and more out of date, 2) Use
Office 2003/7 in Parallels, or 3) switch to AppleScript or other
external applications.

Will the new Entourage be synchronizable with Palm, and will multi-day
appointments work when synchronized with a Palm?

I'm using a Palm Treo 650 smartphone, and multi-day appointments don't
work when synchronized with Entourage though they do work when
synchronized with Outlook. Perhaps I should synchronize Entourage with
Outlook through a Bluetooth connection, and then synchronize the Palm
with Outlook instead?

This is a known issue with the Handheld Synchronization conduit for
Entourage 2004. Are you using Sync Services support (Entourage >
Preferences) to synchronize Entourage data with the Sync Services database
and thus your Palm device? That may fix the problem.

I don't know how you intend to synchronize Entourage with Outlook; it's not
a particularly easy procedure unless you use an Exchange Server.

What do you use to sync?? Do you use The Missing Sync or the default
Palm sync software??
I don't have a Treo myself but I know several people who do. They all
use TMS and none of them complained about their calendar events.

I use Microsofts Entourage sync conduit for Entourage.

I use the sync service to sync with iCal in order to get events
subscribed to.

Which would be to dear.

I used to sync between Entourage and Outlook with my old Palm m130, but
after having moved to Treo 650 the software always warns me of
duplicates. And they /do/ come.

It had been nice to have an Exchange Server alike on my Synology NAT
running Linux to do the synchronization work.

And I now see that it doesn't include a new [and better] conduit for
sync with Entourage 2004 ;-(.

Perhaps Entourage 2008 will give a proper conduit.

MS provides the Conduit. The Synching app does the rest.
You have the choice between the Palm software and The Missing Sync.\I'm
not sure all synching problems are always caused by the conduit itself
since in my case, I have much better results with TMS.

Additionally, TMS offers another way to sync the data.
Entourage 2004 can sync to the System Address book and iCal on Tiger.
With the Missing Sync, you can sync directly through that and completely
bypass the Palm conduit. That's what I currently use with a Clié.

The error is in the Entourage conduit and this conduit isn't replaced:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't mean VBA will be part of new
versions [beyond 2007], does it? Doesn't it mean that Microsoft will give a
degree of legacy support to VBA in Office 2003 and before, for 10 years?

How do you know the error is in the Entourage conduit and not in the
Palm application??
Additionally, as I mentioned in my previous post, if you have Entourage
2004, Tiger and TMS, you can bypass the conduit entirely,

IIRC, they've said that WinOffice versions released during the next
nine-plus years will include VBA.

Of course, XL4 Macro language is still included in XL2007 (nee XL12),
too. It has no documentation, but it's still completely functional and
can be used to create applications.

The announcement was that VBA would remain fully supported for "at least the
next two full product cycles" of Office. Office 2007 is the first of those
cycles.

Unfortunately however, that announcement was made by Steven Sinofsky, who is
no longer responsible for Office as he has moved across to take charge of
Vista, and I have no idea whether his successor feels bound by those
promises. Microsoft has a rather patchy record in that respect.

Weird. As far as I could gather from their site, this is a Palm software
on your device that syncs the date-book through the Entourage ocnduit...
The COnduit is designed for the Palm app. It could simply be that their
software and the conduit are not compatible :-\

Of course, and it's provided by Office.
All I am saying is that the Pimlico date book application might be
incompatible with the format of the data sent by the conduit through the
Palm application.

The data has to go through 3 channels there:
Entourage communicates through its conduit with the Palm sync app.
The Palm Sync app then providess the data to the Pimlico datebook
application on the Palm.
If the data doesn't look right on the Pimlico app, there are 3
possibilities there:
The Entourage conduit messed up
The Palm sync app messed up
Pimlico isn't fully compatible with the data sent.

I personnally have never had this problem using the Palm conduit through
the Missing Sync (not the Palm software) an reading the result on the
default databook software on either Palm or Clié PDAs.
That's why I'm not sure the problem lies with the conduit.

I've had nuymerous problems with the Palm application and they all went
away when I switched to the Missing Sync. The Palm app could be at fault
here.

I've never used Pimlico DateBook and since it isn't a Palm Inc software,
it could still have compatibility issues. That's all I am saying.

Well, I'm not going to pay $25 for a month of an "early access" version
of 2.1 when 2.0 final hasn't even been released yet. AFAIC, it's
vaporware until at least the end of March.

I've used NeoOffice 1.x and I've played with the 2.0 beta. But I think
that their own website puts it best: "NeoOffice is fully functional and
stable enough for everyday use." That's damning oneself by faint praise
at best. None of my paying clients want to hear about NeoOffice, they
don't particularly trust it (the fact that version 1 looks terrible, and
version 2.0 beta looks not a whole lot better doesn't help) and they
sure don't trust it enough to run their macros. And It's much slower on
a Power PC platform.

OTOH, I think it would be wonderful to have a good implementation of
NeoOffice that can read and write VBA. Talk to me after March 27th...
