After my last sync with Missing Sync all of my addresses, tasks,
calendar entries are gone. Pretty sure I had computer set to override
handheld. Are these items gone forever or is there a way to recover
them?

No way to get them out of the database, only chance is to export them from a
backup of your database, then re-import into the current one.

In looking closer I notice that the sync did not wipe out all data - it
synced data that began with the letter A, and also synced groups - it
just wiped out everything else. Is this some sort of bug perhaps?
