This is done by design; when you seen an email with Xs, it simply means
that Entourage has not downloded any of the graphic images, and their
placeholders are marked by these Xs.
This is done to protect you from spam. In many cases, automatically
downloading graphics files sends a small message back to the email's
originator, telling them that the email address was legitimate. This of
course makes that email address more valuable than one that simply goes off
into the ether.
So, Entourage by default does NOT load these automatically. To get them,
simply click the "Download pictures" link at the top of the message.
Bear in mind that if you add a legitimate email address to your Contacts,
you shouldn't have to click on this each time. It really only applies to
new stuff that comes in that isn't recognized by Entourage.
Annoying? Perhaps to some. But I don't find it so at all. It's a small price
to pay for spam control. That way, you download the pix only when you know
it's an email you want to read.
There is hefty debate over whether this function should be more flexible,
i.e., be part of the Preferences. We'll see what Microsoft does with the
next update.
I for one like it and wouldn't use it any other way.
