Can anyone tell me if Entourage 2008 identities are compatible with Entourage 2004 (and vice versa). I have some computers using Office 2004 for Mac and will have some using Office 2008 for Mac and need to switch identities backwards and forwards when travelling etc...

Hi there..

The identity can be used in 2008 but it will be upgraded on using it. =
It is at that point not backward compatible with 2004. It is a one way =
street so make sure if you do this that you make a backup of your 2004 =
identity by copying it to the desktop or some other location. That way =
if something doesn't go right you still have it and you haven't lost =
anything.

I hope this helps..

Shame. We still use a very ancient Microsoft for Mac programme (Works 3) for certain things. It won't run on later Macs which don't run Classic (above 10.3.9) and therefore we can no longer travel with it if we upgrade to Office 2008.... sigh! No solution??

Classic support is no longer included in Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard"; however,
it can still be found in Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger", and that's good news,
actually. Office 2008 requires 10.4.9 or above, meaning that you can run it
on an older Mac that still has Classic support, provided you also install
Tiger on that Mac. You may be able to find cheap copies on eBay now that
Tiger has been replaced by Leopard.

That being said, Microsoft Works is a *very* old application, and now might
be a good moment to consider adopting a more recent application that makes
use of all the modern technologies offered by Mac OS X. Do you think you'll
still be needing Works 3 with Word 2004/2008 available on the same hard
drive?

No! When you install Entourage 2008 it will upgrade your old Identity. This
is not backwards compatible.

Hallo,

I see that there is someone from Entourage's testing team here.

I'm lending a friend a spare Powerbook and we've just encountered a
problem with an Entourage 2004 programme (running on Mac OS X 10.3.5)
that won't read his Entourage 2004 database, which we copied into the
right folder. It's stumped me because I have done this before with
backups of my own database when reinstalling Office etc etc. I've
checked that his database is OK, using the utility tool. It was backed
up as-was on an external drive, as usual. So, why on Earth won't my
Entourage 2004 simply read his database?

Check permissions on the folders. Did you perhaps get this error?

"This Identity Cannot Be Opened With This Version of Entourage"
This message usually means, for example, that Entourage is at 11.0, but the
saved database was saved in Entourage 11.3.3. Since there was a database
format change in there, Entourage 11.0 cannot open a database saved in
Entourage 11.3.3.

Microsoft does not update each application every time an update is released.
See ³Confused over Microsoft Update Version numbers?³ for a handy script
that gives you the Office application¹s version info.

Agree (of course). I had this problem when my iBook hard disk died. The iBook was in 'hospital' for a couple of weeks. Updates on Entourage between times on the iMac made my iBook incapable of reading the indentity when it came back from repairs. It took me quite a while (and not inconsiderable stress) before I realised what the problem was.
