I have moved to a new computer (Mac G4) and need to transfer all my
data from Entourage X to Entourage X. The import function does not
recognize E-X, only the 2001 version. How do I do this? I know there
has to be a way to save ALL my email, rules, folders, etc. Has anyone
run into this? And how do I solve it?

Thanks for any advice on this.

The system:
Mac B&W G4/400 / OS 10.3.2 (Panther)

You don't need to import; simply copy over your Microsoft User Data folder
from the old computer to the new one.

As you have discovered you cannot import from the same version. You can
however, move over the files since they are already updated for use with
Entourage X.

First you need to understand where your data is stored. The Microsoft User
Data folder contains your identity (all data is stored here) as well as
scripts etc. the MUD folder is located in your User's Document folder.

If you have not started using Entourage on the new computer just drag over
the entire Microsoft User Data folder to your User's Document folder.

If you are already using Entourage X on the new computer, rename your old
Identity (named Main by default) to the Office X Identities folder. Use
Switch Identities to select your old identity.

To combine any new mail with the old, drag the folder and subfolders to the
desktop. This will create an MBOX file. Switch to your old identity and drag
the MBOX file into the folder window of Entourage. Voila! You'll need to
drag messages to combine.

Tip: A custom view might be easier than doing all folders and subfolder for
the new mail.

I tried that initially. Didn't work. The program wouldn't even open
up. It gives me an error message saying it cannot open without the
original installed files. Or something very close to that. I tried
moving over the Microsoft User Data and I tried just moving the files
within the folders. No dice. I know that's supposed to work, but it's
not for me. I'm wondering if I shouldn't move the MUD over before I
install E on the new machine. Whattaya think?

Just a guess: this may be a permissions problem. If you don't use the same
Mac OS X user's identity, it may well be you don't have the permission to
open the files. So you should check the permissions (using the "Get info..."
option in the Finder's "File" Menu) and change them if needed.

If this doesn't help, could you be more precise about the denial message you
get, it may be quite helpful.

If the Entourage will not even open, you need to solve that first. Do any of
the Office applications open?

The next step would be to create a new User in System Preferences and try to
open Entourage there. If it opens, then you have problems in the other User
folder. If Entourage does not open with a blank identity now, you have other
problems.

One option would be to use "Remove Office" then install from the CD and
update.

"Remove Office" is located in the Value Pack folder on the Office X CD.
You'll need your CD key when you install.

You need three updaters:

Office 10.1.2
Office 10.1.4
Office 10.1.5

Let us know how this goes.

You can move over prior, but I don't think this is your problem. Do you have
two document folders?

It's always best to name the identity the same as the old computer when you
are moving over files.
