Entourage 2004 forcibly moves any incoming mail (or, worse yet, mail from a
pre-existing mailbox which is being cached on my Mac for the first time) to
the local Inbox (under "Folders on My Computer"). This essentially defeats
the purpose of IMAP (having server-resident folders) and requires me to
manually drag message from my local inbox into the appropriate folder(s) on
my IMAP servers.

I cannot find a setting anywhere to change this behavior, either in
Preferences or in editing the account settings. BTW, I'm using my .Mac IMAP
account and did not notice this behavior with Entourage X.

It sounds as if you either accidentally set up your .Mac account as POP
instead of IMAP when you moved to 2004 (check in Tools/Accounts), or , more
likely there are some IMAP Rules which are moving messages to your local
Inbox. Check Tools/Accounts/Rules (IMAP). This can easily happen when you
imported everything from Entourage X: the IMAP account did not yet fully
exist (hadn't yet done its first online check) during import, so the IMAP
folders, including the IMAP INBOX, for rules were not yet discoverable. In
these circumstances, the rule will default to the default folder, which is
the local Inbox. In addition to rules, also check
Tools/Account/.Mac/Advanced, and make sure that the various Sent Items,
Drafts, and Deleted Items folders (if used) are set to the correct IMAP
folders. And also check Tools/Mailing List Manager for any mailing lists you
may have: they too will be defaulting to the local Inbox.

Nope, it's properly configured as IMAP.

I do not see any rules (under any account, and definitely not under IMAP).
Is there some place where this can be 'hiding'?
