After upgrading to 10.3 in mid-November, my wife and I started using
Entourage with Fast User Switching enabled.

After 2 days, we both received error -192 from Entourage, so I searched this
forum and found a similar report and a recommendation to make sure the
10.1.5 Entourage update had been applied.

I checked and found we were on 10.1.4, so I applied 10.1.5. Also, I
performed a regular rebuild of both Entourage databases (for each user - my
wife's and mine).

The error still occurred after a few days, so I performed an advanced
rebuild on both databases. My wife just alerted me to an error - she doesn¹t
remember if -192 was the exact error, but by the time I looked into it, the
exact same behavior was present (i.e. Can not Quit Entourage, must do a
'Force Quit' using Activity Monitor; mouse-over of any of the 6 action panes
(Mail, Address Book, calendar, Notes, Tasks, Custom) changes the icon to a
grid with no icon).

Any help or insight will be greatly appreciated!!! Don't know if Fast User
Switching has anything to do with it, but thought it should be mentioned.

Did you quit Notifications before running rebuild?

Also check your Startup Items folder and be sure there is only one Microsoft
Database daemon listed. If there is more than one, delete all. Entourage
will create a new one.

Did your error mention script?

Error -192

"The script could not be run. An error has occurred(-192)"
This was fixed in the update Office 10.1.2

The -192 error is a problem with a file's resource fork, and so could apply
in more than one scenario. Where scripts are involved this is usually
because they're trying to run one of Jaguar's data fork scripts in a pre-SR1
Entourage.

I also suggest doing Repair Permissions:

To use Repair Permissions:

* Open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utility folder.

* Click on the First Aid tab and select Repair Permissions

* Click on the icon for your boot volume.

* Click the repair permissions button.

Don't run from CD as updates have a newer version of Repair Permissions.

Run Repair Permissions from the volume being repaired.

having the same problem.

upgraded to osx panther, upgraded to office 10.1.5 (using entourage
exclusively), multiple mac user accounts, get the error message -192
(or a combination of those numbers), icons go bad, have to force quit
and relaunch, seems to be happening weekly.

hope this gets resolved soon.

No! I just re-built both databases after turning off Notifications - thanks!
(BTW, the need to turn off notifications should be mentioned clearly before
committing to the rebuild.)

Both my wife and I have Microsoft Database Daemon in our Startup Items
folder, but only one occurrence in each. Are you suggesting I delete either
or both of them? Let me know your recommendation...

I fired up Entourage for both users and used Activity Monitor to view All
Processes prior to the rebuild and after.

It seems that the Microsoft Database Daemon process is named just 'Database
Daemon' when you're viewing your own process, but it is 'Microsoft Database
Daemon' when you view the _other_ user's process from your own session. Same
thing for the Entourage process ('Entourage' only if viewing your processes;
Microsoft Entourage when you view the other user's processes from your
session). At first I thought this might be relevant; now I doubt it.

I didn't see the last error message (my wife had already moved on and didn't
remember exactly). The exact syntax of the message that I _have_ seen
doesn't mention scripts, just 'An error has occurred (-192)'. It hasn't
happened since yesterday, but I will report again if/when it does.

Good suggestion - I do it regularly, and just did it again. It came up
clean.

Thanks for your quick reply! Let me know what else I can do to help
troubleshoot this. Then again, the rebuild (notifications OFF) _may_ have
done the trick. Time will tell...

It's an assumption that users know Notifications is an Office application.
It's a bad one as far as I'm concerned. If enough people report this problem
maybe it will get changed.

In Entourage X, go to Help -> Send Feedback on Entourage.

For any
version, you can go to this URL to send Mac Product Feedback:

<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/feedback/suggestion.asp>

This should be ok. I've not heard of it being a problem with fast user
switching. You could test this by actually logging out instead of use fast
user switching.

Errors numbers can often have different text descriptions, but generally the
fix is the same. I wish it was more of an exact science, but it's not so we
just do the best we can.
>>

Since you are both having the problem, I would first check by not using fast
user and log out/in.

Next step would be to create a new user and just add one account to it for
testing. If it works then it's something in both of your User folders. This
could be in either the Microsoft User Data folder, preferences that are
corrupt or a third party application. You'll need to test all of these.

Next thought is it is something at the system level. We'll go down that road
if we have to. :-)

To the error -192 thread
Just reviewed your thread regarding this error message- I have been
having the same problem since upgrading to Panther. Periodically (it seems
to be occurring if I also have Safari open) I will get the box with error
-192 and essentially a frozen entourage- in addition I can move the mouse
over the left sided icons for address book etc. And they will blank out.
I have already been upgraded to the latest Office release (although it
leaves the Entourage and Word version at 10.1.4 and the PowerPoint and Excel
at 10.1.5.

This occurs despite having rebuilt the database, redoing permissions and
even last week using Disk Warrior (which did speed up the office
applications).

Any other ideas?

Great suggestion - I sent the feedback to Microsoft.

After doing a rebuild with notifications OFF for both users' databases ~8
days ago, my wife experienced the same problem ~6 days ago, _however_ with
one twist. She said that she got an error message window, but it was empty
except for a blue 'OK' button. She moved the mouse over the six icons in the
upper left, and the icon would change to a grid as soon as she moved the
cursor over it. The application froze and she could do nothing, so she did a
Force Quit and resumed Entourage.

I experienced the same problem today - the exact same symptoms as the
previous -192 error, but this time a blank error window with an 'OK' button
was displayed. I did a Force Quit and immediately resumed using Entourage.

My wife was also logged on under her username and had Entourage running at
the time of my application freeze. Don't know if that was coincidence, but
will track and report this if/when it happens again.

Here is the rub - my wife and I _need_ to use Fast User Switching and be
able to leave Entourage windows open to improve our productivity at home!

I will try to log out whenever I can, but I am not going to ask my wife to
do the same! ;-)

Again, I will try to log out whenever possible and see if my wife has the
problem even if I am logged out.

Ouch. Well, I will wait a week or two and see if logging out has a good
effect before I try setting up and using a new user.

>> Next thought is it is something at the system level. We'll go down that road

My intuition is that is where the problem resides. Regardless, I will report
whatever happens going down other paths.

BTW, I had clicked on a url in an Inbox email, then visited that webpage
using IE just _before_ the freeze happened. The freeze started and the blank
window was displayed as I tried to move the _next_ Inbox message into a
folder.
