I am having problems sending e-mails using Entourage, even though I can
receive them just fine. My ISP at home is verizon online, and I am
currently using SBC Global as the local ISP where I am travelling. I
also have problems using T-Mobile hotspots as well. I either get a
"Entourage is unable to authenticate" error message or a Timeout
message when sending. My settings are:

Operating system: Mac OS X.3 with all updates installed

Program: Entourage 2004 with updates installed

Home ISP: Verizon Online

Incoming server: incoming.verizon.net (requires authentication, box is
checked in account settings)

Outgoing server: outgoing.verizon.net.

Any suggestions would be welcome. The Verizon Online support team has
been of no help. T-Mobile was not better. I don't want to spend hours
on hold with M$ if I can avoid it.
Thanks for any help.

This does not sound like an Entourage problem. Can you send with *any*
mail program? If so, do with Entourage whatever you are doing in that
other mail program. I suspect that you have simply failed to tell
Entourage to authenticate when sending (you can be sure that
outgoing.verizon.net is not going to relay anonymously sent email). m.

That's probably a limitation of your ISP. Most ISPs refuse to let you
send e-mail on their SMTP servers unless you are connected through their
domain (or unless you authenticate properly).

One option is to use the SMTP server of the ISP you are connecting
through.
The other option (prividing your ISP doesn't block port 25 - which they
usually don;t) would be to enable Postfix on your Mac and then use your
own Mac as your SMTP server (use 127.0.0.1 as the SMTP server address).
Take a look there for more info about Postfix:
