I have Entourage X, Service Release 1, 10.1.6. It is crashing
continuously. I get an error -192 box and have to force quit it. I did
a typical rebuild but to no avail. I also ran the first aid on
preferences. Still crashing. What do I do?

Same here. I've been scouring the net for an answer (and only came up
with this question). I thought I'd add some details that might relate
(don't know if the same details apply for miketod). I've been running
Office v.X for years. I recently (4-6 weeks) bought a MacBook and have
continued to run v.X, including Entourage, with no problems--until a
couple days ago. Now I can scarcely use Entourage for more than two
minutes without encountering error -192 (no explanation or
information) and cannot do anything else with Entourage until I force
quit and reopen. It might be a coincidence, but this problem cropped
up days after (not immediately after) I downloaded the latest OS
update (Mac OS X Update [Intel]) from Apple. (Downloaded 3.18, noticed
problem 3.22; definitely used Entourage in between)

Unlike miketod I haven't tried any fixes.

Entourage is basically unusable; help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Matt

Error -192

The script could not run. End of file was reached.

or

The script could not be run. An error has occurred(-192)

This was fixed in the update Office 10.1.2

The -192 error is a problem with a file's resource fork, and so could apply
in more than one scenario. Where scripts are involved this is usually
because they're trying to run one of Jaguar's data fork scripts in a pre-SR1
Entourage.

Obviously, you've updated Entourage so I have no clue as to why you are
getting this error.

It's possible the error is tied to a recent OS update. Run the Apple combo
updater.

I was already running 10.4.9, but ran the recommended combo anyway
(used the provided link; thank you and downloaded this 308 MB combo,
then installed and restarted). This has not solved the problem.

Wow. You're fast. I came back to post again and you've already
answered. I'm impressed. Thank you.

I was back to say that maybe the former solution did work. Since I
last posted, I thought I'd shutdown (rather than just restart, which
the installation did for me) and then turn the machine on again when
the memory had a chance to clear. I've been running Entourage through
paces I don't think it could have done earlier without reporducing the
problem. If it crops up again, I will certainly try setting up a new
user. Thanks so much for your help!

Matt

Thanks for the feedback. Often several suggestions are offered and it's
helpful to know what worked. This way we know what to suggest for other

You are very welcome for the feedback, and thanks again for all the
help. As it turned out, the update did nto get rid of the problem,
though it seemed better. So I set up a new user and decided it was
likely a problem in my user account. So I followed the link you
provided for that. I performed several of the ideas there, skipped the
safe boot because it didn't seem to offer anything diagnostic, or
rather, didn't tell me what to do if the safe boot "fixed" the
problem. So I rebuilt the database, which didn't help, so I did an
Advanced Rebuild, which seems to have finally accomplished the fix.

Thanks for all your time and trouble!

Matt

I'll try to add more on the Safe Boot. Refining the steps to troubleshoot is
an ongoing project as new and unusual things are always developing.

I can add to error -192 that an advanced rebuild might help.

Database corruption can show in really weird ways. Many people use the
rebuild on a regular basis, but that's not recommended. Even though it can
fix problems it can also fail and make your data unusable so I only advise
to rebuild when I feel it's warranted.

Disk fragmentation wouldn't be a hardware problem per se would it?
That is, it wouldn't be the hard drive's fault, but the organization
of the data, a directory problem (?)

I'm a big fan of Disk Warrior. It bailed me out once. My new,
Universal version is on the way.

Not in the strictest sense, but it does involve your drive and indicates a
different strategy to troubleshoot than normal application fixes.

Check out iDefrag. They have a demo.

<http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iDefrag-2.php>

Your old copy of DW should be able to view your drive for fragmentation even
if it can't repair it.

In the meantime, you should be able to check how full your drive is using
the Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder. Before you say, it's a new
computer how could this be a problem...well, it can and has.

OK, there has been some advice offered that I don't really understand,
so I haven't tried everything, but here's some interesting data:

Today I tried moving the Microsoft User Data folder to a new user's
Documents folder to test the database in a new user. I followed the
steps from one of the links above. When I did this, the new user
cannot even open Entourage!

Some background detail on what I'm experiencing with Entourage in my
old user: Entourage functions perfectly fine EXCEPT that every once in
a while (say every third to twelfth time) when I click on a message
(in any folder) I get that error -192 and have to force quit. As soon
as I do, I can open it back up and do anything I want. I haven't had
any trouble receiving or sending, just viewing proves to be a frequent
intermittent problem. However,

In the new user, when I double click on Entourage's icon, I get a
window that says "Entourage cannot access your data. To attempt to fix
the problem, rebuild your database." OK is the only choice.

Next I get "Are you sure you want to rebuild...?" and a choice between
typical and advanced. Choosing "typical", I click "Rebuild".

Next is "Compacting faild. Access permission is denied." OK is the
only option.

Next is "Typical rebuild failed, would you like to try an Advanced
Rebuild?" I choose "Yes"

Next is "Rebuilding failed. Access permission is denied." OK is the
only option.

Next is "Rebuilding failed. It is likely that your database cannot be
repaired." OK is the only option (even though it's not OK) :-)

Now, if I move the MUD back to my old user, everything is just as it
was: perfectly functional if I don't let a force quit every few
minutes bother me.

Regards,

Matt

It could be a permissions error. In your new User let Entourage create a new
Microsoft User Data folder.

Don't bring over the entire MUD folder from shared.
Rename the default Identity so you can add your current problem Identity
from Shared.
Compare permissions on the new Identity folder that's created.

If they are the same then permissions are ruled out.

Looking at your problem further, it sounds like database corruption. Use the
Export as Entourage archive under File --> Export. Does this fail? Corrupted
data will cause the export to fail.

Let me know what you find.

Please forgive my ignorance...

I think you're instructing me to let Entourage create a new identity
(which it will do in the absence of one), then rename it (anything but
"Main Identity" so that I can bring in the old one from shared (after
having renamed the new one) and have two identities in the same User.

If I'm wrong about that then I really am confused. Next I'm to compare
the permissions of the old "Main Identity" and the new "Something
Else" to see if they're the same. I have no idea HOW to compare these.

Note: I did get my new copy of DW and ran it. In the past, DW did
absolutely nothing but repair a disk's directory (still its main
function) but the new one had a function to repair disk permissions. I
ran that. Maybe disk permissions and Entourage Database permissions
are not the same thing (?)

For now, I'm using Apple's Mail, which has some features I like a lot,
but I miss Word as my editor.

Regards,

Matt

I cannot attempt the Export thing because now, even when I bring the
Main Identity back to my old user, I cannot open Entourage (see
above). In addition to the above, if I say "Cancel" right away to the
question of which type of rebuild I want to attempt, I get this:

You do not have write access to the Entourage application folder. To
run Entourage you must have the adminstrative user remove the
Identities folder form the application folder. For more information,
see the Entourage Read Me file. ....OK

I checked the Read Me file briefly; I didn't see anything helpful. I
cant find an Identities folder anywhere except in the MUD file. Both
users have the right to administrate.

Matt

Oh, this is fun...I can handle problems with Entourage, but if I
develop problems with Word I'm going to have a heart attack.

Deciding to be done with this problem for today and get some work
done, I opened Word and got this message:

An unexpected error occured while trying to load the Microsoft
Framework X library.

I don't know what this means, but error messages from Word always give
me a tight feeling in my chest.

I moved the Main Identities folder to the Shared User folder and
reopened Word (it did open before when I clicked OK on the error
message). This time it seemed to open normally.

Regards,

Matt

Yes, you are correct. You can have multiple Identities in your Office 2004
Identities folder. If you add one with the same name it will overwrite the
original. This is typical Finder behavior.

Do a Get Info. Here are my database permissions: Note if your Owner is
incorrect, you¹ll need to click on the lock icon to change.

I would think that DW running permissions is the same as running Repair
Permissions from the Disk Utility. If you have upgraded which you have you
are not running against the correct permissions. Don't run from CD. Updates
contain a newer versions of the application's permissions.

See Mac 101 for more on Repair Permissions:

Option 1) If you receive a framework error, re-apply recent updates. A
framework error normally means one or more components of Office have not
been updated correctly and are now out of synch with other bits.

Option 2) The "Framework error" is basically a (generic) message indicating
the application can't connect to the Database or to the expected information
inside the Database. The reasons may differ and so may the methods to solve
it.

Option 3) See this fix:
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/text.html#error_framework>

Some users have resorted to deleting the MUD folder, but before you do that
try some other methods (repairing permissions, rebuilding the Database,...)
before you take a drastic action like deleting the MUD folder.

In summary, it might be easier for you to use "Remove Office" then
re-install from the CD then Update. Move your Identity folder to anther
location. Save any important info that you might have in the MUD folder.
Delete the MUD folder and let Entourage create a new one. Move your old
Identity back into the Identities folder. (verify that all permissions are
set correctly by comparing them to the default).

Let me know how this works.
