Entourage 2004 "cannot retrieve delegation settings" error message

If I follow instructions for adding a delegate, I always get a message
stating "cannot retrieve delegation settings" after I find and select
a user to specify as delegate. So the Delegate Permissions window
never gets populated. When I click Select while using the Select User
dialog, I can see the Microsoft Messaging Library.bundle app become
visible in the Dock, then disappear with a crash notice. Is there any
way to fix that?

I have Mac OS X 10.5.2 running on a MacBook Pro 17" Core Duo 2.16GHz.

I've never seen the issue you're describing but the fact that you're
seeing something launch and quit isn't good.

I suggest applying the latest Mac OS X combo update available and making
sure you have Entourage fully patched as well.

As an alternative, you could also log in to your account using Outlook
for Windows and set your delegates there.

I've already tried all of your suggestions except using Outlook for
Windows. That's just too depressing. I've even completely removed
office as well as the Microsoft Office 2004 identities from Documents
and reinstalled, updating all the way through 11.4.0. I've even tried
on a 10.4.11 system. I did note that the error message changed from
"cannot retrieve delegation settings" to an authentication error
message if I specified one of the other Exchange servers in my domain.
Is there a chance that the Exchange server configuration at my
location is causing the problem? (I guess that's a little like asking
if taking a bath might be causing me to get wet.) Thanks.

Wish I could tell you more but if you're dealing with more than one
domain then the problem gets complex. If you're getting an
authentication error then you're at least hitting the right server.

I'm not sure what would happen if your user account were in one domain
and Exchange in the other. Any authentication may need to have you
prefix your user name with "DOMAIN\" as in "DOMAIN\username".
