Now that Entourage 2008 is released can someone tell me if it still adds
automatic LF's (line feeds) after 72 characters.

This is my only real objection to Entourage 2004 and may determine if I
upgrade to 2008 or have to change to another program.

I posted the above on 17-Jan and did not receive a response. I would
really like to know if Microsoft listened and ditched the auto LF for
Plain Text messages.

The reason is my Entourage plain text email message sent to various
Yahoo groups show up as broken text due to LF's.

I do not have access to Entourage 2008 and would appreciate note from
someone if this issue has been corrected.

I have a memory of replying to your message, but it appears to have
vanished into the nether. Perhaps I replied to someone else on another
forum.

Yes, Entourage still wraps plain text messages, as it is encouraged to do by
Internet standards (RFC 2822, 2.1.1). All email clients do this, although
some allow you to turn it off on a case-by-case basis. Entourage does not,
unless you use HTML.

I can't imagine why. The recommendation is 78 characters - if Entourage is
doing 72 (to allow for multiple levels of quoting), that would cause less
problems - not more.

Thank you for responding. I wish it was better news. Looks like I may
have to consider changing to Apple's Mail that sends plain text without
adding its own LF's (or whatever) after 72 characters. Entourage really
trashes messages sent to the various Yahoo groups. I even tried using
HTML. It was better but Entourage still adds some LF's

I just did a quick read of the RFC 2822, 2.1.1 and I don't think
Entourage is compliant. The RFC says ".....Each line of characters MUST
be no more than 998 characters, and SHOULD be no more than 78
characters, excluding the CRLF."

For plain text messages, I let Entourage wrap the text and no line is
ever more than 78 characters and I manually add a return to start each
new paragraph. This works in Apple Mail but Entourage seems to add
something like a LF after 78 characters and must ignore paragraph
returns.

Users that only deal with other Microsoft Entourage users will not see
the problem.

No need to respond. I will have to live with the trashy format or
change to another mail application.

Just so you know, Microsoft's MacBU keeps promising to add "format=flowed"
to Entourage (which, basically, is unwrapped text without automatic line
endings), something many other mail clients have. The item keeps getting
bumped by things Microsoft considers higher priority (more people asking for
it). Some users (but apparently not enough of us) have been clamoring for
this addition for years, and it is definitely on MacBU's radar...so
possibly, if you and whoever else who reads this and wants this capability
would use the Help menu's "Send feedback" option to request it directly from
Microsoft, we might generate enough noise to raise its priority.

Thanks for the note and a good definition of what I need. I did send
feedback to MS while 2008 was in early development. Sending it was a
waste of my time and effort. It was not acked is not in 2008.

I found a poor workaround. I use HTML and have to add my on
returns.

This reminds me of the Mac Plus days dealing with CR's and LFs to
communicate with 386 PC's

Do it again. I just posted a blog article asking everyone that wants this
feature to send feedback. Maybe if we get a good response it will help get
this item moved to the top of the list.
