Hi, <br>
I have Entourage 2004, 11.3.6, OS 10.4.11. I have not changed anything on my computer but suddenly Entourage has begun to regularly 'hang'. I'll tell it to check messages and it just spins supposedly checking until I have to force quit. When I hit Apple+Alt+Esc, it says 'Entourage not Responding' next to Entourage. If I quit and restart the program it's fine... until it happens again. I've had a couple weird things happen on my Firefox 2.0.0.11 too (starting around the same time). Could I have picked up a bug? I have restarted the computer, I have cleared my browser cache, and I tried to use the Disk Utility to 'fix' the weirdness but 'repair disk' does not come up as an option. <br><br>Please Help!

Probably not.

Check Startup Items in System Preferences to see if you have multiple
Microsoft Database daemons. If you do, delete all and let Entourage create a
new one when launched.

You can't Repair the disk you are booted from. You can and should run Repair
Permissions from the startup disk, but you can't repair a drive that's the
boot drive.

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying?no need to roll back or do a clean install.

To Sam: <br>
You can find information about the problem you are having on the Entourage Help Pages. Look under the "Error Page" link and search for the error number you give, -3259. <br><br>If that does not help, please post your question as a new post, rather than a reply to a question that has nothing to do with your problem. To Karen: No, you are not "stuck with this problem." The people like me or Diane who respond to questions here are users like you. We have other occupations; this isn't our job. On starting up my mac pro this morning, Entourage failed to start up, stalling at the product license panel that pops up just before launching the application fully. I found the same problem occurs with all the other applications in Office X (Word, Powerpoint and Excel). I uninstalled and re-loaded Office X and the fault continues. I upgraded to Leopard when it was launched so do not think this is the problem.<br>
Does anybody have an idea what could be causing the problem and, this is my main concern, will Time Machine have saved details of all my contacts and recent emails in Entourage as i have some important emails that I need to recover

Try testing in a new User. Go to System Preferences and create a new User.
Try testing Office there. This will tell you if it¹s a system wide or User
folder problem.

Did you try the combo updater? See this page for other solutions to
crashing:

There seems to be a problem with links getting inserted using the interface.
I highly suggest using any newsreader to send in your messages rather than
use the web interface. Entourage has a newsreader that¹s easy to set up.

How to subscribe to the Microsoft Entourage newsgroup

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/support_options/subnews.html>

You¹ll find the error page here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/page.html#error-3259>

However, error solutions are not always exact. Did you follow the steps here
to set up your .Mac account? You might be happier with POP rather then IMAP
if you don;t have multiple computers.

I was not being impatient, I know that this is not your job, and I know that this is not a direct line to Microsoft. I usually enjoy and appreciate my interaction with MVPs and the invaluable assistance they offer. I only re-emailed because, in the past, when I have posted a problem, the responses were very rapid; on this occasion, because of the lag time, I feared I was experiencing an unsolvable problem.<br>

I'll chime in here -- two Entourage 2004 issues have cropped up in recent weeks.

This is showing up after (currently-patched) Entourage 2004 freezes and needs to be force-quit via Finder. I'm running 10.5.2.....and Google seems to be less-than forthcoming with any assistance. Any ideas from those wiser than I?

Entourage crashed overnight, and this is what I saw in my system.log this morning:

pr 11 03:57:49 flint [0x0-0x12e12e].com.microsoft.Entourage[1711]: terminate called after throwing an instance of 'Security::CssmError
Apr 11 03:57:49 flint [0x0-0x12e12e].com.microsoft.Entourage[1711]: '
Apr 11 03:57:49 flint [0x0-0x12e12e].com.microsoft.Entourage[1711]: what(): CSSM exception
Apr 11 05:00:01 flint mDNSResponder[21]: SetupAddr invalid sa_family 0
Apr 11 05:00:31: --- last message repeated 1 time ---

...also, perhaps related, but perhaps not, when Entourage hangs (with growing frequency) I see this i HangReporter logging:

Date/Time: 2008-04-11 10:10:11 -0400
OS Version: 10.5.2 (Build 9C31)
Architecture: i386
Report Version: 4

Command: Microsoft Entourage
Path: /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Microsoft Entourage
Rosetta: Yes
Version: ??? (???)
Parent: launchd [122]

PID: 1711
Event: hang
Time: 8.09s
Steps: 44

....is this a problem with 10.5.2 and Entourage 2004, and should I just say **** it, update to 2008?

Thx in advance. I am stumped on this one!

Can you choose "Switch Identity" from the Entourage menu?

This is similar to a setting you select when you log into your computer. You
can have it ask you for "what user" or have it automatically log in as a
specific user. Same for Entourage. Select "Switch Identity" under Entourage
in the Menu bar, there is a check box at the bottom to have this window show
up when launching.

First of all, you have already done one thing, check to to see what operating system you have. You're OK there. Next, for Firefox, you may want to try and contact Mozilla about Firefox. They might be able to help you there. If you have already updated your 2004 Office to the present update that's out there, try the following:
1. First, check to see how much memory your Mac currently has. Check this by going under the Apple at the top left of your screen. Highlight "About This Mac."
2. You may also want to check to see how much memory you have left on your hard drive. Go to the Finder, high light your hard drive, click File and scroll down to "Get Info."
3. As long as none of your other 2004 applications are acting up, try either using Mac Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc. or try upgrading to Office 2008. I had to do this because mine was malfunctioning so many times that it was nerve-racking. Even though it may cost money, you will find Office 2008 has a lot more to offer than you can imagine.
