I've read and reread the deleting instruction in the forum and can't delete
the messages that get down loaded into Entourage when I click into the
microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage and I follow the instruction from the
help pages. I want to reduce the size my Entourage data file. I have
messages (many more than 300 from the first time I logged in)

"3) How do I empty the cache on my newsgroup? I need to reduce the size of
my database.

Control-click the icon of the news server (e.g. Microsoft News Server) in
the Folder List at the left, and select Empty Cache from the contextual menu
that pops up. That deletes all the downloaded news messages from every news
group of that server, all in on go.

If you want copies of some messages preserved, drag a copy to a regular
Entourage folder before you empty the cache. Otherwise, if the message is
gone from the server, it will be permanently deleted."

I do not get the contextual menu discussed above.

I have tried this as well, and the only items that show up in the contextual
menu when I Control-click on the Microsoft News Server are: Help; Open...;
Edit Account; Receive Complete Newsgroup List; Get New Newsgroups -- there
is no option for Empty Cache. I'd also like to remove most of the messages
from this newsgroup. How do I do it?

Delete Cache seems to have been another casualty of the transition to
Entourage 2008.

I believe that caches are not deleted with rebuilding the database so it
appears there is no way to get rid of message cache.

The actual Newsgroup messages are stored on the server so you can't delete
them.

As soon as I hear back with more details on this I will post back.

I will look forward to hearing if there is a solution to this issue.

I realize that I really can't delete the messages from the server but I have
to assume that the content does get downloaded onto my hard drive and is
taking up space in addition to increasing my Entourage file size.

As an example I now have 987 Newsgroup messages and since I will have to
check back to determine the result of your investigation that the number
will only grow to the point that I may compromise the Entourage database
size and corrupt everything that I have. I have even tried to make a rule
as suggested in the Entourage Help Pages but that doesn't seem to work
either.

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

You shouldn't be concerned with 1,000 or even 10,000 newsgroups messages
compromising the Database. Each message will take about 4-5k of space.
That translates to maybe 4-5MB of space, which is nominal in today's world.

As messages are removed from the server then (I believe) they are also
removed from Entourage. That leaves holes in the Database for new
messages to fill. At some point, if you regularly peruse the same
newsgroups, your Database file will peak and then plateau in size. This
is similar to body builders who show dramatic results when they begin
training but later hit an invisible wall and stop growing.

Hope this helps!

My database is 677 MB and I am on several newsgroups. I have a lot of mail.

Somehow I pictured you as one of those 8GBers. ;-)
