Set a Default Character Set for Compose
Is there any way I can change the "Compose" default character set from
"Automatic" it Unicode (UTF-8)?
I know that in "Preferences" I can do this for reading unlabeled messages,
but I can't figure out how to force "Compose" to default to UTF-8 whenever I
want to compose a new message. I know I can manually set it for each message
in the formatting menu, but that's a hassle.
Thanks in advance. Tag: Set a Default Character Set for Compose Tag: 68559
View preferences revert
Every time I do an update or rebuild the mail database in Entourage, all my
view preferences revert to the default (I don't have a few of the columns
showing, and turn off "show in groups" for every folder).
This is very annoying since I have to reset my prefs for each and every
folder. Is there a way to set these preferences globally, instead of folder
by folder?

Using relative dating
Entourage 2004 Mac OS 10.4.3
Hi, I used to work in Outlook and I was able to schedule
appointments/meetings for a certain day by typing "today", "next Monday",
etc in the date field. I haven't figured out a way to make this work in
Entourage. Any ideas?

Automatically assign category in the calendar
Entourage 2004 for Mac OS 10.4.3
Hi, I'd like to my appointments/events to automatically assign a category
based on the type of meeting. For example, I have two projects going on and
if I have a meeting for Project A, I would like it to automatically apply
that category/color. I've several email rules to do this to messages but I'm
stumped on how to do it for the calendar.
Any ideas?

Exporting Projects
Is there any way I can export all my Projects in one go as I can the Address
Book, Calendar and Tasks? Do I really need to open each Project and select
"Backup" from the "Overview" tab?
I want an easy way to keep Entourage on my machine at work and on my
PowerBook at home synchronised and archiving/restoring seemed like the way
to go, but I'm not so sure. Any ideas how I can easily keep the two in sync
would be very much appreciated.

Exporting mail from Entourage X to Outlook 2003
Hi,
I have a client who until recently has been using Entourage X and has

I tried converting the In folder etc. to mbox files but of course
Outlook doesn't like those.

Most of the messages I can find about synchronizing or importing assume we
are importing from Outlook into Entourage.
I want to synchronize, because I belong to a work group that uses things
like GoToMeeting that just won¹t work on the Mac. I¹ve been trying to get by
using Eudora as the common email program and Now software for calendaring
and contacts.
That all sort of works, but I often need to respond to calls for meetings
and stuff like that. It feels safer to migrate to Entourage/Outlook for
calendaring as well as email. (I gave up on Eudora a while back, but I have
been keeping it current on my Mac and the PC since it is thoroughly
cross-platform.)
I have a solution for email... Not one I like, but it works.
I bcc an account called ³Outcopy² with every send. Then I keep all the
inbound mail from that account on both computers. Of course all I have to do
to keep incoming synchronized is log onto my mail servers.
I do NOT use exchange servers. I use my own domain email accounts hosted at
GoDaddy.
I see this and that program offered that will enable synchronizing Entourage
and Outlook, but could someone please tell me what really works well and how
to bend it to my needs?
Thanks!

Messages from my IMAP in box automatically delete and move to "Folders on my computer"
The subject pretty much describes the problem:
I receive a message and it arrives and then is instantaneously deleted
and moved to the inbox on the "Folders on my computer".
Additionally, some random messages are in the same inbox -even though
they are older ones from my IMAP server.
This is making me a little nutty. Any ideas?

We've installed the Services For Macintosh (SFM) from the Mactopia

We can connect to Exchange and mail/contacts/calendars pour in. Still,
there must be some setting turned off on SBS 2003 Exchange. There are

Reply using the Default Account when it should not!?
Hi All,
First query in this forum. I have an account in an IMAP server which
receives emails for a number of different email addresses. I have set up a
single account in Entourage which retrieves the messages in this single
account from the IMAP server (and it does so happily), however; when replying
to those messages, I do not seem to be able to get Entourage to reply to the
address under which it was received.
I have read the posts in the forum that ask similar questions but i would
like to know
i) why Entourage (2004 with 11.2.5) does not do what it is supposed to do
when I leave the "Reply using the default account" Unchecked
ii) how can I get it to work ?
iii) is the only answer the magic script(+schedule) by Barry Wainwright?
Appreciate any help/pointers/hints
thanks in advance

When setting up a project, you can certainly set the rules for emails

inviting attendees from Entourage 2004 to Outlook 2003 the latest?
Hi
There's lots posted here and on the great MVP site (you guys do a great
job). But I'd be grateful for an update/summary on my specific problem
since the sheer volume of traffic this and related stuff makes it hard
to figure out if I've understood.
Specific problem:
I invite an Outlook 2003 user (not on Exchange) to an Event. The event
shows up in their calandar and they have buttons to accept, decline
etc. They accept and a message comes back to me Accepted: event name.
But it doesn't update the event in Entourage to say it's accepted. The
other way round it works: ie They send me an event I accept and they
are updated. I've made sure that my contact details in their (the
Outlook user) is configured so they don't send me RTF. I've also
fiddled about with their setting turning UUencod on and off.
So, what have I missed. Does it work or is it one of those
incompatabilities that continues to irritate?
Thanks in advance.

HELP with weird Suitcase Message in Entourage
Hello all.
I would have to say that my office PM G5 has been "plagued" with fonts
problem recently... and the bottomline is, it seems that all my fonts
are corrupted??
Lately when I launch Entourage and click on a new email to read, a
little window pop up will say:
(! in a dialog bubble icon)
Suitcase
>From Suitcase (TM)
There was a conflict when attempting to activate the font 'Bookmam Old
Style' in the suitcase Bookman Old Style for this document. Please
close the document and resolve the conflict in the Suitcase application
OK Button
I click OK and can still continue to read the email, but seems like
every new email will have a similar message, with different font in the
pop up.
A check in Suitcase and the Bookman font in question is not activated,
at least by Suitcase, but it shows it is active, with a User icon
besides... so I "suspect" it is either activated by Font Book (which I
have loads of problems previously) or it is already in the systems.
This series of font-related problems occur only recently, so I don't
know what might have cause all these...
I have not update the latest MS Office Updater yet... should I?
The problem is not major, but very inconvenient and "annoying"...
I have a more major font-related problem when trying to open a Word or
Excel docu:

Can't Get Entourage to Display Text Formatting Correctly
I've recently launched a website - part of it's functionality is to
send out emails to registered users. The emails are comprised of
postings created on the website which incorporate html formatting
created with QWeb Editor - mostly pretty basic formatting such as bold,
justification, text color, and hyperlinks.
It turns out that emails received in every other email scenario we've
tested (outlook on PCs, to hotmail, yahoo, gmail, and webmail on the
Mac all display the text formatting correctly, except for Entourage,
which displays the text as plain text, with no formatting whatsoever.
Entourage gives the error message at the top of the email: "The message
may not be displayed properly because it contains an unknown character
set." Emails received from other sources all seem to show formatting
correctly.
Can anyone tell me how we have to configure the outgoing emails so they
can be properly displayed in Entourage, as well as in hotmail, yahoo,
gmail, etc., and on PCs as well? Does Entourage have some special
requirement that we need to incorporate into our email engine?
I'll paste the source from the test email below, if that is of help:

AutoCorrecting URLs in Entourage
Thought I'd share how to "fool" Entourage into not capitalizing the
first "w" of a web address when "Capitalize first letter of sentences"
is enabled.
Add an entry under "Replace text as you type" with:
Replace: Www
With: www
You will see Entourage auto capitalize the first "W", but then it will
replaceit with "w".
Kinda weird that way you have to do it. Tag: Set a Default Character Set for Compose Tag: 68505

Size matters! ;) Font disparity in Entourage 2004 (... in the year 2006)
Feel my pain. At long last, I bought into the hip new Apple commercials
and took the plunge from Windows PC with Outlook 2000 to a new 20" iMac
with Office for Mac (and Entourage instead of Outlook).
These two programs, as I understood it, were supposed to be roughly the
same software and therefore make my transition seemless and workable
and most importantly (according to the Apple commercials)...
*compatible*.
[skit] "Hi, I'm Apple. Hi, I'm PC." "Apple: 'I work well with
others.'" Oh yeah?
The problem I am having is that when I was a Windows Outlook 2000 user,
I always used 10-point font in HTML (so I could format text and insert
images) with Outlook emails. (fyi - I used to compose my emails in Word
which Entourage for some reason does not provide as an option)
Now, if I compose an email in 10-point font using Entourage, the text
is awkwardly difficult to read (for me while composing) because it is
so small on the iMac display.
I have seen "work arounds" posted about changing my default font to a
higher point size, like 14-point or 16-point, but then what situation
does that create for the receipient? Yes, it appears better to me
visually but it also has a real effect on the font size for the
recipient, right? This is my experience at least.
I don't want to satisfy myself only to learn that my contacts are
getting emails with gigantic fonts. I also do not want to need to
readjust my emails every time (...so tedious).
I think most of the world probably uses 10-point or 12-point as
"standard" font size for letters, etc. .
Does anybody have a solution? If not, then at least an explanation?
Thanks, Jeromy
PS - the Entourage 2004 preview window seems to have other "small font"
issues and generally the text accompanying the buttons (reply,
send/receive, etc) is inherently small and not able to be adjusted via
preferences. I am also not willing to use the user accessibility "zoom"
since it is awkward. I am in my twenties and have good eyesight, so it
is not a vision thing.
Why can't we all just come up with a universal standard for text fonts
and attachments? Tag: Set a Default Character Set for Compose Tag: 68501

very strange loss of mouse while using entourage
Hello,
this happens to me very rarely but when it does, I invariably lose part
of an email, so I have to at least write and see if any else has it
happen? It's happened on both my old g4 powerbook as well as on my new
mbpro (i moved my user/settings/etc all over so ...)
I *think* it has happened only while at working using (don't laugh) an
MS natural kbd and an ms intellimouse through an iogear kvm. other
machine on the kvm is a PC, zero problems ever so i dont *really*
suspect the kvm but you never know.
Also, I just installed the latest office 2004 patch today and it did
happen afterwards. It's happened ever since i've used office 2004.
So. While using Entourage (and it's ONLY happened while using
Entourage), and drafting an email, i'll click the mouse (maybe i'm doing
some odd click combo accidentally but i dont think so), and the system
suddenly seems to think the left mouse button is permanently clicked.
When i move the mouse up and down it highlights the text in the email.
Mouse clicking doesnt work, but i do have a pointer.
Only way I can start to save the machine is to ssh in from elsewhere and
kill -TERM the entourage process.
But the mouse is still hosed. So today I started just apple-tabbing
through each open app and killing them one by one to see who/what was
keeping this "hosed-ness" going. Killed Safari, Opera, no luck. Killed
Adium, iTunes, no luck. got to Parallels and had to force quit (couldnt
click on the suspend/power off buttons).. and my mouse came back to
life. (for the record i had unplugged mouse/kvm/etc, plugged mouse in
directly, all that stuff).
Yet on my old powerbook, without parallels, this would also happen to me
- and just going through killing random open apps would bring me back to
usable.
After i kill the offending apps everything is fine. I've pasted
system.log entries during the time it happened and after... I don't see
any obvious offenders but i'm happy to be wrong ! Also - this time it
happened not long after coming out of sleep mode (you'll see it in the
logs) but most of the time that's not the case ..
Thanks for any help you can lend,
Matt

Microsoft Exchange 2003, Entourage version 11.2.5 error sending mail
Our Exchange Admin upgraded from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003 over
the weekend, and mail had been working fine previously. Now, everything
seems to work save for the fact that when I send out email, I get a pop

The mail account is configured incorrectly in Entoruage. Review the

Only patrial export of inbox in E v. X
I have posted several items about this problem client, but the short is he
has a 3.8GB DB in Entourage v. X I deleted about 4000 emails, leaving him
only with the last 3 months worth of email in his inbox. I then tried a
rebuild on the database and it never completes - returns the same error as
the attempts before deleting the 4000 emails:
The database could not be rebuilt because there is not enough room on the
disk to create the new database files.
And there is plenty of room on the hard disk.
So I exported (drag and drop all his folders to .mbox files), created him a
new Identity and imported all the .mbox files and everything worked great,
except the inbox.mbox. Even though there are 3 months worth of emails in the
old identity for the export, only a handful of emails (20 or so) make it into
the new Identity. It seems to be a problem with the drag and drop, creating
the inbox.mbox (for it consistently is only 18.1MB).
For now he is switching back and forth between Identities to access his old
email, but does anyone have any tips on how to actually export the entire (3
months) inbox to the new Identity? Tag: Set a Default Character Set for Compose Tag: 68472
Different timezone issue
Ok, after applying 11.2.5 update, the timezone on the calendar items is
still messed up.
In my case, my Entourage timezone is set to EDT and I am currently on the
west coast (PDT). When I create a new calendar event, I get a warning
banner saying that "Your computers timezone: West Central Africa" which is
not correct.
The event appears on the calendar correctly, and I believe that the
reminders arrive correctly.
But I find it astonishing that MS cannot get this right.

Incorrect Character Set Represented
This happens quite often. I don't know if it is something I have set wrong
or if Entourage is handling things incorrectly.
When I send a message to a non-Mac user, quite often the quotes (double and
single) appear incorrectly.
One email recipient wrote me and said the "iso-8859-1 character set is not
superset to windows-1252. Single left-pointing angle quotation mark (0x8B)
is not supported by ISO-8859-1. Entourage provides incorrect information
about used character set.

POP/smtp problems? In need of a more informed opinion than my own...
Out of nowhere yesterday Entourage stopped sending mail. I am
receiving mail correctly, but anything I try to send just hangs out in
my Out box. When I try to close Entourage, it asked me if I am sure I
want to close since there is 'a network operation in progress.' I am
assuming this means that Entourage is sending the mail, its just not
going anywhere. I would assume this is a problem with our provider,
but mine is the only account having issues, and I am the only one using
Entourage. I have deleted my account and set it up again three times
and nothing. All the ports are correct and the settings are where they
should be. Anyone have any idea what else I can try?
Thanks!

PROBLEMS WITH EMAILS SENT WITH ENTOURAGE TO EXCHANGE CLIENTS
I've got the following problem: when an email is sent from an entourage
client to an exchange one the exchange client inbox is not updated
anymore.
The workaround of this problem is to open the exchange web client were
the inbox items are correctly listed. Then eliminate the entourage sent
item or move it to deleted items. After this action the exchange pc
client restarts working properly.
IS ANYONE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM? ANY IDEA TO SOLVE IT?

downloading contacts from Treo 650?
So I'm trying to get my contacts into Entourage from Outlook. I have them

Script to copy contacts from public folder?
Hi all,
I'm trying (and struggling) to develop a script to handle a particular
Entourage/Exchange task (Entourage 2004 11.2.5, Exchange 2003): copying
contacts from a public folder address book to an Exchange "personal"
address book. I noticed some postings on a similar topic from a couple
of months ago and I was wondering if anyone had made progress on
accessing non-favorite public folders (or alternatively, favoritizing
public folders) via a script. My AppleScript mojo is weak. :-(
We're trying to get around the problem of a lack of LDAP access for our
remote users by creating a public folder full of corporate contacts --
a super GAL. Works fine as a Favorite public folder, EXCEPT for those
pesky Blackberry/Treo/WinMobile users who want to have the corporate
contacts available and don't want to do lookups for them; it's also
easier to populate with extra info (cell numbers, etc.) than the GAL
is. It would also be nice (but not mandatory) to be able to use things
like EntourageABMenu against these addresses, which would require
copying them somewhere else. Ideally this script would be run on a
weekly schedule, or triggered by the user as needed.
Here's what we're trying to script [wish listy items in brackets]:
1. Select all the contacts in the placeholder Exchange address book
"Corp_Local" [or alternatively all the contacts with a "Corp_Local"
category -- Treo and WinMo5 devices only sync up "Contacts" folder so
they may need to go in there] and delete them or move to an archive AB
-- clear out the results of last sync.
2. [are we online? if not, fail or display "retry later" dialog]
Display the "Corp_Public" public folder address book. Wait 1 minute to
sync up. [If the address book is a favorite, the wait is unnecessary]
3. Select all the contact records in the "Corp_Public" address book and
copy them to "Corp_Local." [Assign them all a category of "Corp_Local,"
could use the Custom 8 field script or similar.]
Some of the issues I've seen in *extremely* preliminary poking at the
script --
a) The IDs of public folder address books change from user to user.
This would not be such a big deal if I could hunt them down by name,
but;
b) for public folder address books that are NOT favorites, I don't seem
to be able to look up the ID by name. I can check the ID if the book is
selected ("get the displayed feature of front window") but then 'get
the id of address book "Corp_Public"' fails. This is not really that
surprising, but still annoying. Likewise I can't display or select
public folder address books by their URLs.
------
If anyone has suggestions, alternate approaches, consulting offers or
help, it would be much appreciated.
thanks,
--Mike

P.S. If the GAL search functionality exposed by the "do OWA GAL search"
AppleScript command really does work via HTTP and not LDAP... why the
heck isn't there an interface for it in Entourage? It would really make
this a lot easier. :-) Tag: Set a Default Character Set for Compose Tag: 68452
Preserving Categories when exporting contact info
I'm trying to export all my contact information and still retain
Categories designations. When I export contacts from Entourage (Office
10.1.4 on Mac OSX) and open the file in Excel there isn't a column for
"category" so I lose all the category info. How can I preserve
Categories information?
I tried sorting contacts by Categories first (to manually assign them
in a column later), but they don't stay in any particular order when
exported.

Entourage junk mail problems
For reasons that I do not understands, recently Entourage has started
putting email messages from people who I know well, or even from people
from my own institution into the junk mail folder.
Besides, some junk mail which I have marked as junk, Entourage keeps
putting it into the incoming box.
Any hint about what I'm doing wrong?
Finally just in case someone has an answer: Is it possible to disable
the "hide pictures" settings in Entourage (Entourage would not show
pictures in incoming mails by default...)

Crashing on opening preferences
I re-installed OSX 10.4.7, and Entourage email was no longer showing up
in Spotlight. I try to open preference to enable this and boom, it
crashes Entourage just after the preferences window opens.
I deleted the ~pref/entourge.plst file, and watched a new one get built
when Entourage opened, but the same thing happens.
I've also run Disk Utility, but that had no impact.
Suggestions?

Entourage doesn't print email header information...sometimes????
This problem has been popping up for a while and I've yet to find
any solution to it. When I print certain email's, sometimes fromt he
same people, they don't come up with any header information at all.
The email will start off with the first line of typed text instead of
the usual memo stlye format. To make matters worse it seems to only
happen with certain people, and then not all the time.
I'm currently running a Macmini 1.5 GHz with Tiger 10.4.6 and
Entourage 11.2.5.
If anyone can shed some light on how to get the headers to always
appear that would be great.

trying to import Contacts, Calendar and .wab file
Hey there. Let me start by saying I'm just starting to use a Mac for the

Lost Entourage Data
My computer re-started and when Entourage re-started the Setup
assistant came up and asked me to enter information as if I was using
it for the first time. I lost my calendar, address book, and emails I
save to the computer from my IMAP and Exchange accounts. I lost those
emails as I erased them from my IMAP account after saving them to my
computer. I am new to MAC and don't know how to retrieve the files, if
possible. I found that I have two Microsoft User Data folders. How
can I get the info back? Thanks for your time and help. Tag: Set a Default Character Set for Compose Tag: 68426
Cannot retrieve email error
I was getting -3952, -4848 errors so I rebuilt the data base, I did
typical first and then advanced when that did not work. This also did
not work.
So I tried making a new user data by pulling the old one to trash and
then opening entourage and setting up the account again. Still got
error messages. So now I backed up my identity folder and removed
office using the remover tool and then reinstalled, set up account
again in entourage - everything seemed to be working fine so I drop my
old identity folder in and check it again and again it was working fine
I was able to send and receive mail. But about 10 minutes later I
started getting -5536 error.
