Hello,

I receive these messages intermittantly when retrieving mail in
Entourage 2004. Am I losing mail, or not? Seem to receive some
messages...

Read earlier post on this problem, and tried checking the "use secure
connection" for Receive mail as was suggested, but then received the
message "Unable to establish a secure connection because the correct
root certificate is not installed. If you continue, the information
you view and send will not be secure."

I really don't know what's going on...but I'd like to know if I'm
getting all my mail. A fix would be welcome as well.

No, you're not losing mail.

These errors relate to network timeout problems etc - it can happen when
parts of the network are busy or not available, or when a phone line is
'dirty' (full of static) etc.

No need to worry, the way the protocols work, the server will not consider a
message as delivered until it receives an acknowledgement from the client,
and the client will not acknowledge receipt until it has all the packets. In
the event that a networks connection drops before transmission is complete,
the server will retain the message and try again next connection.

Thanks, Barry. This never happened with Entourage X, but occurs
regularly with 2004 (I have hi-speed connection). It's pretty
irritating, especially when it's part of a regular operation and is
not an indication that anything is wrong. Is there any plan to address
it in an upcoming patch?

I am in fact being sent mail that I'm never receiving, according to
several users (usually of aol). Of course this is all business
related, and it's making me crazy. I do not instruct Entourage to
delete anything, and scan my Junk mail folder before emptying it
manually, but rarely find anything but true Junk (which is great).

Do you know, if someone sends you an e-mail, and it's not returned to
them, and you don't receive it, where it goes?

I would love to be able to rely on e-mail for correspondence, but it
seems less reliable, and comprehensible, all the time. I realize this
is due in large part to all those who abuse it, but what can we do in
the meantime? I'll be spending a great deal of time abroad starting in
September and would love to know that I can stay in touch...that my
mail will not disappear into the ether, nor will anyone else's to me.
Dont' know if it's too much to ask!

How would I go about finding the cause of this static in my network?
I've had these problems in two buildings and it's interrupting a lot
of people in my company. The disruption is intermittent, but typically
when lots of people are present/connected, but not related to specific
individuals. Also, when moving into the new building, we got new
wiring that was certified throughout the building. There are some
reused cables from the wall to the desktops, so I guess there might be
some faulty wiring, but for that to affect the entire company doesn't
seem likely.

Key phrase in there: "but typically when lots of people are present..."

It sounds like it is a network traffic problem, or maybe there is a limit on
the mail server as to how many concurrent connections it will allow. If a
lot of people are around, it is likely that several will be hitting the mail
server at the same time.
