No, you're not losing mail.
These errors relate to network timeout problems etc - it can happen when
parts of the network are busy or not available, or when a phone line is
'dirty' (full of static) etc.
No need to worry, the way the protocols work, the server will not consider a
message as delivered until it receives an acknowledgement from the client,
and the client will not acknowledge receipt until it has all the packets. In
the event that a networks connection drops before transmission is complete,
the server will retain the message and try again next connection.
