I have assigned categories to my address book contacts. They are not working
all of the time. Some messages which have been assigned a category to their
sender come in under the default category (none).

I'm running Version 11.3.3 on iMac w/ OSX 10.4.9

I do not have any mailing lists set up and only a couple of rules.

Are you sure the email addresses for those messages are exactly correct
in the address book?

Yes, they were all working at one time. If I try to add the email sender to
the address book it opens their previously created address card which has
the category set, yet for some reason it does not display the message in the
color specified.

Check your Address Book preferences to be sure you have the option checked
to match categories to senders messages. If you do have it checked your
preferences could be corrupt. Try deleting these files to see if that will
solve your problem

~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Entourage Preferences

The preference is checked. I also deleted my pref's and still have the same
issue.

Also tried trashing prefs, emptying trash, restarting & rebuilding
permissions.

This doesn't sound like database corruption, but you can create a new
Identity in Entourage and test there to eliminate corruption. You'll need to
export your contacts for importing into the new Identity. You might need to
drag some messages to the desktop for testing also.

I created a new Identity and imported my contacts. The categories worked as
the email migrated into the new account.

Now I am going through the process of organizing the new identity and
restoring my pref's & folders.

Thanks-
Manny

Thanks for the feedback. Database corruption can have some strange ways of
showing up. Nice to know that you could still get your data out before
Entourage stopped working altogether.
