    - IoGetDeviceProperty() failed on disk device Hi, I'm writing a disk filter driver. I need to call IoGetDeviceProperty() for property DevicePropertyClassGuid. I issued the call from my AddDevice() routine, but it failed with the error 0xC0000034 (STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND). But it doesn't work in my disk filter driver. I cannot why the called returned the error STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND. According to the DDK, the API IoGetDeviceProperty() usually returns STATUS_BUFFER_TOO_SMALL, STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER_2, STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_REQUEST. And in the description of IRP_MN_QUERY_BUS_INFORMATION, DDK says "Bus drivers should handle this request for their child devices (PDOs). " and "Drivers must not send this IRP. Call IoGetDeviceProperty to get information about the bus to which a device is attached.". So, like toaster bus driver(busenum.sys) does, this call should not fail if all the paramters are correct. Even it fails, it should not fail with the error 0xC0000034. In my test, the bus driver of disk device are either MS SCSIPORT or MS ISCSI PORT driver, I didn't test with MS STORPORT driver.     - Do I have to pay special attention on receiving an udp datagram? Hello, I have to implement dns name resolution in kernel mode. My only problem is to receive an udp datagram. I can see that the datagram is send by the name server (with tcpdump) but I'am unable get it. I implemented in a similar way as James Antognini did in his tdi sample code <http://home.mindspring.com/~antognini/drivers/> except my isn't working. ;) At TdiBuildReceiveDatagram() I have the tdi ip address of the name server as ReceiveDatagramInfo and an empty tdi ip address as ReturnInfo. The ReceiveDatagramInfo is a pointer to the same ip address that I used to send the datagram and this works. I have double checked my code but I'am unable see the problem. So I have some questions: What does the transport with an udp datagram that is not taken by a tdi client? Will the transport delete such an datagram? Or is there a timeout before the transport will delete such a datagram? Is it a problem to have a slow machine? That the ReceiveDatagram() call might be to late and the datagram is already received by the transport and no client took it.     - handle leaks inside usb client driver Hello, I have a client usb driver which is built from bulk usb DDK sample . When some data is being sent to the driver ( through an ioctl ) , the Handle count of the user mode application talking to the driver keeps rising ( it keeps rising as long as we are sending data , for the amount of time no data is being sent , handle count remains stable ) The cause of the handle leakage has been isolated to be related to the driver . The GDI handles and User handles of the process however remain stable . I have seen through the code of the driver and there seems to be no explicit handle leakage . Any ideas on how to track this thing down? what could it most possibly be? I am opening the handle to the driver asynchronously from the user mode process , and all ioctls are passed an overlap structure , some of them i want to wait on so i also pass an event handle in the overlap str. and wait on them , for other ioctls i dont . I do not maintain any IRP queueing inside the driver however , since there is no particular type of IRP that i would possibly need more than once unprocessed inside the driver in a row. as a related question , the usb client driver's DLLs is not directly loaded into the address space of the user mode process talking to it ,and some Windows component ( IO / Pnp manager etc load the dll ) so why is it that the handle count is shown to be increasing in the task manager for user mode process for something that is apparently happening inside the driver? thanks and regards Taha Tag: How to write program for Serial and USB which connect to hardware?     - Phantom Interrupt Hi all, I have a PCI device that is displaying some strange behaviour, which I cannot seem to track down. When I put the machine into standby everything goes as normal and the machine ends up in its low power state. I then press the power button to bring it back up and I get the following: XP: My ISR gets called almost immediately and any of my calls to READ_PORT_UCHAR() result in a delayed response of 0xFF. When I say delayed, I mean it takes 20-25 PCI clock cycles as opposed to the normal 2. Inspection of the hardware shows that its not generating an interrupt. Inspection of the PCI bus shows there are no interrupts. 2K: ISR gets called a bit later than XP, calls to READ_PORT_UCHAR() result in valid responses, although there is still no real interrupt. Also, the phantom interrupt will occur randomly thereafter, sometimes in small bursts of 10-20. Now to finish everything off, the problem remains when using a different machine with same hardware, but disappears when moved to a completely different machine. For reference; I am experiencing the strange behaviour with a Dell Dimension L800r (I've used BIOS versions A09 and A14 with the same results). Has anyone ever run into something like this before?     - DDK USBView sample bug There is a bug in the usbview DDK sample when they display the wMaxPacketSize information for high-speed isochronous and interrupt enpoints. In the current sample (3790.1218) the just display the wMaxPacketSize field. In the description of this field in the USB 2.0 spec, it says: For all endpoints, bits 10..0 specify the maximum packet size (in bytes). For hight-speed isochronous and interrupt endpoints, bits 12..11 specify the number of additional transaction opportunities per microframe.     - USB DATA Frame Synchronization I'm using interrupt endpoints to read data from my USB device. I appear to be having some problems related to maintaining the correct DATA0/DATA1 data frame synchronization between my device and the USBD. I've read the documentation and still am confused. So, my questions are: When, if ever, does the USBD reset the data frame for a particular endpoint back to DATA0? Can I (and is it ever wise to) force the USBD to reset an endpoint's data frame to DATA0?     - issue with DHCP discover and wireless Hi, I have a WPA client that works fine, receives the group key, no problem. If I use static IP I can connect to the Internet. But if I send a DHCP discover message (broadcast), I don't get a DHCP offer back. (I also never get a dhcp address) Now someone said I need to reset the Multicast list for this to work. I set the oid OID_802_3_MULTICAST_LIST with 0 but still I don't get any DHCP offer.     - Slave DMA working??? Hello sir, i am using System DMA to transfer data from a buffer to a ISA device. For understanding of DMA . i was trying to do a DMA operation between commonBuffer to userBuffer. Will Maptransfer do the Dma operation? The device and the driver are working well so far, until I followed the suggestion of some experts to turn on driver verifier. OK, I did that and ran into several problems (which actually was caused by my not so correct code). The most ones I could solve but there was one I couldn't get rid of: The DMA runs perfectly but the data are always 0x0E, no matter what was in my user buffer! The device is not "scatter/gather-able" so I split up the DMA transfer into several small one-page DMA transfers. The logical address determined by MapTransfer() seemed to be NOT describing my user buffer. When DMA checking of driver verifier is disabled the transfer works perfect and the logical address determined by MapTransfer() is higher (e.g. 0x0a2ed1f8), but I don't know if the address has anything to do with that problem.     - WinXP PRO - UPS Minidriver Dll localisation bug ? Hi, I've written an UPS minidriver Dll. When running the Dll on an english version of Windows XP Pro everything works fine. According to the DDK documentation the battery status (HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\UPS\Status\BatteryStatus) has 3 documented states (0=unknown, 1=OK, 2=replace). Looking at the UPS status display (Start\Settings\Power Options\Power Options Properties\UPS) the display shows "Good" for state 1 and "Needs replacing" for state 2. When shutting down the system because of lost AC power a messenger service dialog box pops up saying "The UPS service is starting shut down at XXX". So far so good, the DDK documentation is consistent with the user display. Running the same Minidriver Dll on a german Windows XP shows a slightly different behaviour. The UPS status display shows "Niedrig" for state 1. This means "low" - a big difference to the documentation and the english version and confusing for the user because he thinks the batteries are low. The messenger service dialog box says "Der USV Dienst beginnt, wegen geringer Batteriespannung, bei XXX mit dem Herunterfahren." This means "The UPS service is starting shut down because of low battery voltage at XXX". This is also a big difference to the english version and confusing for the user because he thinks the batteries are low. The behaviour is the same with SP1 and SP2 of the german version. The hardware is a 3COM 3c90x on PCI. Once the driver is installed the user is not able to change any network settings for other installed network drivers (that do use NDIS drivers). The properties of other installed network drivers is disabled. The client has to uninstall the non-NDIS WDM driver to change the network setting and then re-install. It's adapted from an earlier kernel-mode printer driver. I'm trying to work out the final kinks, and I've come across some rather odd behavior. I've found that some applications have trouble printing particular shapes (diagonal lines and ellipsesfor example) on any page except the first. In the kernel-mode driver, these work fine, and in the debug output I can see calls to DrvBitBlt for each of these shapes that is drawn on the printed image. In user-mode, I don't see these calls. In fact, I don't see any of my driver code being called. Somehow these shapes make it onto the first page I print, but never the second. I am hooking DrvBitBlt, DrvCopyBits, DrvStretchBlt, DrvTextOut, DrvFillPath, DrvStrokePath, DrvStrokeAndFillPath, and DrvLineTo. Basically, the service si started before the logon and it makes an IOCTL to the driver with the necessary data. It also wants to create an Event that the driver would call whenever it needs data and waits on the event so that when the event is triggered, it does an IOCTL(KssyncrhroniseDeviceControl through a cutom property set) and then goes back into Wait mode for the event to signal. How would this be done ? Just implementing a pending IRP wont do as there are no IRP's, but SRB's and the WMD streaming driver would only interact with the Stream Class driver. Does, the WDM driver need to implement EVENT_SETS(I guess not) ? Because, in this case, the service can Create an Event and send that event handle to the WDM driver and wait on it to get into signalled state ? so if thats the right approach, what does the WDM streaming driver need to do to handle this scenario and signal the event, whenever it needs some data.     - USB to IDE in 2003 Here I am developing the USB to IDE device. A strange problem happened in server 2003 is that the disk drive will not be showed "the first time" in the explorer when I connected my device to host. It is not showed until I assign the drive number to it. On other Windows, the disk drive will be automatically assigned by OS. I found that the disk drive will be automatically assigned if I set the RMB(Removable Medium Bit) in the SCSI Inquiry just like the USB card reader. If I clear this bit in case of connecting HD, the disk drive will not be assigned unless I manually assign it. Why this happened? Is there any solution? I am new to hardware programming.

I need to write a program for reading data from Card Reader which connects
to the PC windows 2000/XP OS through Interfacing The Serial / RS-232 Port /
USB / Bluetooth / Infrared.

May I ask does serial port equal to com port?

The program needs to read and write data of the smart card which places on
top of the card reader. The card reader has serveral models, they support
Serial / RS-232 Port / USB / Bluetooth / Infrared.

After reading the data, the data will be passed to server's database through
internal network.

On the other hand, the program can write data to the card through card
reader.

Now, I want to know

Which programming language, SDK and IDE should I use? The program is only
running on windows OS.

Languages: C++ / VC++ / VC.net / C# / J2SE

IDE: VC++ 6.0 / Borland C++ Builder / VS.net

I downloaded a Serial SDK from http://home.arcor.de/groschh/SerToolInfo.htm,
but how can I use it?

Any online tutorial, code sample or open source project are available?

Please advise.

Yes.

You can use the usual C/C++ development tools to write the app which opens
"COM1" and calls Comm API functions on it. This is the easiest way.
