    - How to notify the system of USB disk number change? I write an utility for my usb storage device. The utility can configure the usb storage device as one or two usb disks. After the disk number is changed, I need to notify the system of this change so that the file explorer can update the disk icon. What should I do when the usb storage is configured from one to two disks or from two to one disk? I think it needs to notify the driver to reenumerate its child PDO for usb storage. But how??     - How to shared virtual space between driver and application? Many posts have talked about this topic, but I still have some questions. A normal solution to share buffer between driver and application is, 1. application allocates a buffer, 2. pass the buffer pointer to driver by an IOCTL. 3. driver calls ProbeForWrite to probe the buffer, creates an MDL for that buffer and calls MmProbeAndLockPages to lock pages, then calls MmGetSystemAddressForMdlSafe to get a system-space virtual address. After calling MmProbeAndLockPages() and MmGetSystemAddressForMdlSafe(), driver gets a nonpaged buffer pointer and buffer occupies physical memory. That is not what I wanted. In my case, a driver thread runs always at PASSIVE_LEVEL and it needs to manipulate many massive buffers allocated by an application. If they are all commited to nonpaged buffer, memory resource may runs out. Can I get a page-able system-space virtual adress which memory is shared with application?     - Dependencies inf directive I have developed two drivers for Windows 2000: a virtual bus driver and a filter driver for one of my devices. The filter driver queries the bus driver, so the bus driver needs to be loaded first. Unfortunately on system startup the filter driver is loaded first and fails to initialize properly. I've added a Dependencies directive to my AddService section for the filter driver as follows: [filter_addservice] ... Dependencies = BusDriver ... where "BusDriver" is the name of the service as it shows up in the services section of the registry. Windows is ignoring this directive.     - maximum interrupts/second I could not find any up to date information using Google Groups on this question which is quite simply is there a guideline for the maximum number of interrupts a second that can be processed by a Windows 2000/XP system running on a CPU such as an AMD XP-1800+ (approx 1.5 GHz)? The problem arises because I need to deal with a CBR ATM stream running at about 7.5 Mbps and the hardware generates an interrupt for each ATM cell. The math works out to about 20,000 interrupts per second in each direction or 40,000 sustained interrupts/second if I attempt full duplex communications. Is 40,000 achievable? 20,000?     - How to access Expansion ROM space I have a PCI card which has a commercially available Intel PCI chip on it. The HW designer added four extra functions which are only accessible through the Expansion ROM interface (to save $ and space without a bridge chip) and which generates interrupts. This is a single function card, no bridge chip, and the PCI chip currently has an unsigned driver developed by Intel, although I expect it will be signed someday. We need to support XP and 2000 only. And yes SW needs to fix this issue as the HW will not be re-designed. Any ideas on how to develop and release our drivers to get to Expansion ROM or comments on the following ideas? 1. I must allocate PCI memory and assign it to the expansion ROM to work in all systems. I can simply enable the expansion ROM on my test PC for initial tests. 2. I did a test driver on one functionality and simply installed my driver on the device (without the regular one) and then forced accesses to Expansion ROM space and it works but is not releasable. 3. I tried a "virtual" driver and could get PCI memory but could not attach to the interrupt. Not sure if it is illegal to have interrupts in virtual driver or I was supplying bad parameters. 4. I though about installing a multifunction inf to break out PCI function and 4 exp ROM functions and modifying the PCI chip inf to look at name not PCI ID. But what happens when becomes signed driver?     - Windows 98 device setup application I have a 1394 WDM driver for Windows 98 SE and I need to write a device setup application to setup the driver. As somebody mentioned before in this list, the SetupCopyOEMInf function won't do the work in Windows 98. What's more, I can't just go into the registry to setup everything, because I don't know the device registry entry before the device is actually plugged into the system (PnP driver). Is there any way or any API in Windows 98 that works like SetupCopyOEMInf in 2000/XP? I also tried to manually copy everything myself. I copy the INF file to %windir%\inf\Other directory, and copy my 1394 driver to %windir%\system32\drivers directory. When I first plug in a device, the system install the driver for my device automatically!!! I also noticed that every file in windows\inf\Other directory has the same name pattern: Provider name followed by the original name of INF file. So I guess there must be some way to let Windows 98 copy the driver file and INF to the right directories. Any one has any idea of what this API is? In this case, 71F96464-78F3-11d0-A18C-00A0C9118956, we are replacing the standard Video Proc Amp page. The remainder of the entry is the REG_BINARY expression for the GUID of the replacement page. This is the same format as used by the IID key in the more commonly seen HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaInterfaces section of the registry. Of course, the replacement GUID must be registered as a COM server: HKCR,CLSID\%MyProcAmpPPage.CLSID%,,,%MyProcAmpPPage.FriendlyName% HKCR,CLSID\%MyProcAmpPPage.CLSID%\InprocServer32,,,%MyPPLib% HKCR,CLSID\%MyProcAmpPPage.CLSID%\InprocServer32,ThreadingModel,,Both And just to be clear about the format of the second PageAliases GUID: [Strings] MyProcAmpPPage.CLSID= {3DC2E821-4713-11d2-BA41-00A0C90D2B05} These inf file settings will globally replace the original property page with the replacement page. Based on my original speculation, this replacement should be system wide. The behaviour has been confirmed with graphedit and amcap so I assume it is in fact system wide. Furthermore, it is confined to only your device. Other devices using the original property page are not overridden. Moreover, if you flub the construction of the replacement property page in your CreateInstance function (for example *phr=E_NOTIMPL; return NULL;), the page does not show up at all. This may be a bit hacky, perhaps depending on the implementation of the callers (although perhaps not), but I think it would allow you to do something like merge the controls of a standard page into a seperate page that you have constructed - for whatever reason you might want to do such a thing. Again, this works under both amcap and graphedit. While this facility is ripe for abuse, it does seem to be something that might be useful on certain occasions.     - Accessing MP_Adapter object for IRP routine Hi, I am using the DDK sample (Netvmini) to write a virtual network driver. I have a question regarding to acess the MP_Adapter object for the IRP routines (eg. IRP_MJ_DEVICE_CONTROL). The routines are trying to insert and remove packets from the adapter's working queue. However, the adapter object is not an input object when the IRP routines are called. One apporach is to make the adapter object global; therefore, the IRP routines can access the adapter object and the queue. I'm trying to find a way that I can know which card has which index. I thought the IP helper function GetAdaptersInfo would give me this but the indices are not the same.     - Regarding FastFat Hi all, I'm still trying to understand how the filesytem is working under XP. As a learning exercise I've written a small driver which locates, and hooks into the \FileSystem\FastFat driver - all I'm doing is replacing the function pointer in the FastFat dispatch-table with a pointer to a function in my driver, which looks like this: NTSTATUS NewDispatchRead(PDEVICE_OBJECT DeviceObj, PIRP Irp) { NTSTATUS status; PMDL Mdl = Irp->MdlAddress; PVOID Buffer; /* step1: lock down IRP here and access memory */ if(Mdl != 0) Buffer = MmGetMdlForNonPagedPool(Mdl, ...); status = OldDispatchRead(DeviceObj, Irp); /* step2: lock down IRP and access memory */ if(Mdl != 0) Buffer = MmGetMdlForNonPagedPool(Mdl, ...); return status; } OK, I don't want to get into a debate as to whether this is good practise or not (I know it isn't) - this is for experimental purposes only. So what I'm observing is the following: the "original" dispatch routine for FastFat IRP_MJ_READ generally returns STATUS_SUCCESS rather than STATUS_PENDING. This presumably means that the original handler has (during it's processing) set up it's own completion routine, called whatever the next driver might be with the IRP, and then waited for the completion routine to execute (using an event and KeWaitForxxx) before finally returning "yes, the read is complete" Does this diagnositic sound correct? So my conclusion from this is that the buffer described by Irp->MdlAddress should contain valid data when the OldDispatchRead function returns STATUS_SUCCESS, right? But....if you look at the code I posted, I have two steps (1+2). At step1, I can see the contents of the buffer no problems (using ProbeForRead etc). But this is not useful because the buffer hasn't been filled up by the read operation yet. What I really want to do is access the buffer contents at step2 (after the OldDispatchRead) but the memory range the Mdl references seems to be invalid at this point - so my second conclusion is that the normal FastFat IRP_MJ_READ function completes the read operation and then frees the memory referenced by the Mdl in the original IRP. Does this sound correct? So my next goal is to somehow access the buffer the Mdl references *after* the original dispatch routine has returned. My current "hack" is to do this at step 1: Mdl = IoAllocateMdl(IoCurrentStack->UserBuffer); MmBuildMdlForNonPagedPool(Mdl); MmMapLockedPages(Mdl, KernelMode); /* call the original dispatch routine */ and then this at step 2: PVOID Buffer = MmGetSystemAddressForMdlSafe(Mdl, LowPriority); MmUnmapLockedPages(Buffer, Mdl); IoFreeMdl(Mdl); I can now access the Buffer and see the results of the read operation!!! But I'm pretty wary of why this is even possible, or even legal, as I'm assuming that the original memory range has been freed, and the Mdl I build myself points to "dirty" pages that by chance contain valid data . So, could someone please explain what the effect is of locking down the buffer in this manner, why it is unsafe, any better methods to achieve what I want...?     - Accessing flash pcmcia under W2K/XP Hi, I am trying to develop a driver that runs under W2K and XP, allowing the bitwise reading/writing of a Flash/ATA pcmcia card by absolute memory location. I have access to a previous driver that worked under NT by accessing the APSoft CardWare API, which uses the Card Services protocol, but W2K and XP don't support that protocol so I have to start from scratch. Can anybody point me towards any resources that will help me? My project can afford to buy driver software such as CardWare, but I'd need the SDK for code examples. I want to get wpa-psk with tkip up and running. at the moment I guess I am not authenticated because I don't get any ip address from the dhcp. I use hmac_sha1 algorithm to create the key material (is this the right one to use?)http://www.deadhat.com/wlancrypto/ http://www.deadhat.com/wlancrypto/password_hashing.c I don't get any error when I make the ndis requests. Since I havn't set any KeyIndex on the access point should that be left out in the NDIS_802_11_KEY? when I set NDIS_802_11_WEP_STATUS should I use Ndis802_11Encryption2Enabled or Ndis802_11Encryption2KeyAbsent? (if I try to use KeyAbsent I get NDIS_STATUS_NOT_ACCEPTED back from the request) Since I can't think of anything that can be wrong except the key material (and keyindex - wep_status), is there somehow I can verify that my key has the correct format? Since there isn't that many new oids from using wep I assume I shouldn't be that difficult to get it working.     - usbser.sys changes between 2k and XP? Hi, We use usbser.sys to provide a basic virtual serial port for communication with a number of different devices over USB. This has always worked well, but recently we have had reports of intermittent BSOD stop errors under windows XP when transferring data from a device to the PC. This can be reproduced regularly. (see end of post) The BSOD has not been observed on any other platform, and if we replace usbser.sys on XP machines with the 2k version, then the BSOD is not seen. We have observed that our data rate under XP is higher than 2k, and there has obviously been a rearchitecture of the USB stack in XP. Does anybody know the nature of the changes made to usbser.sys between 2k and XP that might result in stop errors? Also, our software that communicates with serial ports is multithreaded - is usbser.sys thread-safe?     - Windows Update Driver Publishing - really no coinstaller allowed? Hi there, I work for a graphics card manufacturer and we'd really like to use Windows Update to distribute driver upgrades. However, our driver ships with a co-installer dll that does certain vital bits of PnP arcana that are necessary on Win2K. According to the document at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/driver/WinUp.mspx, "Drivers must install core functionality from the INF file. (snip). There can be no setup utilities for files that provide core device functionality." Does this mean we're not allowed to have a co-installer? PCMCIA LogConfigOverride Hi, I have a PCMCIA which I need to have an I/O Window mapped to it and I require the PCMCIA bus controller to use the wait signal to access the i/o registers on my card. After searching high and low for the past few days, I realised that I can specify logConfigOverride section in the .inf file. The thing is there are so many things to it that I think I am getting everything wrong and my driver installation keeps crashing my PC.     - Trouble loading WIA minidriver DLL under Windows 2000 I have a problem related to a WIA minidriver. I'm not sure which newsgroup is the correct one for this; let me know if there is a more appropriate group. I've created a WIA scanner minidriver that loads and works fine on Windows XP. I also intend for this minidriver DLL to provide STI functionality in Windows 2000 and Windows 98. My problem is that this WIA/STI DLL is not getting loaded under Windows 2000 for some reason. The STI_Trace.log file contains only the following error line: e STISVC [stisvc.exe::0x65c] Could not open device ({6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}\0001) . Received from STI: hResult=(80040154). Object not maintained Win2K does not like my DLL for some reason. My entry point function never gets called. However, under Windows XP and Windows 98ME my DLL does get loaded. These are the only three Windows versions I've tried so far. I do have two other working minidrivers I can use as references. One, of course, is the DDK WIA sample scanner minidriver. The other is an existing scanner product that currently works under Win2K, although its STI DLL was not built by me. I believe that my INF file is correct and the registry entries all look good to me. Anyway, to rule out those possibilities, I decided to install the other working scanner product and then rename and substitute my own WIA DLL in place of the other DLL. When I did this, my DLL was still not loaded. But when I substituted the WIA sample scanner DLL, that DLL is loaded ok---its entry point gets called. It's only my DLL that will not get loaded. So there is apparently no problem with the registry, and the DLL can be found. It just won't get loaded and get its entry point called for some reason. I then compared my DLL with the WIA sample minidriver to see what could be different. I built both using the build utility and the Windows XP SP1 DDK, build 2600.1106. I initially had a different entry point than the sample scanner. I was using _DllMainCRTStartup because my DLL uses the C runtime library---in fact, it uses STL as well. So normally I see my DllMain() function get called by _DllMainCRTStartup . But to make sure this wasn't the problem, I made my entry point to be "DllEntryPoint" to match the WIA sample code (remembering to specify DLLENTRY=DllEntryPoint in the sources file of course). But this did not help. I checked the exports (using DUMPBIN) to make sure both DLLs have the same exports. The only difference is the DliHook export in the sample minidriver, but that should not matter. I then compared the "sources" files. Mine is almost the same as the sample minidriver's. There are only two differences. Since I'm using STL, I need to set USE_STL=1 and USE_NATIVE_EH=1. Other than that they look the same. So why does my DLL not get loaded under Win2K?? It should not be a problem with a GUID---the DLL entry point does not even get called. So Windows doesn't even know anything about the GUID yet. The only thing I can imagine is that my entry point looks different in some way, maybe of because the way it was compiled.     - USB performance I have been measuring the performance of a USB 2.0 device we have developed and a driver based on the code provided in the Walter Oney book and discovered some strange things. 1. On dual processor machines, the throughput is 50% greater when one of the processors is removed. This is under Windows 2000 SP4. 2. On some machines, the throughput is more than twice as much under USB1 than under USB2. This is generally with USB1 ports integrated on the motherboard and with a PCI USB2 card. Use the device manager, or see the devcon sample in the ddk for how to
write a program that will manage your device.

Disable all devnodes by Device Manager, this is the only way of unloading
the WDM driver.
