 - When to use memory mapped io register? Hello all, I am a new device driver developer and hope that someone can help on the memory mapped io register. I am working on a new chipset which is recently supporting memory mapped io space feature. For earlier chipset, this feature was not available. To bad to say that my team members have not experienced in memory mapped io register. Therefore, we are not sure when to use memory mapped io register or read the io register from the pci config space instead. If someone can give some advices, that will be great. Thank you.  - Registration Hi! I need to register a virtual serial port so that it can be enumerated with SetupAPI. As far as I understand, this can be achieved by exposing an interface towards the device using IoRegisterDeviceInterface. This function, however, fails for me. This is what I do: IoCreateDevice(DriverObject, sizeof(MY_EXTENSION), &Name FILE_DEVICE_SERIAL_PORT, 0, TRUE, &DeviceObject); // Check status etc IoRegisterDeviceInterface(DeviceObject, &GUID_CLASS_COMPORT, NULL, &ext->SymLinkName); This does not succeed, but instead returns status = 0xC0...10 (invalid PDO). What could cause this? The serial port works, i.e. it is possible to open, close, read, write etc, but the interface registration fails.  - Kernel mode to user mode communication Hi, I am developing a mini filter using the Microsoft IFS kit. My mini filter communicates with a user mode service which contains certain business logic. I have written the user mode service as a Windows NT service. The communication is done using the standard api's like FltCreateCommunicationPort, FilterConnectCommunicationPort, FilterSendMessage and FilterReplyMessage etc. Can the user mode service (not necessarily an NT service) be written in any other language such as Java? I mean, is it possible for the mini filter to communicate with a user mode service written in any other language then c++? Can the service written in other language such as Java, perl call the functions FilterConnectCommunicationPort, FilterReplyMessage etc.? Another approach could be that the user mode service written in Java can some how connect to the communication port created by the mini filter and read the raw data that is posted on it by the minifilter (assuming there is some standard format for the data posted by the Windows api's)? Is this feasible. (1st problem I face is I cannot connect to the port using its name '\\TestPort'). I would choose Java so that my application is portable across other OS, where I will just have to port the mini filter portion while the user mode application remains the same.  - NDIS filter installation issue Hello, I have wrote a NDIS intermediate filter (NDIS 5.0) based on the passthru filter sample code, and I sometime run into an odd issue when installing the driver. The installation will be going fine (Windows asks me to confirm that I want to install that unsigned driver) and I can see the driver listed in the "Items list" of the computer network connection, but the driver doesn't work, it's driver entry function DriverEntry() isn't even called. This seems to occurs if I install/uninstall the driver a couple of times. If the computer is rebooted before re-installing the driver, it work fine. Thanks for any tips/advices.  - Device Path Exerciser HCT test Hello, I am running the "Device Path Exerciser" HCT test and i find out that this test is listing other drivers than the one of the printer i am testing. The test pases but the driver in the 'drivers list' of that test is not the same as the driver of my printer (for which i am running the HCT test). Is this normal? Do you have any suggestions?  - How to force AllocateCommonBuffer in the lower 4Gbytes Dear All, My driver is for a PCI device for which I use teh Dma adapter objects for the Dmas. Thanks to the AllocateCommonBuffer api, I allocate a contiguous buffer that receives the scatter-gather descriptors. For my PCI bridge, they are in the form: - Low Physical Address (32 bits) - High Physical Address (32 bits) - Page size (32 bits) - Next Descriptor pointer (32 bits) All this works very well. The thing is we now need to extend the PC memory to more than 4Gbytes using the /PAE extension (we're still using 32 bits OSs). The descriptors are OK for the data since they are 64 bits compatible BUT the pointers on the descriptors (First and Next Descriptor pointer) ARE 32 bits. This mean that the common buffer SHOULD mandatory be allocated in the lower 4Gbytes of the memory. My questions are the following: - Is this done by the AllocateCommonBuffer api automatically (because this is a common behaviour and not a big constraint)? - Otherwise is there a mean to inform the Dma adapter of such a behaviour? - Or should I allocate the common buffer by hand using something like MmAllocateContiguousMemory + ...?  - Intermediate drivers binding issues Hi all, I am having trouble getting my intermediate NDIS driver to work with Nortel VPN client and a SiS network card. When Nortel VPN and my driver are installed, and all bindings are in place, the PC (2003 box) gets a blue screen on booting. After reading this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;250615 I used the registry, device manager (showing hidden cards) and the DDK's bindview to try and figure out what's going on with bindings on my system. >From what I see Nortel has an intermediate driver that binds to the SiS card. My intermediate also binds to the SiS card, but it seems those two bindings work well together (My filter class is scheduler and Nortel's intermediate is failover so it should be OK). The problem is, that besides the intermediate driver, Nortel also has what seems to behave like an adapter, and goes by the display name of "Nortel IPSECSHM Adapter". My intermediate binds to this device, and that causes the blue screen. When I go to safe mode and disable that binding, the box boots OK. I couldn't understand what that adapter actually is, in device manager and in bindview it shows up as a regular adapter. Its behavior somewhat resembles that of "WAN Miniport (IP)", to which my intermediate does not bind. How can I instruct my intermediate driver not to bind to Nortel IPSECSHM Adapter? Thanks Hillel.  - Help with an idea about printer driver strategy please! Hi All ! I need to create a virtual printer driver that will redirect the output to another installed printer in system. Depends of the information on the printed page, I need to add a watermark.This watermark is determined by the existing of one word located anywhere in the page (at start, middle or end). Worst, all of this should be done in PCL. If this was PS there I saw a command to inject some ps code. But in PCL... nothing found. I solved this solution keeping in memory a copy of the page and at the each end of page of the printerjob I send it to the another printer. My problem is that: the memory occupied by this solution to print a page is around of 40 MB at 600x600 resolution. And this because I save every band in memory. I saw that a lot of programs are printing using maximum 100K for the same page where I spend 40MB. What strategy should I apply in order to solve this problem ? I need just an idea.  - SDIO client driver not working with windows mobile 5.0 PDAs Hai, I've a SDIO client driver which is working fine with all pocket pc 2003 PDAs. But when it comes to Windows Mobile 5.0 PDAs, i've various problems. When i install the client driver (built using PB 5.0 ArmV4i)it notifies me with a message "Starting this program requires a component from an unknown publisher, you should start the program only if you trust the component's publisher. Do you want to continue?" even on giving "yes" it gets unloaded. Why does such a message appear for windows mobile 5.0 pdas? I'm not able to install the debug version of the SD bus driver to get the bus traces. Is there any special procedure or driver to get bus driver traces for these pdas?? When i try to replace the sdmemory dll(using active sync) with the sdmemory dll compiled using PB5.0 ARMV4i it gives me a access denied error. But when i try install the driver by creating a setup.exe it gets installed but it not getting loaded. Is windows mobile 5.0 and windows mobile 2005 are same or different?  - HELP: IoGetRequesterProcessId (Irp) Crashes inside TDI filter Hi In my TDI filter driver, I'm calling the function IoGetRequesterProcessId (Irp) from a completion routine (of my TDI_CONNECT filter function) and sometimes I get BSOD of IRQL_NO_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a). Driver verifier is also running in the background. I started to analyze the dump, and found that 1. The irp is valid. 2. IoGetRequesterProcessId () calls IoGetProcess() in order to get EPROCESS structure of the requested process, and the structure I get is invalid (all structure data is invalid) but IoGetProcess() still returns success to IoGetRequesterProcessId () !! The first thing I thought of is that the process was already ended, and therefore IoGetProcess got an invalid EPROCESS, but how can process be ended if I still have it's irp in my completion routine? This will seem silly but I need a device driver that emulates a microphone, i.e., reads in a wave file and directs buffers to wavein API. I'm using the RealTime Client and it only works with a device driver. I think I can use the pcmex sample in the DDK as a starting point but need more helpful direction. The MSVAD example has savedata functionality but I need "readdata" functionality? I've read Walter Oney's book and am more confused about where to start.  - TrueType Bit map FONT in rendering plugin All, I am working with a TrueType Bitmap FONT that I intended to download to a printer. I am have trouble figuring out how to calculate the dimension values used in the Format 20 Font Resolution Specified header. The values in particular are: Cell width, Cell Height, Pitch, Height, xHeight. The font is 10 point and the printer resolution is 600 DPI. It seems like it should be a simple calculation but when I compare the header values generated by another printer driver I canâ??t figure out how they got their value. The values they get are: Cell width = 48 Cell Height = 127 Pitch = 6.25 Height = 30.28 xHeight = 62 The other thing is I can't figure out how to get the bitmap code. I think I am calculating the glyph index correctly but when I go to the offset I don't see any data that makes sense (comparing the hex content of the .tff to the hex content of the PCL print output).  - Lock entire disk / physicaldrive / FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME I am writing directly to a disk (opend with eg. "physicaldrive1") and want to reject all other accesses to that particular disk and to all logical volumes possibly residing on it. A FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME issued on the disk handle returns immediately with success, while files on a logical drive on that disk are still in use. So Ok, what I need is a LOCK_ENTIRE:DISK or so ..., LOCK_VOLUME is the wrong call :) - but I did not find any other .. Anyone an idea how to do that? tia w.b. My driverentry is called and immediately unload is called.(optionalhandler if specified, is also called and then unload). There is no error status in NdisMRegisterMiniportDriver() in driverentry.  - Unable to get verifier list Debugged is W2K3+SP1 free, only drivers: ntoskrnl, ndis,tcpip,tdi,wanarp are exchanged with W2K3SP1 checked version. Driver verifier was set , machine restarted and ater verifier is started - I can see some statistics of my driver - OK. Problem is that when I connect to this machine with windbg and type: "!verifier 3 drivername.sys" it says: "00000000: Unable to get verifier list".  - ASP Code migration to ASP.net I have been facing an issue for past week. Kindly look at the code if some one can sort it out. Issue is with the code. I have this ASP code. it connects to a server where java is running. It send us a response from there. and we need to run that plain html. As long as the code is in ASP running perfectly fine.  - Interesting synchroization question Either I've got an interesting synchronization problem, or I am not aware of which mechinism is best suited for my operation: I need to protect a resource that is used by a bunch of consumers. The consumers (threads) use the information very frequently and since they only read the data (consume) they can and do access the data simultaneously. I guess it should be inexpensive (easy) for them to acquire access to this resource when they need it. There are also some producers (other threads) of the info. They will infrequently need to update the info. Of course any one of them can only update the info when no consumers (or other producers) are using it. As they do this infrequently and the modification is very fast, it is ok if it is (difficult) expensive for them to gain access to modify the resource.  - splwow64 + CreateDC/DeviceCapabilities from 32 bit app Hello everyone, I'm developing a printer driver for XP 64. The PD itself is 64 bits (UI.dll and rendering dll are 64 bit compiled). However, my driver has to call a 32 bit usermode application. And this application calls CreateDC() (for Fonts) and DeviceCapabilities(DC_PAPERS) under certain situations. These calls do fail very often. When CreateDC() fails, GetLastError() returns 0. When DeviceCapabilities(DC_PAPERS) fails, GetLastError() returns 5 (access denied). I copied wordpad.exe from my 32 bit XP to the 64 bit XP and started it. The fontlist there contains only the opentype fonts, where it should also contain the fonts from the selected printer. When I now kill splwow64.exe with the taskmanager, and restart 32bits wordpad, it contains all fonts. Now I close and restart wordpad a few times - and the fontlist is broken again. After looking for these kind of things in the KB, I found issue 902066. I called MS service, they sent me that file, I installed it, but it's still broken. I have no idea of what I'm doing wrong. In fact I'm sure that I don't make anything wrong :) but so is every other programmer. I even tried killing splwow64.exe with TerminateProcess() when the first try to CreateDC() or DeviceCapabilities() fails. This is of course not a good approach - and in fact I got a few times access denied error for OpenProcess(splwow64), and I don't know how to fix that either. But it worked more often than before. I'd love to compile the 32 bit app in 64 bits - but unfortunatly I use CBuilder with lots of VCL, a mistake I'll never do again. Can anyone give me a hint of how I could make this 32 bit app work like expected? Is splwow64 broken or is it me? I'd even be happy when anyone could tell me what pskill (sysinternals) does different than I do to kill this process.  - Question about serial port reading and writing I have a pic device which received data from and sends a response to the pc. I am using usart 19200 8-n-1 and it seems that after I write the data from WriteFile win32 api, I must do a sleep or else when I perform ReadFile I will miss part on the data.  - Catch process termination in display driver Hi, Is there any way to setup a IRP_MJ_CLEANUP handler in a display driver? Or maybe some type of callback when a process terminates? In a display mirror driver I have a memory mapped section (kernelmode <> usermode) and I need to unmap it when the process terminates. Since I can't guarantee that the usermode app will do a nice shutdown, I need to the handle it in the driver. The video miniport doesn't let me setup the handlers that other types of miniports do (or in other words: I can't figure out how to do it, if it is at all possible). Any ideas?  - USB Storage device + extra functionality I am working on a multi function USB storage device. The device enumerates as a USB storage device and I have been using SCSI pass through commands to communicate with the 2nd device. The 2nd device has an unused interrupt that I want to use to send events up the control endpoint. I am not allow to introduce a driver so I am looking for a way to connect a Windows app the control endpoint. I do not know of any SCSI pass through commands that would result in receiving events from the control endpoint, does anyone know if this is possible? Also, I thought that it might be possible to open the standard USB function driver and listen for events that way, again, does anyone know if this is possible?  - Sharing memory between user- and kernel-mode Hi All, I had a question about sharing memory between a user-mode app and a kernel-mode driver. The user app allocates memory on the heap using malloc or other Win32 equivalent. It then passes a pointer to the memory using ExtEscape as follows: char* userBuffer = (char*)calloc(SIZEOF_USER_BUFFER, sizeof(char)); int ret = ExtEscape(hdc, MAP1, 0, NULL, SIZEOF_USER_BUFFER, userBuffer); The driver side code is as follows: PVOID userBuf; ULONG userBufLen; ULONG DrvEscape(IN SURFOBJ* pso, IN ULONG iEsc, IN ULONG cjIn, IN PVOID pvIn, IN ULONG cjOut, OUT PVOID pvOut) { // other code // ... // initialize global variables userBuf = pvOut; userBufLen = cjOut; } I then copy large chunks of data (10mb) using the global pointer (userBuf) in the kernel, and I am able to see the copied data in user mode without a problem. I have 2 questions related to the above technique: 1) Is it allowed to share memory between user- and kernel-mode in this manner? From what I've read already, it seems to be a more complicated matter. Could somebody please explain why this is working, or why it should not be implemented? 2) I have read also, that a kernel-mode driver is not allowed to maintain state, yet I am able to store a reference globally to the memory pointer passed in to DrvEscape.  - Virtual Joystick driver component Hello, do anybody know if there exist a component, which emulate a physical joystick? And the component be able to configured (add axis, buttons...) through ActiveX or DotNet... Background, why I look after such comonent is, about the defined DirectInput interface other applications should be able to get data from my application (interprocess communication). I thinking, the DirectInput interface is the ideal combination with the kind of data, which should be exchange by this interface. And destination computers where my application will be installed, dosn't must have a physical joystick. On the other side I don't won't develop myself a joystick device driver.  - Building the PrintFeatureFilters sample provided with the the wdk There is a sample XPS driver in the location ..\WinDDK\5308\src\print\PrintFeatureFilters\.. . I tried to build this sample after installing Visual Studio 2005 (using build -cZ from the Vista Checked Build Environment). However, the build did not succeed. On trying to compile individual souce files (for specific filters), compilation errors were received (error c1083: cannot open include file 'atlcomcli.h' : No such file or directory). The documentation said that atlmfc 8.0 from VS 2005 was required to build this sample. On including the path of the atlmfc include file in the sources file, in the Includes section and then trying to build I recieve 215 errors. It seems these errors are coming from the atlmfc include files such as atlconv.h. A sample of one of the errors from atlconv.h is (error C2275: 'DEVMODEA' : illegal use of this type as an expression) Could you please point out where I am going wrong, and what sequence has to be followed in order to build this sample?  - How to make the work going on after usb device re-plug in? Sorry for the long title. The issue is: when the usb device driver (BDA driver) is working for an application, I unplug it out (it's OK) and plug in again without close the application.  - Hardware Server Hey EveryOne, Back in old days before evolution of BSD sockets, usually called BerKely sockets. Communication between tow machines was in fact pains taking job, more over communication even on a single machine with running processes was in fact hard job to do with complex and system dependent techniques. At that time IPC, pipe and RPC namely were used to solve these kinds of problems but once these sockets were introduced then every solution turned right to adopt it. Though we know operating systems do provide specific software structure (Device Driver, I/O routines, loadable modules etc.) but we also know that all platforms require stress testing and long working hours to develop an operating system + platform dependent piece of code. MS new framework, Windows Driver Framework (WDF) is focused to provide more APIs or say a thick layer of operating system for high level languages to work for device drivers (DIG). Today every operating system do provide built in hardware libraries for standard devices like parallel, serial and USB devices. So how about to reuse these operating system facilities for developing a layer between kernel and an entity (Hardware Server). Can we have a hardware server or something like hardware run time environment? Which will be able to communicate underlying kernel for hardware resources rather specific module. Of course the idea is to discard the Device Drivers or Loadable modules, these techniques often end up platform + OS dependent and some times even version dependent solution. There should be a straight way to visualize these resources, developer should be given an opportunity to choose the right interface for his or her device without caring any thing; except focusing on the original functionality of that device usage. How about providing a secure and protected way of communication with underlying machine resources? 1) Providing hardware interface for application developers 2) Providing Server interface for the Administrator (e.g. to stop or start hardware services , set the security levels , access levels) 3) A standardized library to communicate the Application level software.
