    - when is the file system ready? During boot time I'd like to open a file to read some initialization parameters. I have too much data to store in the registry ( I don't know how much is too much, this may be an aesthetic issue), so I am considering storing it in an INI file. How do I know that the file system is ready for business? The info will be in a directory that the user creates. Typically it will be somewhere in C:\program files\...... , but not necessarily.     - comparing all HW drivers on 2 servers Does anyone know of an easy way to compare the device drivers on 2 systems? I've got several supermicro 6014ptr boxes. one will occasionally freeze up - no network, no video, no kybd, etc. A couple others have frozen up similarly once or twice over the course of a year. I get no msgs in the system logs, the memory tests good (memtest86 for 16+ hrs) so I suspect device drivers. I've considered using MS System Information (winmsd), exporting to a file, then comparing, but I'd like to know if anyone has a better method to recommend. thanks!     - Stream Class Custom Video Format Problem Greetings, I am trying to create a custom video format for a USB camera driver based on the Stream Class. I currently have support for RGB24 and RGB8 which works fine for just looking at the video stream. However, I need to support some extended information that I believe is best done via a custom format (namely 16 bit monochrome images and some extended timing information). This custom format is consumed by a specific usermode DSHow filter I am also writing. Everything starts off well: the format is negotiated and UM sink filter gets the expected format information. The pins connect and the stream opens (i.e. my camera gets a SRB_OPEN_STREAM and completes successfully). When I transition into run however, I never get any SRB_READ_DATA calls. I can easily still use the RGB24 and RGB8 formats so I know that the support code around the different formats is working. But there is something about this new format that I am missing. I suspect that I was relying on some KS behavior that is no longer present now that I have left the cozy KSDATAFORMAT_SPECIFIER_VIDEOINFO world. To implement my new format, I created two new GUIDs: MEDIASUBTYPE_MYCAM_RAW and KSDATAFORMAT_SPECIFIER_MYCAM_RAW_INFO There is an info structure to hold the format information: typedef struct tagMYCAM_RAW_INFO { // whatever... }MYCAM_RAW_INFO; And a data range and format: typedef struct tagKS_DATARANGE_MYCAM_RAW { KSDATARANGE dataRange; // I include nothing here because there is no "range" to speak of.     - WaveRT/WaveCyclic miniport usage and Vista certification We developed a virtual sound card driver and want it certified by Microsoft. The purpose of the driver is to capture audio stream and then service that we wrote sends it over the local network to networked speakers for playback. So the driver itself doesn't work with any hardware. Our current implementation (we support Windows 2000 and Windows XP 32 bit at this time) uses WaveCyclic miniport. We just started work on supporting Vista and got our driver working under Vista with some minor changes. We are still using WaveCyclic miniport.     - Output sequence for WPP software tracing Moin, I use WPP software tracing in my driver. For each trace line the first item shown is the CPU number in brackets. I'm wondering if there is a output sequence for those trace messages for the same time stamp. I'm currently analyzing a problem within my driver.     - NdisRegisterDeviceEx() and CreateFile() security settings. Hi all Ndis 6 and Vista... I am using NdisRegisterDeviceEx() with as SDDL of "D:P(A;;GA;;;SY) (A;;GA;;;BA)(A;;GRGW;;;BU)(A;;GRGW;;;WD)" and it returns STATUS_SUCCESS. With a symboliclinks viewer I can see my device. But, when I try to open it with CreateFile() is using GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE, 0, NULL, OPEN_EXISTING, 0, NULL I get the error: 'The request is not supported'. I have tried it with a 0 SDDL too with the same result. I am logged in as Administrator but this needs to work for users too. The old function, NdisRegisterDevice() works on Vista with my Ndis 5.1 driver. Doeas anyone have any ideas?     - Vista 64 bit: HowTo receive origin inf file location? Hi! I need to receive the origin inf file location (path) through my CoInstaller dll when installing a hardware device. I´ve done that in the past using SetupDiGetSelectedDriver and SetupDiGetDriverInfoDetail. Doing it the same way on Vista 64 bit the path points to \Windows\inf. But I need the origin path.     - UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices fails - Please HELP Hi, I want to install a driver for non-PnP printer. For this I create and register a devnode for my device. Then I try to call UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices to update the drivers for the PnP devices. I expected to see my printer added but the UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices failed instead. The driver was installed but the printer was not on the "Printer and Faxes" page. If I add manually "PortName" and its value under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Printer\0000\Device Parameters" and then call UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices I have the printer installed. The problem is that the "Device Parameters" key appears after calling UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices. I cannot create the "Device Parameters" key manually because I am not allowed to. There should be a way to add the PortName parameter somewhere/somehow so that the printer installation to succeed.     - Intel ICH8 chipset doesn't response a DMA ack....(Vista) Folks: I was porting my FIR driver to Vista. My FIR driver work fine on my SIS EV board (both XP and Vista). My Custom used INTEL ICH8 chipset (for mobile). XP worked fine but Vista didn't work. During FIR negotiation, each computer will send/receive 2 bytes data (command and address) and 4 bytes FCS check code. Normally, FIR will send/receive a 6 bytes data (2 bytes data and 4 bytes command). I used LA to monitor DMA cycle and found out Vista didn't response the 5th time DMA ack. The FIR negotiation failed. Then repeated the error. Anyone knew how to monitor DMA operation ? I mean once I start DMA transfer. DMA should move data automatically. How did I know which steps DMA operation was wrong ? There is a strange situation: I installed XP and Vista in the same HD. There is two OS I could choose during booting. If I entered XP then reboot, changed to Vista (without unplug power).     - HID mouse, digitizer device/driver Hi to kernel gurus! I have custom HW (non HID) connected to PC via USB + software system which calculates Tablet PC- like stylus position. The goal is to provide valid mouse and digitizer input form kernel mode. As far as I understand I have to provide valid HID reports to OS. I have to create HID minidriver which does not have any real HW behind , but receives coordinates form NT service. 1) Is HID minidriver an appropriate solution ? 2) In case I would like to provide mouse input will I be able to communicate with my driver form my software ? I understand that OS exclusively locks mouse driver stack. 3) Should I implement separate driver for mouse and digitizer? 4) Can anybody give a reference to the useful driver sample? 5) What is the best way to communicate between my HID driver and my software?     - SetupUninstallOEMInf() FAILS on Vista x86 We have a custom installation utility for a USB device that performs the following actions on Vista x86 : 1/ Installs the .INF and driver using SetupCopyOEMInf(). 2/ Removes the device using SetupDiSetClassInstallParams(DIF_REMOVE) 3/ Removes the corresponsing oem??.inf and oem??.pnf for the device Questions : 1/ We want the installation utility to remove the files in the DriverStore\FileRepository directory as well so we are using SetupUninstallOEMInf(SUOI_FORCEDELETE). This call fails with error code 0x57 (The parameter is incorrect. ) How can we fix this ? 2/ Inspite of the fact that the files in DriverStore\FileRepository are not being deleted, when Vista reenumerates the device, it does not find the .INF file for installing the driver.     - Help! Print Processor Clipping Path Help! I am writing a generic print processor to draw text to the bottom of every print job, like a watermark. On some drivers, the clipping path is set to enclose the original document text, and exclude the rest of the pate. For example, if I draw text in the print processor in the center of the page, but there is only one line of text in at the top of the page of the original document, the text drawn in the print processor will be clipped. I have tried to expand the clipping path, trying almost every clipping function, including removing it altogether. However, I can not change the bottom dimension of the clipping rectangle, no matter what I do. I can change every other dimension of the rectangle, though. Is there something I can do to change the clipping path in a print processor? Modifying the driver is really not a good option, and this is supposed to work for any driver. We have tried quite a few things but nothing seems to work. >From the setupdi.dev.log the failure seems to be in a function in setupdi.dll SetupDiGetSelectedDriver() which fails with the error code ERROR_NO_DRIVER_SELECTED for INTERFACE (E0000203) #1.     - Anyone run DTM on a digital tuner yet? I have a USB digital TV tuner device and BDA driver - HCT-tested (on XP) without problem. I have applied the following dimensions to the machine pool: Ehome\HasTvTuner, Wdk\ConfigureBroadcastReceiverStreaming, Wdk\ConfigureVideoCaptureStreamingMedia. I go to the Device Console, select View By Machine, and then select my device in the Available Devices tree. The Available Jobs pane then shows me the Driver Reliability and Generic categories, but no TV Tuner category. If I View By Driver then the TV Tuner category shows when I select the "MEDIA Driver (Service Name <name>)" level, but again when I select the actual device (one level down), the TV Tuner tests disappear. Anyone mananged to get these tests run on a digital tuner?     - NdisMIndicateReceivePacket for large packets Hi all, Is it legal for an NDIS miniport to indicate up packets larger than what it specified as the maximum via various OIDs (such as OID_GEN_MAXIMUM_FRAME_SIZE, OID_GEN_TRANSMIT_BLOCK_SIZE, OID_GEN_RECEIVE_BLOCK_SIZE, OID_GEN_MAXIMUM_TOTAL_SIZE)? In other words, if the default configuration of the device is to have a maximum packet size of 1514 bytes (to prevent issues arising with applications sending jumbo frames on a non-capable network) but the hardware is always capable of receiving larger packets if they happen to be on the wire, should these be filtered out by software because they happen to be larger the the maximum size returned via the above OIDs? The driver in question is a deserialized miniport with NDIS_MAC_OPTION_TRANSFERS_NOT_PEND set, so we always indicate full packets up to the stack. I've tested indicating up larger packets than we tell NDIS we support, and everything seemed to still handle them fine (tested via TDI and Winsock), but I am concerned that some intermediate driver could possibly get confused if it gets packets larger than what it thought we would indicate up. In essence, is there a proper way to indicate to NDIS that we do not want to support transmitting packets larger than the default frame size of 1514-bytes but yet still indicate up packets larger than this on the receive side? Using the kernel debugger I've narrowed it down to an IRP being sent down the driver stack and getting stuck. Admittedly I've only seen it on one machine so far.     - A corker on x64 checked builds only For some bizarre reason, the build process for x64 on Winddk 5600, using the server 2003 x64 checked build environment (and only that one) blows away anything named tmp, including folders. x64 free, x32 checked and free don't do this. In any case, we use Subversion for our version control - which puts tmp folders in a hidden .svn folder under {driver base folder}\objfre_wnet_amd64 So the folder structure is {driver base folder}\objfre_wnet_amd64 .svn\ prop-base\ props\ text-base\ wcprops\ tmp\ prop-base\ props\ text-base\ wcprops\ Simply doing a "build -ceZ" will recursively blow away all the tmp folders it finds under objfre_wnet_amd64, whether it owns them or not.     - How to retreive the inf file path in a device manager property pag Dear All, I'm still trying to retreive the inf file path used to install the current device, in my device manager property page (see my previous post about that). I'm using the device info set and device info data provided by the OS in the property page provider entry point. My question is: WHY IS THERE NO SELECTED **DRIVER** (the SetupDiGetSelectedDriver says ERROR_NO_SELECTED_DRIVER)? Note 1: I can enumerate the compatible drivers for that device (SetupDiBuilDriverInfoList( SPDIT_COMPATDRIVER ) + SetupDiEnumDriverInfo) but I don't know how to "link" one of them with my current device.     - Environment variable issues Hi, I have recently installed WDK on my XP machine. The Visual Studio, Platform SDK - Feb-2003 version and Windows Server 2003 DDK were already installed on it in the order as it is written. When I build the a printer driver source code on DDK WinXP build env, the build is successful. But when I try to build the same source code using WDK-WinXP build environment I am getting lots of error. Some of them are- unresolved external symbol __ftol2__sse referenced in function ... LNK2019: unresolved external symbol ___security_cookie referenced in function ... LNK2019: unresolved external symbol __except_handler4 referenced in function ... NMAKE: fatal error U1095: extended command line "set include= <here there is a long string having path> afxwin1.inl (1014):error C4430: missing type specifier - int assumed. When i close the connection (TCP) when the network cable is not there, after I put the cable back, I am not able to ping to any address. The machine is out of network.     - ENUM\USB\xxx entry missing I have a USB device based on a Cypress EZ-USB chip. When it's plugged in, a driver loads, downloads firmware to the device, and disconnects. The firmware then runs and the device reappears on the bus under a different PID. This time in-box HIDdrivers are loaded and we're off to the races. After this is all over, there is an entry for the device under ENUM that looks like this: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\VID_xxxxE&PID_yyyy&MI_00\blahblahblah I believe "blahblahblah" contains information for the system to find the driver the next time the device is plugged in. On four identical Dell Optiplex systems, the device works when plugged in, but not when unplugged and replugged. When I look at the registry, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\VID_xxxxE&PID_yyyy&MI_00 is there, but "blahblahblah" has disappeared. We're not talking about looking in from afar, but an actual device within the room. You could either drill through the wall and shove a pickup through; or you could supply a trojan device with a hidden pickup inside; but most likely, you would have to physically break into your target room to plant a camera. That's not an infeasible option; all it means is having your target(s) watched to make sure they're not in the vicinity, then you negotiate any locks on the property and find a suitable receptacle for your device. The next question is how they defeat the usual methods of counter- surveillance. We had private detectives carry out a "sweep" of every room and the telephone line. They found nothing. That indicates at least four possibilities that I can think of; (this is all guesswork BTW, and probably fanciful guesswork at that!) 1) no bugs (pull the other one) 2) radio-transmitting devices which can be controlled from an external source, ie you can instruct them to switch off when you detect a counter-surveillance sweep taking place 3) hard-wired devices; probe microphones or whatever they're called, things you poke through the wall 4) passive surveillance devices; so you bounce laser or radio waves off a suitable reflecting surface (again, sounds far-fetched but such things may apparently exist). 5) there is a fifth possibility, that the PI's didn't detect an actual transmitting device; there are technologies specifically designed to avoid detection, eg frequency hopping and suchlike. But how much sophistication could you build in to a device which would have to be small enough to be physically concealable? I guess the real question is to find out who is ultimately behind these "goings on".     - XP vs Vista behavior change with USB surprise device removal Howdy everyone, I have noticed a slight change in behavior when doing surprise removal of a USB device on Vista, as compared to XP. On XP, when our USB HW has been physically removed but the device driver has not finished acknowledging the removal(i.e we are still handling the IRP_MN_SURPRISE_REMOVAL), the USB stack will automatically complete new IRPs targeted for the now defunct device with an error. That is, IoCallDriver returns STATUS_NO_SUCH_DEVICE, and the IRP is completed with the same status. The behavior is the same whether the device is directly unplugged, or the external hub that the device is plugged into is unplugged. So far so good. On Vista, the behavior is the same in most cases, except in the case where the HW is physically removed by unplugging the hub from the computer, rather than unplugging the device from the hub. In the hub removal case, the USB stack seems to accept the IRPs, but might never complete them. IoCallDriver returns STATUS_SUCCESS, but the IRP is not completed until explicitly cancelled by our driver. I realize that our driver probably shouldn't depend on the lower drivers automatically rejecting those IRPs, but I'm wondering if this change in behavior is expected? It seems strange that it only behaves this way when the hub is unplugged, and not when the device is unplugged directly, especially considering both cases had the same behavior in XP.     - CPUID in Kernel Giving Unexpected Result I'm struggling to implement Intel VMX functionality via a driver. Part of my VMX set-up is to first determine that the processor supports VMX (CPUID.EAX[01h] -> ECX[bit 5 = 1]. If I run the following code in user space on my Core 2 Duo Extreme I get the correct information (VMX supported). Running the same code in kernel space indicates the machine does not support VMX. Fyi, I linked the asm code into driver via asm generated .obj file.     - Residual registry entries and files after uninstall After uninstalling a USB device driver package, binaries, and all related devices using DIFxApp and DIF_REMOVE SetupDiCallClassInstaller(), I have found that I still have a number of registry entries and files related to the drivers on disk. I initially assumed they were harmless, but recently, one of our testers had a series of BSODs that were completely resolved by manually removing all of the residual files and registry entries. Our conclusion is that somehow, an older version of one of the drivers was being loaded and interacting badly with the others. What I don't know is which, if any, of the removed objects was responsible for the problem. Are any of these worth worrying about and pursuing a way to clean up? Does Microsoft provide any API or automatable tool for cleaning these up?     - blue screen when using ::KsMethod in avstream driver I am developping a virtual AVStream video capture driver following avssamp from DDK. I used ksevent and ksmethod in the driver. The situation is that the driver generate event to notifiy client, and the as the client received the event, it called ::KsMethod. I think IE uses 100 entries for some of its settings subkeys.
