    - Virtual Serial Port: Help getting started? Hello, I apologize in advance if my question(s) seem trivial. This is the first time I've undertaken such a project and if possible I'd like some pointers on where to get started. I have a software application that expects to receive data from a serial port. For example, COM1 (the serial port on the back of the computer) has a device plugged into it that feeds telemetry data into the serial port. The application running on the desktop (or laptop) expects to receive data from this serial port. WHAT I'D LIKE TO DO Basically I'd like to accept the data via 802.11.b rather than the serial interface by presenting a new COM port (let's say COM99) to the software application. So in essence the application believes that COM99 is a serial port however, underneath COM99 is really some type of program (driver) that passes the data through from the 802.11b card and presents the data as if it came from a serial port. Also, vice versa. Any data transmitted by the application should appear as if it were going out the serial port but in reality it is also getting passed through out the 802.11b card. I'm looking for pointers on how to get started. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a copy of Microsoft's XP SP1 DDK and I've been scouring the news groups for information on "Virtual Serial Ports". But I must admit...     - driver keeps receiving IRP_MJ_CREATE, IRP_MJ_CLOSE and IRP_MJ_CLEANUP irps Hi, I have a PNP driver, which creates virtual CDRom devices to emulate ISO images (setup programs) on a harddhisk. It works fine on 2k - loading the CD image and install applications from the CD image (including setup programs containing cab files). However, on XP with the same driver, the CD image is loaded fine, if the setup programs contain cab files, the setup process cannot find the cab files. Comparing debug outputs from the driver on the two OS systems when a CD image is loaded, on XP, the driver keeps receiving IRP_MJ_CREATE, IRP_MJ_CLOSE and IRP_MJ_CLEANUP irps about every minute.     - Windows NT Keyboard Driver question All, I know this is a pretty tall request of a newsgroup, but I have a recent need for a one-handed keyboard. I am not asking you to develop this for me, but rather just to give me some ideas about where to go in beginning a project of this sort. I am a computer programmer, spending most of my development time in MS Visual Studio 6.0 so I am relatively familiar with the windows platform and development on the windows platform in general. I have never written a device driver before, but from the newsgroups, I am guessing I will have to purchase the MSDN Level II DDK. I was thinking the end implementation would be similar to the one handed qwerty keyboard (hardware) you can buy for $1000 at www.half-qwerty.com. I don't have that kind of money in cash, but I do have that kind of money in development time for this project. I know it won't be simple, but I have spent several hours on google groups searching for a similar type process being undertaken and can find nothing on it. Is there anyone here who could even give me an outline on what the process might be, or if it is even possible? If beggers could be choosers, I would also ask how it could be implemented on the lowest level possible, such that whether the device were a USB or PS2 or even Serial keyboard it would all still work, inside of windows.     - Serenum plug & play question I have done a full compatible Virtual Com Port Driver. In final stage of development I try to connect serenum.sys for pnp support. As I see in debug of serenum : it gets pnp string from modem right and then adds AttachedPdo to DEVICE_RELETIONS structure. But nothing happends : no new device, no enum string in registry.     - how to install an updated driver I have a problem with driver updating. I install an old driver for my device on a Win2K machine. Then I unplug the device and run my program to update the driver (it copies the new INF using SetupCopyOEMInf and marks the device for reinstallation as described in the DDK sample code). When I plug the device back, it is re-enumerated by the Hardware Wizard, but the OS reverts back to the old INF (oem1.inf) instead of the new INF (oem2.inf). The ..\system32\drivers directory contains the old SYS file (it is not being updated). I tried deleting the old INF before plugging the device back in: it worked - the device was re-enumerated and the updated SYS file and the co-installer DLL were copied correctly. I am not sure though that it is a good practice to wipe out the old INF from the user's system with my program. How can I tell the OS that it is supposed to use the new INF?     - Possible bug in w2k3? Power button on the case front panel does not work. Pressing the power button leads to mouse cursor being frozen for about a second, then the machine continues running. Changing the function of the power button in Control Panel/Power does nothing. Disabling the shutdown tracker also does nothing. This occurs only on Server 2003. w2k and XP are free from this problem on the same machine. The mobo is Epox D3VA - 2 * Pentium III mobo on VIA Apollo chipset. Yes, this can be a buggy ACPI table in the BIOS, but the function works OK on w2k and XP. In my code, there are many function prototypes that follow this model. void foo (const X &x, const Y &y, const Z &z); I could have used pointers and added "ptr" or simply used pointers with no decoration at all. The above is a little cleaner however. This is the primary reason I use references. They allow me to name things what they are instead of something closely related, while simultaneous providing the efficiency of "pass by reference". Windows device driver naming convention does not follow this model, of course.     - NdisScheduleWorkItem Query I'm calling NdisScheduleWorkItem in a DPC routine to schedule some low priority work but sometimes it appears that my WorkItem is not schedule.     - 1394 sbp2 speed Hi I have a storage device that want to talk to at a speed of 100Mbps. Is there a way that I can control the speed to 1394 devices? I have been looking into the DDK's 1394 samples and done several of hours of googling, but I could not find an answer to this. The driver that I use are the default from win2k SP3: sbp2port.sys -> 1394bus.sys -> ohci1394.sys.     - pcmcia card:: StartDevice Not called after filter resource requirement irp Hi all, OS:-Win98 SE Driver:- Wdm Hardware- 16-bit memory PC Card on Elan's pcmcia adapter(pci-to-pcmcia bridge) I have done a pcmcia win98(wdm) driver for 16 bit memory PCmcia card...and it works fine with Ricoh's pcmcia adapter(pci-to-pcmcia bridge)...I am using LogConfigOverride to make the databus width to 16bit and also overriding the memory and interrupt resource. Problem:- When I try to install the same driver for the same hardware on Elan's pcmcia adapter, the driver gets loaded and proceeds upto IRP_MN_FILTER_RESOURCE_REQUIREMENT and the system hangs up there.. When I pull out the card out of the adapter, now the IRP_MN_START_DEVICE is called, resource allocation is happening and after few seconds, again the driver gets unloaded automatically... Pls note: - This happens only with Elan's pcmcia adapter and with Ricoh's it's working fine..The Elan's pcmcia adapter works fine with our win2k driver on Win2k OS...so the adapter is basically fine.. Can I suspect the driver for the adapter on win98.... Has anybody faced similar problem like this on any other hardware...can somebody let me know what would be the cause of such problem..     - Driver rollback question I have a driver that I'm installing using a program that is called from InstallShield. Nothing too unusual there. It's got a coinstaller to copy language-specific help files and setup OEM-specific registry settings. Again, not too unusual. Our device isn't strictly a All this works fine on Windows XP. But a customer has complained that our setup package doesn't create a driver rollback point (well, of course, the customer complained that you can't roll back our driver, but that seems like the most likely proximate cause). We've been talking with MS support about this, but haven't had too much luck yet. Ultimately, among other things, our inst exe does the pretty much standard step of calling UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices(0, szDeviceID, inf, INSTALLFLAG_FORCE, &m_iResult)). That call is succeeding fine and the driver is installed. However, no rollback point is created. The weird thing is that, in order to *uninstall* our driver we end up calling pretty much the exact same code to reinstall the Microsoft driver for this device. In that situation (of course :-), it creates the roll back point. Ironic and annoying. Does anyone have any experience with this? What's the secret handshake? -- ../ray\..     - resource allocation for a ISA card I wrote a WDM driver for a ISA card. The driver works fine, but I have problems to publish the resources to the system. My aim is that the resouces are visible within the device manager! When I receive a filter request (IRP_MN_FILTER_RESOURCE_REQUIREMENTS) the FilterResourceRequirements substructure points to no valid pointer, I can work on (e.g. alter the list of resources). The smallest period distinguishable by NT system for KeSetTimerEx is 10miliseconds - depending on motherboard clocks. (If I am not mistaken) I have two questions: 1. Consider KeSetTimer function (not KeSetTimerEx to avoid confusing) Second parameter is DueTime - timeout in 100 of nanoseconds. What is the smallest (but really setable) timeout ? On page 286, the sample demonstrates a driver layered at the middle of a driver stack calling IoCancelIrp on an IRP passed from upper driver. I have no problem with the logic in the sample code but I was just wondering the DDK documentation say something about IoCancelIrp: An intermediate driver should not arbitrarily call IoCancelIrp unless that driver created the IRP passed in the call. Otherwise, the intermediate driver might cancel an IRP that some higher-level driver is tracking for purposes of its own. I'm using Windows XP Embedded and my power button is not supported.
I want when somebody press the power button to shut down windows, sound
simple (default behavior of windows) but it's nightmare to do.

XPE have ACPI support, but since windows is less that 60MB support for power
button doesn't exist.
My only hope is to programmatically shut down windows.

Does anybody know how can I read physical state of power button? This is
only what I need.

But for any other info, link I would be grateful.
