    - How to add filter DO on an PDO in a bus filter driver I have an upper bus filter driver, and the filter DO was created and attached to the bus FDO without any problem. But my primary interest is to filter the PDOs created by bus driver. The filter DO above the bus FDO cannot see the IRPs to those PDOs. I think I should create a filter DO and attach it to each PDO created by the bus driver, but I am not sure where to attach my filter DO to the bus created PDO. Normally, AddDevice() is the place to create my filter DO and attach to the driver stack, but when the bus PDO is indicated in query device relation, my AddDevice() will not be called for those PDOs. I tried to create my filter DO and attach to the driver stack in the completion routine for bus FDO query device relation. Most of the PnP IRPs work well, and the upper fucntion driver is loaded as well, but the underlying bus driver failed with STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_REQUEST during handling IRP_MN_START_DEVICE. I ran out of thoughts for reasons of this failure. Anyone may shed any light ? Should I attach to bus created PDO in different place ? One more specific question, should I call ObReference() for my filter DO when I created it in the completion routine for the query device relations, as in the case for regular PDO creaation ? I am pretty certain it is possible, based on the multiple monitors issue (mirror driver does not cause disabling of DirectX, when using multiple monitors).     - Where can I find the color format of source surface in DrvCopyBits function? I'm writing a mirror driver that is able to capture the display of the screen, and send the images to the remote machine through network, and then project them onto the remote screen. just like what netmeeting does. most of display were projected onto the remote screen correctly. But some images weren't. Especially, when I played a video, the clip was projected onto the remote monitor, but colors were change. Let me explain briefly what I have done here. for example, in DrvCopyBits function, I grab the bitmap in the source surface, psoSrc, and send the bitmap to remote machine. I create a DIB bitmap in remote machine, and display it using BitBlt. Now I found that the reason why the color looks changed in remote machine is RGB orders are different between color format of device context of remote machine and that of the bitmap. I really got stuck here. Where can I find the color format of SURFOBJ structure, such as RGB masks? I hope what I wrote won't confuse you. Does any driver masters please give me some suggestion?     - USBD_SHORT_TRANSFER_OK on Isochronous In I'm using the DDK (3790) isousb driver example to check out my high-speed hardware - it generates 1000 byte packets approx every 300uS, so sometimes when it is polled by the PC it has no data ready and so sends a zero-length packet (as req'd by the spec). However the driver doesn't seem to react to these. The USBD_SHORT_TRANSFER_OK flag is not set (in PerformHighSpeedIsochTransfer()), yet the driver just shows occasional zero-length packets received in amongst the 1000-byte packets. I was expecting to see something in urb->UrbIsochronousTransfer.IsoPacket[i].Status, but it is zero for all packets. [I am doing a 8000 byte read request (from the rwiso app), so the IRP is split into a single subsidiary irp/urb, containing 8 packets.] Shouldn't there be an error generated, or have I misunderstood the purpose of this flag?     - USB stack gives misleading indications when Polling Interval not 1 [apologies for the repost; I didn't realise I could post as 'MSDN subscriber'] I am seeing some incorrect indications from the usb stack (XP SP2) when my device indicates a Polling Interval of 2 on its isochronous endpoint: My hardware has a high speed (not high bandwidth) iso In endpoint; it generates fixed size 1000-byte packets at an interval very slightly over 250uS. I have taken the isousb sample from the 3790 DDK, and adapted it to work with my configuration. Because of the data rate, it seemed sensible to increase the polling interval on that endpoint so as to only poll every other microframe, so I set a value of two. However, when I look at the entire buffer from the user-space app there are no gaps - every piece of data *is* there (and correct) from beginning to end - all 24 packets. The return value from the read() call is 12*1000 yet the whole buffer has in fact been written. I've also used SnoopyPro to examine what the stack thinks the packets contain, and diagrammatically (and very much simplified), this is what I'm seeing (with "." indicating a zero-length packet): According to stack Actually in buffer 0 1 2 3 0 1 2 3 . 4 5 6 7 8 9 A B 8 9 A B . C D E F 0 1 2 3 0 1 2 3 etc This is a problem to me because I will occasionally get genuine zero-length packets (due to the data generation being asynchronous to the usb frames), and I need to be able to detect them. The USBD_SHORT_TRANSFER_OK flag is not set. This only happens when the Polling Interval is 2; when it is set to 1 then the behaviour is as expected (albeit interspersed with genuine zero-length packets, generated by the h/w when it is polled but has no data available). I'm running a free build XP SP2, but with checked versions of ntoskrnl, hal, usbport.sys, usbccgp.sys and usbd.sys (also from an SP2 version). Is it a bug in the usb stack? There is a report of this kind of problem - http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=837371 - but although it is dated only a few days ago, it seems to be saying that the issue is fixed in SP2; and I have newer versions of all the files indicated (though why don't I have usbccgp.sys - isn't that needed for composite devices??) [I'm having trouble with my Win2K installation at the moment, so I've not had a chance to compare]. In fact, as I repeat the test today to check my results (before hitting "Send"), I'm *also* now seeing an additional effect: a packet with a length of 1000, but contents all zero - but, again, without any loss of data - where there *is* data in the buffer it is continous and valid (the data stream contains a count to help spot discontinuities). What with the results I was seeing yesterday plus this additional weirdness I'm now seeing, I'm wondering if there are still issues with non-one values of polling interval? Anyone got any thoughts? Ok! lets say that you can just use 2 GB with any user application , fine. If i write a kernel mode code which can access user and as well as kernel space then it should be able to take care of 4 GB. But why Microsoft guys are just saying NO for big allocations? It might be possible that lack of addressing flat memory is due to other than OS itself like TLB , HW cache , VM manager architecture etc.. 1) Say Windows 32 bit OS for intel architecture. 0) Kernel space = 2 1) User space = 2 Total process space = 4 GB. User mode App. = You have just 2 GB to move around , you keep you data, routines and string for file mapping here. Kernel mode code = Ok here you can move around 3 GB. You can see that our system is consuming min 1 GB [PCB , stack etc.] in both cases. So we can see that system is spoiling 4 GB [ one process] for every four processes;-) that is what i'm thinking.     - Programmatic USB device eject I have a USB MSC device for which I've written a desktop application that can eject the device similar to using the Unplug or Eject Hardware utility. Currently, my code calls CM_Request_Device_Eject to cleanly eject the device. However, the device does not sense that it has been disconnected. If I call DeviceIoControl with IOCTL_STORAGE_EJECT_MEDIA, the device does sense that it was ejected but I also get the Unsafe Removal of Hardware dialog under Windows 2000. Is there a correct method to cleanly stop the device and have it sense that it has been disconnected under Windows 2000 and XP (no support needed for older OSs). Thanks.     - Run unsigned PnP drivers by users without administrative rights I have been trough a lot of documentation, but I haven't got a good solution to this problem. We need to run unsigned PnP drivers, by users without administrative privileges. This has to be done silently without dialogs. We have tested the drivers and found them ok in our systems. Actually most of them are drivers included in the Windows XP, but with INF-files for additional hardware. We have also made packages of the driver installations, so that everything is in place. We have no control over when the devices are used for first time, but the device should just work when activated. Everything work ok except that the users get the "found new hardware" dialog and is prompted for an administrator account. Is there any way to get around this? We have full control over the driver files and the users have no access to change or remove the files. The computer and user accounts are also fully controllable with GPO's. Some white papers mention the use of "trusted path" but I can't figure out how and I assume that is referred to when an unattended installation is done. I also read something about using a local certificate. I couldn't find more info about that either. Any suggestions?     - Keyboard FIlter Driver for Belking n52 on x64? The Belkin n52's a great device, but Belkin doesn't want to update thei software for x64, leaving us with a gamepad that maps to the left-mos side of the keyboard, as well as a second mouse. Sure, you could rema keys with a standard remapper, but that'd affect the regular keyboard a well. Has anyone written a remapper that can map a *specific* keyboar attached to a USB port? (and, perhaps, the secondary mouse) Bonus points if it can map to a script or other sequence of keyboar events, mouse events, and waits. If not, I've downloaded the DDK, but don't quite know where to begin. My background's in distributed software, not device drivers, though th examples *look* like they should be easy enough.     - Multiple terminal sessions, events not seen by all. I've got an multiple copies of an app running in multiple terminal sessions In the user mode, I've created an event (CreateEvent, manual reset) and I pass this off to a kernel driver. In the kernel, I do KeSetEvent, and then KeClearEvent right away to clear it. I am expecting that all the sessions , which I know are all waiting on the event, would see the signal. This is not the case. The signal is seen only by one session. And it does not matter which is the active session, it is only seen by the last session that created the event .     - AV Stream renderer Hi All, The situation: I wrote a virtual filter-centric AV Stream renderer and it works fine in the graphedit - I feed it from the WM ASF reader; I can see arriving frames in my Process callback- the renderer swallows them by setting BytesUsed = BytesAvailable - everything is ok, But when I access this renderer by the waveOutOpen function and as soon as I submit the only buffer by the waveOutWrite function, my Process callback is called in endless loop, it seems like the same frame is delivered again and again and again.     - Memory leak with my virtual printer driver from genprint I had compiled the C:\WINDDK\2600.1106\src\print\genprint sourse code and made virtual printer driver which gives me spl files in emf format. It works perfectly when i try to print to it from MS word or Notepad. But one of our other programs when written to this drirver acted bit differantly.     - Device stack reordering when driver is reloaded Hi, On my system, my vendor (IBM) preinstalls a filter driver (IBM Active PCI a.k.a. ibmhpf.sys) that sits between the PCI bus and PCI device drivers (such as mine). It manages some IBM-specific PCI hotplug functionality and should be "transparent" to PCI device drivers. My device driver is not aware of this filter and continues to work as usual. However, after I reload my driver (Disable+Enable in the Device Manager), it would no longer operate normally, getting null MDLs in its DispatchRead routine. As you know, there can be two reasons for getting null MDLs: 1. Not having DO_DIRECT_IO in your DEVICE_OBJECT's Flags. (Obviously I always had this flag set.) 2. Passing a zero-sized buffer to ReadFile. (I don't do this.) Inspecting my device with Walter Oney's DevView revealed the reason: while my FDO has DO_DIRECT_IO in its flags, IBM's FiDO does not -- and IBM's FiDO has relocated from being between my FDO and the PCI bus, to be *on top* of my FDO! What can cause this FiDO (whose source code I obviously don't have) to be inserted at the right place on system startup, but at the wrong place on subsequent reload of my driver?     - Extra Processing on CompletionRoutine Hi everyone I'm writing a filter driver for a device, which I install a completion routine so that I could do extra processing after the IRP has been processed by the lower driver. AFAIK, I've got two options for my CompletionRoutine 1. Do whatever I need to do inside the CompletionRoutine, then return with STATUS_SUCCESS. 2. Queue a work item, which will later call IoCompleteReturn, and then return STATUS_MORE_PROCESSING_REQUIRED. I've tried successfully with method 1 (which is simpler). However, I'm not sure if that's safe, since sometime my processing could take up 1-2 seconds to do. Could anyone tell in which case should i use the 1st method, and which case should I use the 2nd one? And the IRP being processed inside my CompletionRoutine will never be canceled by anyone, right? Another question, assuming that the lower driver completes the IRPs in its work queue (PASSIVE_LEVEL) most of the time, am I safe to say that my CompletionRoutine would be called in PASSIVE_LEVEL most of the time too, or is it system dependent?     - IoQueueWorkItem accessing flag or return value? Hi folks, I am writing a custom kernel device driver that calls the RtlCheckRegistryKey to check the registry for a value on every keystroke. Basically I created a call-back function thread using the IoQueueWorkItem to get the RtlCheckRegistryKey to be ran at PASSIVE_LEVEL. I pass down a struct to the IoQueueWorkItem routine (IN PDEVICE_OBJECT DeviceObject, IN OUT strQueuedWorkItem *Context) That contains pIOWorkItem and certain flags etc. When the RtlCheckRegistryKey value is called I need to set a flag in the struct to say registryChecked. My problem is that I cant seem to get access to this structure and the set flag after it has been passed to the call-back routine even though I am passing the struct by pointer? I code in pascal but the C version of devio I'm using would be I think ... DeviceIoControl(handle, IOCTL_STORAGE_RESET_DEVICE, NULL, 0, NULL, 0, &returned, NULL); ... devio returns an "incorrect function" error. The parameters are per MS as far as I can tell. Installation program does something like this: 1) snetcfg.exe -l .\shimmer.inf -c s -i no_shimmer followed by 2) install.exe netvpntp.inf *no_vpntp Those two programs were checked-into code base and compiled as part of the build. I don't know if they were customized or not. Now, when I try to run those commands from command line, snetcfg.exe crashes and install.exe fails.     - USB drivers oddity on Win2K This is strange, and I'm wondering if it's something I've done. We have a USB composite device that has two endpoints, one of which is used as a debug channel and one which is a mass storage interface. The mass storage interface works just fine.. however.. When our system (Windows 2000) crashes, it sometimes forgets that it needs the "USB Composite Device" driver and we have to manually reinstall it! This is somewhat tedious and painful, as you might expect, since it looks like that driver has to be reinstalled for each port that we're putting one of these devices on (ugh). I've looked over our debug interface driver code and I can't find anything that would cause Win2K to decide it doesn't need the composite interface any longer. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Does WinXP handle composite devices better? Are there any known issues with composite USB devices under Win2K?     - UNIDRV Banding Line Count error? Hello, I've got a rendering plugin with ImageProcessing doing RGB24 to CMYK custom halftoning. (That is, DevNumPlanes = 4, DevBPP = 1, DrvBPP= 24.) The conversion itself works fine, *except*: when UNIDRV is doing banding, if the last band is shorter than the previous bands, the difference (in lines) is added to the print as garbage raster data. E.G: for a 3300 line Letter page: ImageProcessing reports 4 x bands of 664 lines, then one of 644. What is printed is the 3300 lines expected, plus (664 - 644 =)20 lines of garbage. For a 3750 line page: ImageProcessing reports 4 x bands of 752 lines, then one of 742. The expected 3750 lines print, plus 10 lines (752 - 742) of garbage. It *looks* like when Unidrv splits the page into bands, it's not tracking the actual count when passing the bands to Output. Comments? Suggestions?? All seems to be working well, except that the miniport drops packets if it receives more that about 3000/second. I have implemented a receive buffer in the miniport and it is clear that the miniport receive all the packets from the above protocols and queue them accordingly but the IOCTL interface seems to be to slow to handle all of the packets, so the queue overflows.     - Driver design thoughts Yes, I'm a driver newbie... We have an open source kernel driver that needs accurate and high-resolution timestamps in order to stamp communication packets. Then, we have an external reference clock producing these timestamps. The problem is to forward these timestamps to the driver. My plan is to write a new driver that interfaces the clock (with serial based protocol) and exports a method for the existing driver in order to request timestamps when needed. This way the existing driver would stay as intact as possible. Does this sound reasonable to you?
