    - how to create a MIDI port? Hello, I am brand new to writing device drivers. I want to create a MIDI port (or a pair, for bi-di comms) and put a data stream on it that is originating from another source (a serial port). From what I have gathered so far, I need to write a user-mode filter driver and insert it into the MIDI stack. Can someone verify for me that this is the correct approach?     - Isochronous pipe usage in USB drivers I am trying to send the SCO(Audio) data over USB. I am using Isochronous End points of the Bluetooth Dongle for doing that. I have a Reader thread in Client driver which initiates the Isoc Read operation. The problem that iam facing is: When the Isoc read is started for the first time. The device is sending back DATA0 packet of Zero length always. So Read thread is so busy that it is stopping the Device configuration , initialization which is done by client driver.     - Windows 2000 and Win XP compatible driver Hi, I am currently developing a USB driver that should support win2k and winxp. My questions is if i have to create two different drivers built with the OS specific include directories in the DDK. Or can i choose for example to use all includes from xp directories and then run that driver on win2k as well without any worries.     - Problem in recognizing selected paper Hi All, I am working on development of printer driver for windows-Xp platform using PCL5e emulation. In this driver â??Letterâ?? paper is made as default. This default information (along with some other information in devmode) is saved in system registry during â??DrvPrinterEvent()â??. Later during â??DrvDeviceCapabilities()â?? application comes to know about the standard papers and their sizes supported by this driver. Paper sizes are mentioned in one tenth of millimeter.(as given in windgi.h header file) The problem is, after installing the driver, if I select â??A4â?? paper size from Page Set Up dialog box, (from Ms-Word), the application is recognizing it as â??Letterâ?? (which is default paper size in the driver).I mean to say application is not sending the desired paper size (DMPAPER_ prefixed constant) to the driver. Suppose if I make â??A4â?? as default paper supported by driver, then â??Letterâ?? paper selected from Page Set UP dialog box (from Ms-Word) is recognized as â??A4â??. Application is sending correct paper size to driver for all other paper sizes. This problem occurs only in Ms-word. All other application such as Ms-Exel and Notepad are recognizing the papers correctly and sending the correct paper size (DMPAPER_ prefixed constant) information to the driver. I have a transport protocol in TDI and I also provide Winsock Transport Service for this protocol with winsock helper DLL. I am using AF_UNSPEC for Address Family for this protocol at this time as there is no suitable address family in the current definition in winsock2.h. And I see that Address families are added by Microsoft when a new family is introduced. Do I have to register to Microsoft to register our Address family to avoid using AF_UNSPEC?     - IoBuffer Causing Freeze Hey There, If buffered I/O is being used and the Parameters.DeviceIoControl.OutputBufferLength is > 0 while Parameters.DeviceIoControl.InputBufferLength equals 0, the data should be in AssociatedIrp.SystemBuffer. I create a variable IoBuffer that equals AssociatedIrp.SystemBuffer and try to read the data in IoBuffer. When this is executed, it generates a 0XC0000005 error, which is an Access Violation Error.     - 1394 OHCI Port Driver API Hi all, Currently I am looking for an API that gives me access to the LLC and PHY registers on my 1394 board. I need this because I want to be able to read the type/version information from these chips since some work better than others. It seems that there is no such functionality in the 1394.h headerfile that ships with the DDK. I have done such a thing before, but then I did it the hard (and ugly?) way: - scan the PCI bus for the 1394 board - Use the PCI interface to access the LLC chip. - Access the PHY trough the LLC chip. I think this is not really thread safe because I have to set the page registers in the PHY, which can be altered in between by the port driver.     - 64 Bit CoInstaller Moin, does the co-installer for a x64 bit driver package need to be native 64 bit or does the 32 bit co-installer work as well ? Install printerdriver 3. install the printprocessor 4 Install the virtual printer Everything is fine, but the 4.step fails. I'm looking for a function that converts a Device Name into an Dos name.     - Filter Hook Hi, Drivers are very new to me, can someone help me with the next issue please: I have tried to set up a Filter Hook driver. I took an example code from codeproject (DrvFltIp) and it works ok on my computer (Windows XP). When I try to process the packets more thoroughly than in this example code, my computer crashed (freezes or restarts immediately). The crash happens when I do something that involves a KeWaitForSingleObject or a KeDelayExecutionThread call (but I am not sure these are the only scenarios that cause a crash). I looked in the dump file with WinDbg after the crash and saw that one of the last actions of the kernel were sending an interrupt and afterwards an exception. So my guess was that the kernel is sending a trap that was sent to it by the hardware to my driver to handle, but since I didn't set up an interrupt call back function, an exception is raised. The next thing I did was to try and set up an interrupt call back function, but this also caused a similar crash to the system (when I tried to pull out the parameters that I have to pass to the function "IoConnectInterrupt" from the isrStack). I tried to call the function "IoConnectInterrupt" from the function "DriverObject->MajorFunction[IRP_MJ_CREATE]" when got "IRP_MJ_CREATE" in "irpStack->MajorFunction" or when I got "IRP_MN_START_DEVICE IRP" in "irpStack->MinorFunction". When I tried even to access the parameter "irpStack->Parameters->StartDevice.AllocatedResourcesTranslated->Count" (even without calling "IoConnectInterrupt") it caused a crash.     - Error Reading from Io Hey there, I most of the code of my simple driver that I am writing working, with one exception. In the code below, when I uncomment the DbgPrint statement that is commented out (the one that says "DbgPrint("IoBuffer[%d]=%02x\n",i,(ULONG)IoBuffer[i]);" ) and put it into the for loop, the machine freezes, but when take it out, everything works fine. Any ideas as to why this is occurring? Thanks!     - non-hardware driver? If I have a WDM kernel driver that I want to load that has no hardware associated with it (no PCI vendor/device ID), how do I get it to load? Under the 'old' model, I would make a DriverEntry() and call net start after modifying the registry appropriately. I don't see how to do that with WDM. 1.     - Can't get stream point when attached two devices into a usb hub Hi all, I encountered this issue when I attached two usb dvbt devices into my pc by one usb hub. I called KsPinGetLeadingEdgeStreamPointer in a system thread. Just after run the graph, KsPinGetLeadingEdgeStreamPointer could return stream pointer, but some seconds later, it always returned NULL. When I attached the two device into the pc directly(no through usb hub), it could work well. I have no idea about this issue. Is there a way to get the PCI bus, device, and function number for a device that works even when Windows has been localized to another language? I'm getting SPDRP_LOCATION_INFORMATION with the SetupDi functions and on an English system I get a string like "PCI bus 0, device 31, function 1" and I'm able to parse out the info. But if I'm running on the Japanese version of Windows XP, that string is in Japanese so the parsing fails. I can look for numeric digits and parse those in order, but that's a hack and I'm not sure if it will work on all languages since the string could be re-ordered. I looked around at the other SPDRP_* properties, but nothing seemed to contain the PCI bus, device, and function numbers. Is there some other way to do this?     - IRQL He11 I am currently modifying a driver we use internally that interfaces with a PCI board. We are adding a DMA capability to the board where we can DMA data to and from specific memory regions, that is working correctly and I get interrupts and get into my DpcForIsr, etc, BUT what I need to do when I get data from the DMA is write it out to a file. Now, I know that in my Dpc I can't call ZwWriteFile to write out to my file that I opened previously, so I wrote code to setup a work item to do it for me. I am trying to copy the data from the NonPagedPool physical memory that the DMA is going into to another buffer that the work item can use to write to the file. I am having major issues because obviously RtlCopyMemory can't be called in the Dpc either because the IRQL is wrong. I tried getting an MDL and locking the pages in memory so they are resident before calling RtlCopyMemory, but I am having a heck of a time.     - pci bus discovery According to white papers when the bus driver pci.sys discovers a bridge device, it will determine if the device is initialized and if not, it will assign the default values to the secondary interface of 64MB Memory, 64MB Pre-Fetch and 4K IO (assuming the upstream device has enough available as well.) What I have never heard is how pci.sys determines whether to assign the default values or not. I had initially assumed it was looking at the Command register (offset 0x04). I had initial success with experimentation on this assumption, but I have recently discovered the following cases: 1. The Command register is set and resources appear to be assigned by the BIOS, but pci.sys assigns new resources to the default values. 2. The command register is 0, but pci.sys does not assign resources to the secondary interface, it sets the command register and leaves the rest of the configuration space alone. In the former case the problem must be in the BIOS. The latter case was discovered while testing hot-plugging on a PCI-Express device so the problem is most likely in the device's EEPROM. The latter case was also seen in both XP and Vista. Knowing what pci.sys is doing here would be helpful to anyone developing devices with bridges, or writing the BIOS/UEFI. I was testing my device stack with pnpdtest.exe (from the vista beta
DDK) and it worked fine until I got to the double start test. The test
was complaining that the second start IRP it sent me did not complete
with success. Is this a valid test? I thought that the correct
behaviour of a driver was to fail the second start IRP if the device
was already started...

Also, is there a real world case in which a driver could get back to
back start IRPs?

PNP manager sends a start request (IRP_MN_START_DEVICE) after the device is
started only if a function driver (or any driver in charge of the device) in
the device-stack invalidates the device-state by calling
IoInvalidateDeviceState and responds to IRP_MN_QUERY_DEVICE_STATE with
PNP_DEVICE_RESOURCE_REQUIREMENTS_CHANGED.

The pnp manager will never do Start->Start to rebalance resources. It will
always stop the device first before restarting it. So the double start
sequence should be tested only if your driver wants to support such an
operation for any reason.

This is not a required test for logo. In fact, this option is already
removed from the pnpdtest UI. The command line option is still there just in
case the driver wants to support this sequence.
