    - Mempry Mapping I am currently developing a PCI camera driver for Windows CE 5.0 on an AMD Geode GX2 processor. I used ceddk to enumerate the PCI devices and was able to find a match for the PID and VID, I was even able to read the configuration space.     - How to put real device object into control object's device extensi Hi, I have win32 app and PS/2 keyboard filter driver. I can successfully pass IOCTL from the app to the driver. I can see that IOCTL inside my IRP_MJ_DEVICE_CONTROL function and can also set global flags.     - accessing physical address instead of virtual address I need to increase the performance of the driver I wrote, and to do that, I need to write data directly to the physical address of the pci device we are using. I have already tried, in assembly, to write data to the virtual address of the device, which was mapped with MmMapIoSpace. It worked fine, but when I change the virtual address with the physical address, I get the Blue screen. The routine to write is basically esi <- buffer edi <- virtual add movsd inside a for loop (just testing). I heard that in order to write directly to the physical address, I need to elevate the driver to be "real kernel" level, and not only "windows kernel" level, where I cannot access the physical memory. Each devices has multiple layer, and each layer's capable data rate can be different. For example, My product(Digital Camcorder) has PHY, LINK and 61883 Layer and each layer's capable iso data rate is following. - PHY : 400Mbps - LINK : 400Mbps - 61883 : 100Mbps (It complemented on IMPR(Input Master Plug Register)) When device is connected to PC(xp), PC read the three speed register. But, windows xp(without no servicepack) send ISO data to device at 400Mbps I expected windows xp will determine minimum data rate what device's layerhas. So I did same test on window xp with servicepack 1, and 2 then, PC use 100Mbps. Finally, my question is following. 1. Why windows xp(without any servicepack) use 400Mpbs to device witch has 100Mbps setting on 61883 IMPR? 2. What is the xp's rule to determine ISO data rate to device. 3.     - Increase Non-Paged Pool Memory I have a 512 MB system, system default allocation: NonPagedPool Max: 32768 ( 131072 Kb) PagedPool Maximum: 43008 ( 172032 Kb) My driver mainly uses Non-Paged pool for memory allocation. With certain settings, driver run out of Non-Page Pool memory. I tried in registry ( NonPagedPoolSize ) but I did not see any change ( after next reboot ).     - DrvTextOut/DrvSendPage part 2 Hi, Earlier I left a post about my printer driver sometimes getting a call to DrvSendPage in the middle of processing a call to DrvTextOut. I was somewhat starting to blame MS-OFFICE applications, but this appears to be just something the spooler does, since I can duplicate this just with a call to EndDocPrinter or EndDoc in my own printing application. The problem is that my driver is in the middle of DrvTextOut and suddenly I see a call to DrvSendPage even though I have not yet returned from DrvTextOut. This may be a clue, but I don't know how to interpret it: When I had "DebugBreak()" as the second line to DrvTextOut (first line is a call to OutputDebugString), it never gets executed, DrvSendPage gets called at that point.     - Kernel Object Security Hi Although I am not writing kernel mode code, I do have some questions that I think will be best answered in this forum. Two questions, possibly should be posted sperately. 1. I have user mode code (a C API, DLL) to which I have recently added (NtXxxx) functions for locating the presence of named mutex objects (identied by a naming convention). I thus have functions which allow me to iterate and see what Mutexes are currently in use by my application, and this is used to drive GUI functionality by various tools. My question is there a down side, is there a risk in calling these functions: NtOpenDirectoryObject NtQueryDirectoryObject ? 2. Unrelated, well not directly related. We have code that creates and manages various Mutexes etc obviously for managing concurrency accross processes in our software. Recently I began looking into getting the code to work in a multiple process setup where those processes are logged in differently (ie IIS may be one, an interactive Administrator might be another). If the IIS app (using our library funcs) creates a Mutex, then of course the Administrator running the admin tool, get ACCESS_DENIED and cannot access/use the Mutex. So my question is: what is the minimum I need to do to enable the Mutex to be freely accessible to all processes? Also what "sensible" options are there for me to control security, I mean would it make sense to allow the Mutex creator to do something like this: a. Grant read/wrirte access to all other users/processes b. Grant read/write access to any user within a specified group (ie Administarors) c. Grant read/write access to one or more specific users-group combinations? If so can anyone point me at a good web resource for getting down to the coding of all this? I read up in security and object access in the book "Inside Windows NT" but it was a summary rather than an example based explanation.     - looking for guidance and suggestions Hi everyone, I would like to use moufiltr to accomplish the following task. After user presses a button (say right button), the filter driver starts to generate (fake) mouse movement data (say moving the cursor along a closed square loop). It's not difficult to detect the button and add cursor movement data in moufiltr, the difficult is how to send these data in a steady stream (roughly a few packets per second) endlessly UNTIL the user presses a button (or moves the mouse) OR for certain period of time.     - temporarly power down disk drive ASAP I work for an OEM of a tablet PC, we want to do something simalar to IBM's 'Active Protection system', where they use an acceloromitor to detect when the tablet is dropped and shutdown the hard drive. In looking through the DDK documantation I'm at a loss as to where to start, I though about writing a HD filter driver and when needed sending a shutdown packet to the hard disk driver but then how do I keep the rest of the system from bringing it back up too soon? If I don't explicitly tell to compiler where it should place my code, it will place it into pageable or non-pageable section? I saw something like this in Oney's book: #pragma alloc_text( PAGE, DispatchPnp) So, If I add my own function, will I have to somehow mark its placement or it is done automaticaly in some predictable way (e.g. if I don't say anything else, it will be placed into nonpaged memory)?     - PrintProcessor Linking fails Hello Newsgroup! I am new to building drivers. My project is to develop an accounting print processor for PostScript print drivers. In my opinion it is the best way to account the job in the print processor where the data goes to printer port. Is there a better way? I am modifying the src\print\genprint\raw.c file in the loop where we are sending the data. I'm trying to read in the data stream for PS EndPage commands. For this a wanted to do some debugging output, so i wanted to write it in a file. fopen(), fwrite() and so on. I have included the <stdio.h> and the compiling is fine.     - AVStream driver performs differently under WinXP and Win2K. Hi all, I have developed a USB camera driver based on AVStream. So far, the driver works fine under WinXP platform. The problem occurs when testing the driver under Win2K (installed with DirectX 9.0c). I have tested with 2 cameras, one of them managed to stream video, but at a much lower frame rate (i.e. 1 fps, as compare to 15-30 fps under WinXP); whereas the other one failed to stream at all, and found that it failed when trying to retrieve the USB descriptor.     - Checked build Hi All, In MSDN, it is said that we require checked build version of operating system to test and debug the driver. By making changes in boot.ini(/debug) i was able to boot the system in checked buid(windows XP). But i found no difference between checked and release build as both of them takes same time to load. But in MSDN it is said that checked build will take long time to boot as compared to release build. does it mean that checked build can not be made just by chaning the boot.ini and i need to install the checked build operating system?If so,how do i install the checed build? As i did not find the checked build OS(XP) in the opeating system installation CDs. Would of great help if anyone could guide me how to proceed.     - Setting Driver Signing policy programatically Hi Ive read through the other posts and MS KB articles related to the setting of the driver signing policy. I cant determine if there is any way of setting this policy as we require. We have a large number of PCs (with no KB and no monitor) in remote, often non-networked environments. All installations at the sites must be unattended (bar insertion of a CD and pressing a proprietry interface button). These machines have a large range of periphial devices attached. Some of the devices are proprietary (and have signed drivers), others are from 3rd parties (and are both signed and unsigned). Historically we have installed all the SW on these machines from scratch each time we need to install anything (even a single msi). We have been able to do this by setting the driver signing policy in either unattend.txt (for standard installs) or sysprep.inf (for sysprep'd drive images). We are now in an XP Pro SP2 environment and have a need to (occasionally) install unsigned drivers after an initial installation has been completed. This can occur days or months after the initial deployment. For example, a new device is plugged into the unit and we need to install the SW / drivers for just that device. We were previously able to set the driver signing policy using the regsitry or rather we used SECEDIT and GPUPATE. As the machines are often not on a domain (or even networked) setting the domain policy is not an option; we need to set it locally. The customers who own the units are not prepared to have driver signing permanently switched off. If SECEDIT or GPUPDATE are used now (to either set the policy to "ignore" or to "block", then we get the error logged in setupapi.log (as described in 298503). "Permachine codesigning policy settings appear to have been tampered with. Error 13. The Data is invalid" Default of 1 restored to policy. This appears to indicate that we cant set the policy to "block" or "ignore" it will always go to "warn" if you try to programatically set it. Whilst I understand the reasons for tightening up on this setting we have a definite need to bypass this standard security for our business. For new devices and our own devices we now insist on signed drivers. We are still left (for now) with many legacy devices with unsigned drivers. The only solution I have just now is to spy for the warning windows and fire keypresses at the dialogs. Obviously this is less than ideal. Any help or comments appreciated.     - Programming style... originated in the java corner, i have some difficulties to adapt the programming style used in the platform sdk and the ddk. therefore i'd like to know what you think about the way i handled some things. 1) device interface GUIDs not defined in a global header: i tried to find the GUID of disc type devices which are part of the mass storage device group. because i didn't find any, i looked up the GUID value stored in my registry and defined it in my app. is this a bad habit or can i assume that this GUID never changes in further versions of ms win? 2) error checking: SetupDiGetClassDevs and many other functions return a specific value if they fail. so should i check for failure although such case is impossible? e.g. SetupDiGetClassDevs with GUID_DEVINTERFACE_VOLUME should never fail. i ask because useless failure checks make the code unreadable.     - Renaming a file The FILE_RENAME_INFORMATION structure has a RootDirectory field that may be non-NULL RootDirectory If the file is not being moved to a different directory, or if the FileName member contains the full pathname, this member is NULL. Otherwise, it is a handle for the root directory under which the file will reside after it is renamed. However, my testing so far has failed to create a non-NULL RootDirectory. I'd like to test my code that will handle this case, but I've not been able to create one . On NTFS file systems: Moving files between Directories with DOS does not do it. Moving files with Explorer does not do this. Rename from DOS does not support moving files between Directorys. Product: Luminous III Manufacturere: Sharkoon in Germany Please look at: http://www.sharkoon.com/enghtml/input.htm#key3 When I press the new function button "Fn" together with F11 the keyboard is locked so nobody can use it until i unlock it with the same keys. Using the media player i can increase and decrease volume using FN and F9 / F10. What i now like to do is writing a new driver / an extension so i can decide what to do when a shortcut like the two obove is pressed. The reason why i want to do this is, that there's no existing driver i know i can use. I read some articles in the MSDN but i need some examples.     - Formatted ramdisk Friday, May 27, 2005 Hi, I have modified the ramdisk sample driver to map a reserved memory (Booit.ini /burmemory=128). I also saved a NTFS formatted disk image file that I load during the initialization of my driver so I do not have to format the 128 MB ramdisk every time Windows boots. This works fine on Windows NT, 2000, 2000 SP1,2,3. When I installed the driver in Windows 2000 SP4, Windows prompts me to format the disk even after my driver loaded the formatted disk image. I can format the ramdisk (NTFS) successfully. However I do not want to format the ramdisk manually after every boot. Why Windows 2000 SP4 does not recognize that the disk is already formatted?     - Unknown Manufacturer Unsuported Device Driver Type XP Pro SP2 I have previously used the above device type to provide support for Minolta Dimage Scan Dual Film Scanner, once installed as this device type the associated software can find and use the scanner, I have done this many times on Intel based machines under W2K and XP Pro & XP Pro SP2 I have recently purchased and AMD64 based machine and installed XP Pro and the driver type no longer exists, it is also missing after installing SP2, is this device type only available on intel based PCs or has it been withdrawn form current XP distributions ?     - How to make sure a Service starts BEFORE a user logs on? Hi: I have a regular Windows Service program (not a kernel driver) which must start BEFORE a user logs into his machine (XP or W2K). It works most of the time, but sometimes, I noticed that it started AFTER I log on the machine; especially if I logged in the machine fast right after a reboot. Is there a way in the service program, I can do something to make sure that, after reboot, the service starts before a user logs in the machine (no matter how fast the user is trying to complete his logon process)?     - Serious problem with IO manager and device removal Hi All Scenario: i)PnP NIC PcCard USB driver with an IO manager interface created with NdisMRegisterDevice(). ii)Application opens device with CreateFile() and gets a valid handle. iii) Stop NIC driver with Safely Remove Hardware. (Driver Halt function gets called and devext is freed) iv) Application calls DeviceIoControl() on the STILL VALID HANDLE. v) NIC driver image stil in memory, so IOCTL handler called which refgerences the now invalid devext. vi) CRASH. Now, to quote the DDK: "Note that, if a handle to the device object created with NdisMRegisterDevice is open, the driver that created the device object cannot be unloaded." Oh yeah, even NdisMDeregisterDevice() returns 0 if an application still has the handle open. And further: "Before opening a handle to the device object, a user-mode application should therefore register for device event notification, specifying GUID_NDIS_LAN_CLASS as the interface class GUID. On receiving a DBT_DEVICEQUERYREMOVE device event for the device object, the application should close the handle" So it is up to the good behaviour of an application to controlll wether the kernel crashes or not. Hmmm not a very good idea. I suggest the IO manager returns INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE if the device got unloaded and an app calls an IO manager function on it.     - Trying to get an IM filter driver to bind to my IM MUX driver at install time Hi, I've got an NDIS IM MUX driver, which is based on the MUX sample in the W2k3 DDK. I'm trying to get an IM filter driver to bind to this, at *install time*. This filter driver is bound to the physical miniport before install (along with TCPIP, MS Client, File & Printer sharing). I've built the MUX notifyob with "DISABLE_PROTOCOLS_TO_PHYSICAL" defined, so ideally, i would expect that after the install, all the protocols that were bound to the physical NIC should now be bound to the MUX miniport. Unfortunately, the filter driver is not bound to it (incidentally, neither is the nlbs driver). I can bind the filter driver after the install, manually from the UI, by checking the box on the MUX miniport, so there isnt anything in the NDIS upperRange or lowerRange to prevent the binding from happening. I've stepped through the notifyobject in the debugger (from breakpoints in SysQueryBindingPath, and NotifyBindingPath) to see if the notifyob ever even got the binding paths with the filter driver in it. I didnt see any. The filter driver's protocol inf has the following interesting lines: 1. [ndi] Characteristics = 0x4490 ; NCF_NDIS_PROTOCOL | NCF_HAS_UI | NCF_FILTER | NCF_NO_SERVICE 2. [AddReg] HKR, Ndi, FilterClass, , failover HKR, Ndi\Interfaces, UpperRange, , noupper HKR, Ndi\Interfaces, LowerRange, , nolower HKR, Ndi\Interfaces, FilterMediaTypes, , "ethernet, nolower" Why isnt the filter drivers binding paths showing up in the notifyob methods ? Alternatively, is there any other way to programmatically bind the filter driver to the MUX driver ? All I want to do is take the individual scan lines and pass them to an existing DLL that then does some processing. I can't seem to get the FilterGraphics method to get called. My driver defines fonts that are resident in the printer. Most of the time, the driver works fine using MS-Word and selecting the printer fonts. However, occasionally, the page is terminated too soon. I have narrowed it down to where my DrvTextOut is interrupted (has not hit the return statement yet) by a call to my DrvSendPage (same PDev too). This seems to happen totally random. How can this happen? What should my driver do in this case? It seems like a bug with MS-Office, but I've never heard of it. Any ideas? Please? I'm getting deperate.     - How do I determine modem type? Hi, If I'm looking at modem entries in the registry (class "Modem"), how can I determine the modem's physical connection to the system? For example, how can I tell if a specific modem is connected through PCI, USB, IR, Bluetooth, etc.? I noticed that the "MatchingDeviceId" value (SPDRP_HARDWAREID) usually has the correct type in it, but a few modems seem to be misleading. For example, I have a PCMCIA modem that seems to think its a USB device (apparently it implements a USB hub inside the card, but its not available externally).     - USB Video Capture frame rate drop after Standby/Wake-up cycle Our USB Video Capture device running on XP on USB 2.0 runs at 30 fps. However, if we put the system into Standby mode while capturing a video (either capturing to file or simple video preview) then when the system awakes the video capture resumes but at a frame rate which now fluctuates around 24fps and goes as low as as 22 fps. It is visibly slower - not just a quirk in frame-rate reporting. This reduction in frame rate is not cumulative. i.e. if we repeatedly go into Standby mode and reawaken it remains at around 24fps. The framerate can be is restored to 30fps by simply stopping and restarting the video capture application. The problem does not occur if we attach our device on a USB 1.1 port; the framerate then remains constant through Standby/Wake-up cycles. We have tried to test this on other vendor's USB video capture devices to determine if it is a problem in our drivers but to date have not yet found one that can survive running an application through a Standby/Wake-up cycle without other, far more serious problems. I made a little app which uses WMI and Setup Api to find wireless network card. Unfortunately I do not know how to SET OID_802_11_BSSID_LIST_SCAN oid. Passing it to DeviceIoControl with IOCT_QUERY_GLOBAL_STATS returns FALSE and error: "50. The network request is not supported." ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED". Although using only the query: OID_802_11_BSSID_LIST seems to work (list refreshes itself) but e.g. when I run Netstumbler (during work of my app) DeviceIoControl fails and getlasterror() shows error: "31 A device attached to the system is not functioning. ERROR_GEN_FAILURE ".
