    - Microsoft PostScript Driver Hi all, PostScript virtual printers use two different DLL, adobeps5.dll for version-2 and pscript5.dll for version-3. What does it mean!? Are thees DLL both supplied with Microsoft OS!? Maybe pscript5.dll with NT and pscript5.dll with 2000/XP !?? Other issue: I've to develop a postscrpt driver which create a ps file and exec custom function when job ends. The sample driver of DDk should fit my requirement, doesn't it!?     - K to U mode shared memory through sections Dear All, My driver is allocating a range of memory. This memory can be accessed in the driver from any context, user mode (ioctls) but also in dpcs (timer any...). At the stage of my developpment, I shared it with user mode by mapping it in each user space needed it (in an ioctl). It works very well. Since I know this is not recommended, I'm planning to migrate using sections now. I manged to create a named section in kernel mode and opening and mapping it in user user mode. This was ok. What I don't understand is what should I do to write some data through the section when in the context of a dpc for ex? I can't beleive I should map a view of the section using the NtCurrentProcess (or PsGetCurrentProcessId). And even if I should do this, should I ensure the user mode process has already read the shared memory before unmapping the view of the section and exiting the dpc....?     - monotholitc printer driver, Birghtness of bitmap Hello Ng, I'm working on a bitmap printer driver which generates a 1Bpp b/w bitmap. The surface is a GDI manged bitmap. The whole halftoning is done by GDI through punting back the DDI function calls. So far so good, now I'm facing the problem that I should offer the possiblity to change the brightness of the generated bitmap. I started with changing the COLORINFO structure of GDIINFO without success. The strange thing is that whenever DrvStrechBitBlt gets called it seems as it'd work, but the COLORINFO structure which is passed to the GDIINFO structure doesn't seem to change anything in the case of <DrvBitBlt>.     - Single Click Installation Hi, I have a drivers for 1394 based proprietory devices. The driver set consist of one class function driver (a new non standard class), and a lower filter driver for a standard class. Currently, I am installing it using two independednt inf files. I need a way to install these drivers using a single click method, which could be through a single inf file a batch file or a C program based executable. I have tried all the above approaches but nothing seem to work properly. Could anyone suggest a way for single click installation. I need to install it on Windows 98SE2, Me, 2000 & XPSP2.     - turn off hard disk ??? Dear all: My device is a PCI ATA/ATAPI card. In this case, I attach a hard disk on my card. Right click on desktop, select screen protection => power, select turn off hard disk after 3 minutes. If hard disk is on the south bridge, it will turn off.     - aVStream Driver - Filter Centric or Pin Centric? Hi, I am trying to stream video data across 2 PCs using a USB connection. On each side of the PC, I have a USB peripheral device to send and receive the data respectively. I hope to enumerate my USB peripheral device as a AVStream device and render the data using Directshow. May I know if the AVStream driver that I write should take the form of a filter-centric or pin-centric filter? Another problem that I have is the inability to make my device show up under the WDM STreaming capture devices in Graphedt. I understand that this problem might have been discussed before and the solution given suggested is often to check the guid in the inf file with the one given in the Filter Descriptor. I have checked and both values tally but still I am not able to enumerate my device successfully. May I know what if the successful enumeration of the device only depends on the inf file and file descriptors or are there other components involved?     - NDIS IM and NAT Hello, All! I am trying to develop a NAT server using my NDIS IM driver. Within ProtocolReceive() I change packets' IP address and port numbers, update checksums, and indicate it up. But seems like packets are not getting to destination. Could anybody tell me why this may happen? I do not change mac adresses - is that a problem? Or do I need to NdisSend packet instead of indicating it? Thanks.     - Installable Audio Driver (MMSYSTEM) and WHDR_BEGINLOOP - WHDR_ENDLOOP I'm writing an audio driver and trying to implement support for WHDR_BEGINLOOP and WHDR_ENDLOOP. Unfortunately, I cannot find very comprehensive documentation on these flags. So I have a few questions. 1. Are nested loops supposed to be supported? 2. If nested loops are supported, what is the behavior of BreakLoop when you are playing a nested loop? Does it break out of just the inside loop, or all loops currently playing? 3. If the WHDR_BEGINLOOP flag is set and WAVEHDR::dwLoops is 0, do you just ignore the entire loop without playing it all? (And I have tried these with other audio drivers, but looping seems to be badly supported by whatever I'm testing against. Either memory or IO locations are accessed in Win2K WDM driver Hi All, We written a WDM driver for 16 bit PCMCIA PC card in Win2k.We are able to read only either Memory or IO locations.We defined one IO resource,one INTR and Two Memory ( attribute and common) resources in INF file using LogConfigOverride section as shown below. PCCARD.NT.LogConfigOverride] LogConfig = Override0 [Override0] ConfigPriority = NORMAL IOConfig = 21@300-3FF%FDF ; IRQConfig = 3,4,5,7,9,10,11,12,15 ; IRQ MemConfig = 1000@0-FFFFFFFF%FFFFF000 ; Attribute Memory Descriptor MemConfig = 4000@0-FFFFFFFF%FFFFC000 ; Common Memory Descriptor PCCardConfig = 1:0:0(AC M XM0) ; ConfigIndex In device manager our device properties window If I use automatic settings, we are able to read/write Attribute and Common Memory. We are not able to access IO locations. And if I uncheck the "Use Automatic settings" , and select one of the IO resource from the "Settings base on" combo box which is not conflicted IO resource. In our case it ranges from 0x200 to 0x221. In CIS tuples I defined 0x200 as IO base and 0x21 as IO Range.If I set this only resource as current configuration. Then We are able to read/write IO locations. Since this manually selected Current configuration, there is no memory resource that's why memory is not accessible.     - UniDriver Printer Driver with Plugins, adding device(custom) fonts at run-time via OEMQueryFont UniDriver Printer Driver with Plugins, adding device(custom) fonts at run-time via OEMQueryFont Basically, I need to be able to add "device fonts" at run-time WITHOUT having to specify the fonts in the GPD file. I can install device fonts at run-time, but am limited by the "DeviceFont" entry in the GPD file which is fixed upon printer driver installation. More details follow: I need to be able to add "fonts" via OEMQueryFont(-) at run-time (via "Printer Properties"); the fonts are constructed at "run-time" by user input. I cannot (do not want to) list all possible variations of the fonts in the GPD file or likewise specify "font files" for all of these variations. (Please note that the "monolithic" version of the printer driver functioned correctly.) The test to see whether a "device font" is installed is to go to MS Word and see the device font entry in the "Font" drop-down list. As for adding device fonts, apparently, OEMQueryFont(-) is called ONLY when there is an entry in the GPD file for device fonts (i.e. " *DeviceFonts: LIST(1,2) "). Furthermore, the function is called once for each entry in the list (i.e. in this case, once for "1", then for "2"). If only 2 device fonts are "created" at run-time, then everything works OK. However, if more than 2 device fonts are "created" at run-time, then NO device fonts appear to be installed (i.e. not seen in MS Word "Font" drop-down list. Any ideas?     - More Printer driver debugging More confusion in debugging printer driver :( I am debugging the MSPLOT sample driver by placing OutputDebugString on the main exported functions to see which of these are being called, on adding the driver by the add printer wizard. Using WinDbg I am receving some output from DllMain and DrvQueryDriver but after that all output stop (not because these are the only functions called, it has to build the propertysheets so wheres the output from those functions), even if I output to a trace file. Whats strange is that I am recieving some error msgs from DrvDeviceCapabilities but without recieving the debug str that i wrote to inform me that it entered the function. I think it could be because 1. The driver fell to Kernel Mode at somepoint 2. The driver created some other process outside the spooler and all msgs are falling 3. The spooler process doesnÂ´t give me the rights to see the messages or doesnÂ´t allow the driver to send messages or write to files! What do you people think?     - Symantec Ghost 10.0 on XP SP2 w/WinDbg In the past I've used DriveImage and later Symantec Ghost to image disks on machines used for debugging particularly invasive, or particularly unstable driver projects. Setting up a new Dell PowerEdge 1800 dual Xeon box, I installed XP SP2 and connected it via a serial cable to another box running Windows Server 2003 (which I don't think is relevant but I've been wrong before). The basic setup worked as expected. However, attempting to use the latest Ghost 10.0 from Symantec was no picnic and I'm wondering if anyone here can explain the problems that I'm seeing. Install attempt #1: As a matter of course, I typically always boot the target box with all debugging options enabled in the boot.ini file and connect to it with WinDbg regardless of if I'm debugging a driver project or not. So I thought nothing of running the Ghost 10.0 installer on this setup. However, this generated first-chance exceptions that halted execution landing me at the WinDbg command prompt. Although somewhat atypical for production code, I thought nothing of it and figured that the exception would be handled. Possibly it was. But the Ghost installer reported "setup was interrupted - no files or settings have been modified". Well that's not true at all but it's off topic. Install attempt #2: Rebooted without the debugger, installed Ghost w/o obvious error and performed an initial backup of the test target's single SATA drive. Maybe this was just some installation problem? I tried rebooting back into the debugger with Ghost installed only to be hammered with exceptions in WinDbg. According to the Symantec support pages Symantec products aren't compatible with kernel-mode debuggers. The following two articles on the Symantec website provide an insufficient amount of detail to be of any use whatsoever. Kernel debuggers and debug output viewers are incompatible with Symantec programs http://tinyurl.com/ddoor Compatibility with kernel debugger programs http://tinyurl.com/dlyfj What's the conventional wisdom these days for imaging disks on hosts that (a) must be run routinely under WinDbg (b) are likely to suffer such abuse that they become unbootable and require restore from backup image in order to efficiently re-esablish the controls required for valid testing of kernel drivers? sysresccd.org sure looks nice but it doesn't seem to support SATA drives yet.     - usbvideo.sys verbose output? I'm having trouble getting any debug output from the usbvideo.sys driver. I have a Windows XP SP2 machine, with a partially checked build installed (usbvideo.sys and usbport.sys are checked builds). It is connected via firewire to another XP machine. WinDbg connects in kernel mode. I do not get much in the way of debug output. What's the next step to get verbose output? I'm developing a USB Video Class compliant device. Thanks!     - Autoplay Radio device? I am trying to build an USB FM receiver. The USB device have a preset frequency programmed into the microcontroller. My ultimate goal is to have the device plug in and start playing the radio station PC with no drivers or software installation. I am stumped on the best way. I have considered a mass storage device with player software in the flash memory. Is there a better way? I would think Audio Class would be good.     - Problem on 64 bit processor I have ndis IM driver - tested on w2k+sp4,w2k3+sp1,wxp+sp2 on 32 processors. All is ok. When I install this driver on w2k+sp4 on 64 bit processor (Intel EM64T) driver crashes, no blue screen appears and system restarts without blue screen. Question: When I want to use ndis IM driver on 32 windows systems installed on 64 bit processors - do I need to add some defines, or does need my driver code some adjustments for running on 64 bit processor ?     - Loading a driver from a mapped drive fails The call StartService() fails when the driver is located in a shared network drive or have a network drive mapped to a drive letter. As an example, the DDK's sample exe for CANCEL and EVENT have this issue. I can run them OK within my local drive, but when I place them in a network shared drive (mapped to Z: drive), the call to StartService() returns ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND. I called QueryServiceStatusEx() and ControlService() with SERVICE_CONTROL_INTERROGATE, and dwCurrentState always shows ADS_SERVICE_STOPPED and not ADS_SERVICE_START_PENDING. Can anyone help?     - Debugging IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Hello, I have a driver than runs on ksproxy for my hardware device. The driver works but I have intermittent issues on enable/disable of the driver which will generate the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL exception and kill the machine. The driver was made with DriverStudio's tool derived from their KsDevice. I'm trying to track down whether it's something I've done (with bad use of spin locks perhaps) or if it's something in the DriverStudio framework. Has anyone had similar issues or have some suggestions for tools/techniques to nail down the issue. I'm using SoftIce as my debugger right now but the error doesn't happen in my functions, that I've been able to trap.     - DDK EULA / using sample source in commercial projects Hi-- My employer has a DDK license. I'm not sure of the exact licensing details (e.g. which flavor if there are indeed flavors). We would like to include some code from the DDK in a utility we are developing. The project in the DDK is called DevCon. So: We'd like to include/use some source from DevCon for an installer we are writing. We don't want to actually use the DevCon utility executable. We just want to use some of the source code from the utility which will be compiled into a new utility that does other things beyond what DevCon does at the moment. But it is a commercial project and could be going on potentially tens of thousands of CDs. Can someone categorically say 'Yes, you can use code from the DevCon project for your own utility. Don't be stupid, that's what its there for.' Or can someone say 'No, you can't use code from DevCon in your own project because its not redistributable, can't you read?.' Or can someone point me in the direction of a more developer-friendly FAQ or some other resource that won't require a lawyer to understand (the EULA below is just plain confusing)? Or, if its a gray area, can someone tell me which department at Microsoft to contact? In the EULA it says: "You may also reproduce and distribute the Sample Code in object code form along with any modifications you make to the Sample Code, provided you comply with the Distribution Requirements described below." There is no section in the EULA titled 'Distribution Requirements', but there is a section called 'Redistribution Requirements'. In the redistribution requirements it says (amongst other things not applicable to a utility): "Contact Microsoft for the applicable royalties due and other licensing terms for all other uses and/or distribution of the Sample Code." Further, there is text on the page describing DevCon (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q311272) which says: "DevCon is not redistributable. It is provided for use as a debugging and development tool. You can freely modify DevCon for *private* (my emphasis) use. The sample demonstrates how to use the SetupAPI and CfgMgr32 functions together effectively to enumerate devices and perform device operations." I'm not a a lawyer. And the EULA that comes with the DDK seems to be confusing if not inconsistent when viewed in light of other text that governs individual utilities included on the DDK. The EULA is below.     - USB selective suspend freeze Hello I'm writing usb function drivers. The usb device is a composite device with 4 interfaces. The device supports remote wake-up. 1 driver services 1 interface, another the 3 other interfaces. I'm running on WinXP SP 2. When the device is idle for 3 seconds, the drivers send down a idle request on each interface. After that, the callback routine of the idle request is called for each device. Each device sends down a wait wake irp and transitions to device power state D2. At this point, I can surprise-remove the device, I can disable the composite driver (to imitate safe removal), I can go to standby, I can hibernate, but I can't shut the system down. When the system goes to S5, something hangs in the USBD. I've tried to cancel the idle request in the power dispatch routine for "Set S5", but the IoCancelIrp() never returns. I've tried not to cancel, but then the usbd gets stuck when I abort a bulk out pipe. When I shut down without the device in selective suspend mode, everything is okay. What am I doing wrong ?     - Printer driver install Hi there, I have build a small monolithic printer driver prototype for win2003 x86 and I am trying to install the driver via the add printer wizard but it is not installing and I am recieving a "Printer driver was not installed. Operation could not be completed" (not much info :(). Now I am trying to attach windbg to the spool process to see what is happening but windbg is not loading the symbol files and not recieving any of my debugging messages from the driver. I think that the driver is not being started at all, but then what could be causing error? I encounter a problem on 2-processors machine (windows 2003 sp 1) with 2 NICs teamed together with compaq teaming driver (cpqteam.sys). The problem is that when issuing "ipconfig /all", the IP configuration is empty. During debugging the OS startup, I noticed that my driver is waiting for the cpqteam to finish it's binding to specified NIC (inside NdisIMInitializeDeviceInstance=ADEx function), and that cpqteam driver is waiting to my driver to finish it's binding to the same NIC (again, inside NdisIMInitializeDeviceInstance=ADEx ). That is a dead lock. After waiting for a while, the 2 threads are killed and the binding process is failed. More info: In my driver, the MiniportInitalize function is called returns successfully. I have to do the same - an USB client driver on top of Usbhub.sys. The only purpose of this driver is to implement vendor-specific request IOCTRL_ and talk to the Enpoint 0 of an USB device. The problem here is that in our system there are some other USB Client drivers like usbser.sys, blan.sys, some composite client drivers, etc. The driver I am to write should expose an additional interface in the Device Manager and co-exist with these client drivers. In my opinion I should place my 'vendor-specific' driver on top of Usbhub.sys and below another USB client drivers that we have. Please correct me if I am wrong. It seams that the problem here is how to place this driver properly in the driver stack...     - A question about gdi functions for a print processor. Hi I'm working on a printer driver. ours is Unidriver-based driver. I'm programming with the sample sources of a print processor that are in the Windows DDK. (\WINDDK\3790\src\print\genprint) The sample sources already implemented a few printing features such as n-up, reverse printing, etc... i want to make a feature of manual duplex with the sample sources, but i got a problem. As you know, the manual duplex feature is that the front data of pages for duplex is printed at first, and then the driver show a message box that inform of the user to put the printed matters on the multi-purpose tray. Finally, the back data of pages for duplex is printed. So, i refered to the sample code amd made a linked list that store a page information. i used Gdi functions for a print processor such as GdiStartDocEMF() and GdiEndDocEMF().... but.. I got a problem.. the problme is that after the front data of pages for duplex is sent to spooler, i called GdiEndDocEMF() function to eject all the front data of page from printer. At that time, unforunately.. the emf data is deleted from spooler. T_T although i called GdiStartDocEMF() to tranlate the back data of pages, the return of the function is failed,(the GetLastErr() is 62).. what function do the GdiEndDocEMF() replace to eject all data from printer? how can i implement the maunal duplex feature in a print processor?? if you know, plz... let me know how to do or what to do.... thanks. wany.
