 - Createfile failed(access denied) when logged on as limited user I have written a NDIS IM device driver and I used IOCTRL to communicate between my user mode app and the device driver. It works fine when logged on as Administrator but createfile fails (access denied) when logged on as limited user. Anyone know how to get around this? I called create file with the following attributes. CreateFile (TEXT"\\\\.\\MyDriver"), GENERIC_WRITE | GENERIC_READ, 0, 0, OPEN_EXISTING, FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL |FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED, 0); Is this to do with how I installed the driver or the way I called createfile?  - 802.1x - Setting the Dynamic WEP Keys Hi, I am writing an application that allows a user to connect to 802.1x access points. I connect to the access point, and use EAPOL to get both the broadcast and unicast keys. I try setting the keys using OID_802_11_ADD_WEP, but I don't get a valid connection (i.e a valid DHCP connection). I found some Microsoft documentation, that basically said that unicast keys are not supported yet. Is this true? It also set that only one key can be set. The last key set is the active one. So I have tried only setting one of the keys, and it still does not work. Also below is a sample of how I set the WEP key.  - Sending a WM_ message from WDM to app Hi all! How can I send a windows message to an application from a WDM driver? Several years ago I wrote a VxD driver for an ISA device used in our equipment. Through an IOCTL message, our application would pass its handle and the VxD would store it. When the VxD had something ready for us it would use the handle to send the app a windows message at which time we might have to do some sort of IOCTL to the driver or more commonly read a message in dualported memory. Good or bad programming practice it worked quite well. We are migrating to XPe and I'm trying to translate this possibly dubious practice from VxD to WDM. I have all the tools.  - how to deal with packet in calling NdisMIndicateReceivePacket I am trying to write a virtual network drive which the incoming traffic is from DeviceIoControl routines instead of a "real" NIC. Whenever the driver get any incoming traffic, it should call NdisMIndicateReceivePacket() to notify the protocol driver that a packet is ready. However, one of the input is (PPNDIS_PACKET) ReceivePackets. It turns out that there should be an array of packets.  - Virtual Printer Driver Hi, I have to develop a virtual printer driver which can do the following stuff: - generating a bitmap( color/monochrome) - generation a textfile, in which all DrvTextOut string are stored - the complete strings should be parsed and replaced, if needed( special sequences ) - the replaced string should be updated in the bitmap I have tested both the msplotter sample in which I can easily acess the text in DrvTextOut and the oemdll sample in with which I can generate a bitmap. But the parsing and manipulation of matched string in the bitmap makes me headaches. Can a unidriver plugin do all the things? Any hints, tips are welcome. I'm interested in getting the resources used by drivers. I realize that Device Manager reports these resources and so they are available. I tried using IoGetDeviceProperty, but blue screens with PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR 0x02 got in my way, thus I'm looking at SetupDiGetDeviceRegistryProperty(). However, the DevicePropertyBootConfigurationTranslated is not apparently available from SetupDiGetDeviceRegistryProperty (). The SPDRP_DEVICE_POWER_DATA doesn't provide the resources, and I'm looking at SPDRP_DRIVER which provides the Driver Key in the registry (Software Key). It also refers back to "Driver Information in the Registry." Can I get the resources for drivers without looking in the registry? Do I have to read the ...\Control\AllocConfig which is a REG_RESOURCE_LIST? And if so, what is the format of that binary data, a CM_RESOURCE_LIST type of thing?  - Audio Midi Driver Hello, This is an audio/midi driver related problem. I hope somebody can help. I try to write a simple midi-in driver where data is transfered from a device to some midi software application. Therefore i took the DDK dmusUART sample as a basis and modified it to my needs. Now the driver is just for input. By orienting at the sample and the DDK documentation all pin declarations and property request handlers should be correct. The device shows up correctly in the audio device listings and can be selected as input. But when i try to connect the IMXF is created, initialized and the output connects and immediately disconnects. After that the IMFX is destroyed. This happens about 28 times and no data is transfered. After that the application beliefs it ist connected but the driver shows no singns of life anymore and does not react on any further connection attempts. Can anyone help? Thanks. I therefore create a "synchronization" type timer and using KeSetTimerEx () i schedule the timer. But it looks like the timer is not called at the time interval i need it to invoke the timer callback routine. I check this using KeQuerySystemTime (). Following are the steps: 1) KeInitializeTimerEx (&(pDevExt->myTimer), SynchronizationTimer); KeInitializeDpc (&(pDevExt->myTimerDpc), myTimerRoutine, pKsDev); 2) timerDelay.QuadPart = -180000; // 18 ms KeSetTimerEx (&(pDevExt->myTimer), timerDelay, 18, &(pDevExt->myTimerDpc)); But what i observed to my dismay is that my myTimerRoutine () was called at approximate intervals like: 15.625 ms 15.625 ms 15.625 ms 15.625 ms 31.250 ms and so on as the pattern keeps repeating.... But, I was under the understanding that if the SURPRISE_REMOVAL_OK bit is set, even the "tray icon" does not appear. Please help me in making sure that my understanding is right. Hi, The majority of printer drivers under Windows support only 8-bit B/W printers or 8-bit per channel color printers. Has anybody every tried to write a printer driver to support 10-bit (or higher) gray level printers under MS Windows environments? Specifically, if I have a 10-bit gray level image and a printer that does support 10-bit printing, I would like the full 10 bits of every pixel go un-truncated all the way from the application to the printing engine. The proposed solution is to fix the path entry for %SystemRoot%\System32 \Wbem or copy framedyn.dll to the System32 directory. We are trying to decide on the best course of action to prevent users from receiving this error. However, we have been unable to reproduce the problem ourselves. We have tried corrupting the path entry for % SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem and even deleting framedyn.dll altogether. Neither action affects AddPrinterDriver in any way, and our printer installation proceeds as normal. Can somebody at Microsoft explain how AddPrinterDriver becomes dependent on framedyn.dll?  - USB newbie: Sending a vendor-specific request to a USB device Hello, I don't have much experience with Windows platform development, so I hope someone can point me in the right direction. I need to send a vendor-specific request to a USB device. I know the bmRequestType, bRequest, wValue, wIndex, etc, that I need to send. I just can't piece together how to do it on Windows. I've figured out how to enumerate USB devices, and can find the device, and open a handle to it with CreateFile(), but I'm stumped as to what I need to pass to DeviceIoControl(). Or even if DeviceIoControl() is the right avenue for this. Spent most of yesterday searching the net for information on this and was surprised at how little I could find. If then, my Miniport's queue length will be longer and longer as time goes on. In that case, is it guarantee the protocol driver's issueing "CancelPacket"? Or, should my miniport returns status with NDIS_STAUS_RESOURCES as a parameter of NdisMSendComplete to resolve the situation of congestion? Thank you.  - IoCallDriver doc is wrong and function returns undocumented status According to the documentation for the IoCallDriver function, it is supposed to return either the NTSTATUS value the lower driver set in the I/O Status Block or STATUS_PENDING. However, I have a case where the lower driver is clearly setting the NTSTATUS in the I/O Status Block to STATUS_SUCCESS, yet the IoCallDriver function is returning a STATUS_WAIT_2 !!!!!!!!! Better yet, there is absolutely NO documentation on what the heck a STATUS_WAIT_2 even means!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone out there know what a STATUS_WAIT_0, STATUS_WAIT_1, STATUS_WAIT_2, or STATUS_WAIT_3 means? Anyone have any idea why the IoCallDriver function decides it knows better than the underlying driver and changes the return status from what the driver attempted to return?  - IRP FilterResourceReq. and mf.sys not working The problem I am seeing is that my driver successfully requests new PCI memory in the Filter Resource IRP when installed directly but fails when installed through MIcorsofts multifunction mf.sys. I need to allocate an additional PCI Memory Region for a driver to fix a HW config problem. Support Win2000 and later, testing on Win XP. In the IRP_MN_FILTER_RESOURCE_REQUIREMENTS, I allocate memory for a new IO_RESOURCE_REQUIREMENTS_LIST, copy the existing list to the new one, append the new memory region to the end, update count and size, clear and free existing list, link the new one into the IRP, and pass the IRP down. When I install this driver directly for the PCI Vendor/Device ID it works. In the Start Device IRP I see the original resources plus the new resource that I have allocated. After installing, in the Driver Properties Resource Tab, I see the original resources plus the new resource. Driver works fine. The problem comes when I use multifunction mf.sys to enumerate the functions and install the exact same driver in the enumerated function. My .inf installs mf.sys for the PCI Device and Vendor ID and currently enumerates one function. When the driver is installed for that function, I see the Filter Resource IRP but never receive the Start Device IRP. The driver fails to start and indicates it can not find enough free resources and to restart. Restarting does not help still gives same error. Any thoughts or ideas on what could be going wrong? Why does mf.sys effect allocating new resources? I did notice that the resource list is not the same between the two cases. The actual memory and IRQ regions are identical but the standalone driver has some Private Data (Type 0x81) entries as well.  - Can NDIS5 drivers be "chained" in Windows XP? Several years ago we developed an NDIS2 driver in OS/2. When our code is notified a frame is available (typically via ReceiveLookahead indication), it returns SUCCESS to indicate it will accept and copy the frame. If there is more than one driver in the chain, the next driver does NOT get the indication. Our code also returns FORWARD_FRAME when it wishes to pass along a frame to the next driver instance in its chain without accepting it and it returns FRAME_REJECTED when it does not want to accept the frame but also does not want to pass it to the next driver in the chain. The ability to chain together drivers and have those toward the rear of the chain NOT see frames consumed by those toward the front can be an important performance boost in some situations for us. We've recently had an outside company rewrite our driver for NDIS in Windows XP. This driver does not support the idea of a chain of instances where an instance that receives a frame can choose to accept or reject the frame such that any other instances of the driver do not receive the frame at all. The outside vendor cannot determine if/how this can be done in Windows. Is there a way to achieve this behavior in Windows XP? We would like to be able to get a status from the printer every 5 minutes, the printer is bi-di but does not send it's status, except when asked.  - [HELP] Virtual Disk Driver - Create symbolic link. Hi there, I wrote a virtual disk driver (use a file to simulate a disk), it works fine. Then I wrote a application runs in RING-3, which can send a customer IOCTL code to the driver, I want the driver create a symbolic link to a driver-letter such as "Z:" when the customer IOCTL code arrival. I did so, modified my source code. When the driver got the IOCTL code, I create a symbolic link between the FDO and \DosDevices\Z:, and the IoCreateSymbolicLink() call return success. But in fact, when I open my explorer, there are no "Z:" driver letter usable. Could you please tell me why? And could you please tell me how to resolve this issue?? Thanks. Detail: The process services.exe uses 100% CPU time during initialisation. The Midi Pin works well with other applications and it works also with Cubase.
