I was under the impression that the DDK could be downloaded somewhere?
Am I right? Can I write a driver just for the fun of it?

If you have an MSDN subscription you can download the DDK, otherwise you
have to pay shipping. This has been discussed many times on this forum,
seach Google for previous discussions.

No, there is no book, go to http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/ddk/winddk.mspx
and order the Windows Server 2003 DDK.
