    - Creating a Serial to USB Driver Hi, I am a totally newbie in windows driver development. I currently required to develop a serial to USB driver for a USB device such that the driver will appear to be a normal COM port under Windows but underneath data are transfered to the USB port.     - Copying DevMode structure I am in a situation where I need to have a user use a print dialog, save the DevMode information from the dialog, then sometime later reload it and use it. For this, I save all the members of the structure, then copy the binary data at the end ("Driver Extra") by copying the bytes from the end of the structure for the length DevMode.dmDriverExtra. This works almost all of the time. However, I have run across a couple of print drivers (Xerox drivers) where this does not work. It seems that perhaps the problematic drivers have driver extra data with pointers to structures that later, on reload, don't exist. If this is the case, then I suppose I'm hosed.     - How to access parallel port from user mode program on Win2K/XP? I would write an utility to access the parallel port. Do I need to write a kernel driver to reserve the parallel port? or the system supplied parallel port driver proivdes the way for the user mode program to access the parallel port?     - Control of default RS-232 pin levels? I am controlling an external device (amateur radio) from the RS-232 port, using a specific software. I am using the DTR line for this, but my problem is that this pin goes high by default when I exit this software and return back to Windows XP, which is not what is desirable for the external device. Is there any way I can set the default RS-232 pin levels/states, when the port is not in use by my device control application?     - Compile Errors when using usbioctl.h I am trying to compile a file that uses one of the pre-defined IOCTL codes in usbioctl.h. I am getting build errors (C2220 and C4200) because this file has some data type definitions with zero-length arrays. Hi folks, Just a quick check to see whether anyone else has found this, and agrees that it's just a typo: I've been developing a multifunction driver in accordance with the principles laid out in Walter's book, which I am finding to be a very clear and useful volume. However, there does appear to be a small error in it.... In Chapter 11, where it discusses handling of PnP requests dependent on whether the IRP concerns the FDO or PDO, Table 11-1 indicates that the "succeed" action should be taken for IRP_MN_QUERY_DEVICE_TEXT when handled for a PDO. When I tried this with the verifier running, a bugcheck ensued: WDM DRIVER ERROR: [xxxxxx.sys @ 0xF052BF70] Caller has changed the status field of an IRP it does not understand (Irp = 820EAF48 ). IRP_MJ_PNP.IRP_MN_QUERY_DEVICE_TEXT(Bogus) I then took the time to install the examples that come with the book, and noticed that the MULFUNC example actually performs the "ignore" action, so I'm assuming that this is just a typo in the book?     - Closing the handle A few weeks ago I brought up my IFD handler with the then version of firmware we had produced and noted that the driver's Create/Close/and cleanup functions would all be called during system boot, and before any Smart card app could be called. No surprises, but I did at one point suspect that the asynchronous nature of Open/Close was causing a serialization blue screen. That proved to be something else, but I well remember the fact that Creat, Close, and Cleanup were all invoked by Windows Smartcard services during thast early testing. Now, several weeks and many fixes later, I note that Create only is now called. Close and Cleanup never get invoked until I shutdown the system. However, this affects Standby/Hibernate since the IFD handler fails the Standby/Hibernate POWER IRP because it has an open handle. One of the firmware fixes involved correcting the ATR. Does the ATR have ANYTHING to do with setting a state that Windows Smartcard services will not close it's handle to the reader, as evidenced in earlier testing? Gary G.     - filter driver ? Hello guys, My name is Lior. I need your help with a project I am currently working on. I need to catch sound traveling from the modems speaker phone to the sound board (SB). the sound is not traveling with wave-in/out commands but in a certain driver level, cause all of the sound when a conversation is started, is directed to the SB automatically (even when I track the number of current active streams, with my SB monitor program, I don't see any change in the number of streams when the call is beginning, meaning it is all done in a lower level, so I think). As I said, I need to capture that sound so I can decide what to do with it - transfer it somewhere else or let it pass me to the SB. I understand that I need to develop a filter driver, after reading much on KS I still don't know which layer a filter driver I need. Is it a lower level filter driver (below the functional driver) ? or an upper filter driver (above the functional driver) ? Please help. p.s I also need to simulate a mic connected to the SB. Meaning fooling the SB that he gets sound from the mic-in jack when actually I am transmitting to him sound from a socket. Can that be done in the same filter driver ?? Then all goes well (I receive Interrupt IN and/or Bulk IN data). It also seems that the USB Bus driver does not forward (or detect) USB data after selecting a new interface/alternateSetting couple. Note 1 : My driver pools IN pipes (except Bulk IN) using IRP reuse Note 2 : For the First SelectConfiguration/interface, the problem does not occur ! Does seomeone encountered this kind of problem ? Only this call uses win32k.lib, this finally gets linked with WIN32K.sys, which is kernel mode GDI component. Even GDI32.DLL supports lot of ENG functions, why this is moved to WIN32K.sys? for me any 2k driver built with this call causes not load the UI. Also fails to print from the winword. A user can connect or disconnect one or more of these devices at any time. I provide a dll to interface between a Windows application and my kernel-mode driver (under construction). Either I or my customer customer will create his/her own Windows app, in their favorite programming environment. The Problem: I'd like to provide callback functions in my dll that will execute whenever a device is connected or disconnected. I can see that there is an SDK Platform function RegisterDeviceNotification that allows user code to register for a callback to a window or service. But I don't have either in my dll. This does not therefore seem to meet my needs. I also see that the IO Manager exports the IoRegisterPlugPlayNotification for drivers. It accepts a callback function argument. The Questions: Can I use the IoRegisterPlugPlayNotification function and locate the callback function be in my (user mode) dll?     - Problem Modifing the NDIS packet Hi All, I am trying to modify the NDIS packet. I want to redirect the packet from destined for 172.10.10.10 to 172.10.10.10. steps taken to modify the packets. 1. Modify the Destination IP address. 2. Calculate the Checksum. 3. Modify the Destination MAC address. 4. Send the packet. I have used both Network stacking and own NDIS packets. When i tested my code, it worked on One Ethernet Adapter and it did not work on another adapters. I do not know why. When i captured the packet with Etherreal, it shows that the Checksum is 0 at the destination. Everything else is fine. I checked the IP address, MAC address, then are updated. I am calculating the right checksum and i made sure i am updating the checksum after i modified the packet. I am not sure, when Checksum became 0. I do not know, if Miniport driver made it 0. I tried to send a SCSI command, Request Sense, to a SCSI disk logic unit, but there are two buffers, one is the data buffer and the other is the sense data buffer.     - Malformed TCP packets I have an application that uses overlapped sockets. I run two instances of the application on different PCs; one instance connects to another, then both instances exchange some data. I am having troubles with certain PCs, which send out malformed TCP packets with wrong TCP checksums or IP headers partially overwritten by user data. The problem happens with Win2k SP3 machines, and SP4 seems to help. Now I have an XP SP1 machine (A) and XP SP2 machine (B). When A connects to B, all works fine. When B connects to A (i.e. A is listening), then some TCP packets coming out of A are malformed. When two instances of the appliction are running on A, all is fine. Other XP SP1 and 2003 machines work fine. So it must be something wrong with the machine A. Even if I did something wrong in my user-mode program, this woudn't affect the packet headers, would it? Is it possible to get the list of all the drivers in the TCP stack? I would then compare the stacks on A and B to see if there's any difference. Any other suggestions? Thanks.     - NdisMQueryAdapterResources() : resource allocation problem at WinMe Hi, I am stuck with a similar problem (as mentioned below in one of the older postings). Driver works with XP and 2K. Infact it works with WinME installed on PC where I use PCI-Cardbus(Ricoh) controller to insert my cardbus wireless lan controller. It doesn't work with WinME (on IBM Thinkpad A21m laptop). My NdisMQueryAdapterResources() returns only one resource i.e. interrupt. Using debugger command 'pci' I see that BAR seems to be mapped. No difference when I use NdisMPciAssignResources() wrt number of resources but here I get IO enabled in addition to BusMaster and Memory (i.e. control word 0x7 in NdisMPCIAssignResources() against 0x6 in NdisMQueryAdapterResources() . There is one imp print in the debugger in the reboot that follows crash because of pci-bar not getting mapped. It says"VPICD Severe Perf Warning: interrupt #9 is supriousing. Get the owners of the devices on that interrupt to look at their code." This problem exists till I don't shutdown the m/c and start. Device manager shows that 'SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus' is the interrupt that prompts that warning. My device is on interrupt 0xB. To remove the associated registry keys, I think you
should use setupdixxxx functions to remove the device
node.
