    - help debugging KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Hi I hooked CreateFile (i know hooking is bad..) and for some reason, the following line causes a BSOD with BUGCHECK: 1e KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED wcslen(ObjectAttributes->ObjectName->Buffer) > 7 I also checked that ObjectName and ObjectName->Buffer are'nt NULL.     - NDIS passthru: signal event We are programming in a driver (NDIS passthru) environment and would like to know if there is an efficient way to signal the "outer world" about an event that happened in the driver. We know that we could use DeviceIoControl, which is good to supply data from "outside" to the driver and this routine also works in the opposite direction. However, you would have to "poll" the driver every now and then which is not really a nice way of obtaining data from a driver, is it? There must be a better, direct way of signaling the normal environment in a driver, but so far we havn't found anything. Any suggestions (, if possible with sample code)?     - USB Communication I need to be able to talk to a device that is sending USB data. I also need to listen. What is the preferred method of doing so? Do I need to create a device driver or should I just use something that MS already has built in? We can assume that the OS is XP Pro. I am very familiar with writing C++ code but haven't needed to use C, and certainly have never needed to build a device driver, which seems awfully complicated as I read many of these posts regarding USB.     - Missing VSS SDK files + GatherWriterMetadata problem The BETest example from the 7.1 VSS SDK requires some files that appear to be missing from the SDK, e.g. vs_assert.cpp, vs_assert.hxx, vs_trace.cpp, vs_trace.hxx, vs_hash.hxx, vs_hash.cpp and others. Also the include path in the "sources" file is incorrect and refers to a non-existent library: tracing.lib. Where can I find the missing files? I managed to compile the example without these files since they were either renamed version of files found in one of the example projects or slightly modified version of sample code available elsewhere on the web. However when I run the example on Windows XP I get the following error: Error in c:\winddk\3790.1830\src\vsssdk71\testapps\betest\main.cpp(2382): - Call pvbc->GatherWriterMetadata(&pAsync) not succeeded. Error code = 0x80042301. Error description = VSS_E_BAD_STATE This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. Can you tell me why GatherWriterMetadata might be failing? - the sample code seems to do everything right by the API docs. All OK except for: Error installing cab: SDKINCS3 Error installing cab: SDKINCS2 Error installing cab: SDKINCS1 Now I don't even qualified as a newbie yet. So treat me gently please. Can anyone tell me what the problem is; should I worry about the errors; have I got the correct version of DDK for creating a intermediate device driver to run on XP and Win2K?     - Print bitmaps from MSPaint Hi I am developing a virtual printer driver starting from the MSPLOT DDK sample. The driver uses a device managed surface and there are implemented DrvCopyBits, DrvBitBlt and also other painting hooks. When printing from MSPaint, DrvCopyBits is called, but the problem is that I receive very large bitmaps, even if the bitmap opened in MSPaint is small. For instance, in MSPaint I have a bitmap filled with one color and only one line drawn with another color. I would expect to receive in DrvCopyBits a source surface with a 4bpp bitmap, but I receive a 24bpp bitmap. You can see in this bitmap many other colors, like a translation between the two colors used in the MSPaint bitmap. Why is this happening? Here are some settings made in driver: - the dither format in the DEVINFO is set for BMF_24BPP, and the DrvDitherColor is not implemented. - the default pallete is created with EngCreatePalette(PAL_BGR, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0) - the halftone in the GDIINFO is set to HT_FORMAT_24BPP Are there any other settings that could generate this behavior?     - How can I use Tdi in windows 98 scsi port driver ? I'm writing a scai port (*.mpd) driver for windows 98, It using tdi to connect the remote server with the tcp connection. they can transmit data to another, but after transmit some MB of data ,the computer with this driver hangs,or blue for bugchecks(report exception 10E ndis error ).     - ACPI.sys gets into endless loop reading temperature to appologize right away; i've started to write drivers w/ RT11, VMS etc, but then I got too old to do this stuff; now I find myself back in Win XP w/out clue... I found out: sytem proc [4] handle 64h jumps into acpi.sys+10b10h when my CPU P4 2.4 Ghz Northwood gets around 75C. Unfortunately it starts to consume continuously 50% of CPU power (Hyperthread active) and it does not go to sleep even if the temp. goes down. Amazingly, when I start e.g. Sandra or any other program which reads board and CPU temp, the system proc. goes back to eventually running 1-2% every now and then as before. I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE SYSTEM IDLE PROC. Award Bios 6 PG, EPOX Mob 4PDA2+, Win XP SR2 P4 2.4 Ghz Hyperth.active I assume there is an event telling that the CPU gets hot; ACPI gets involved and ACPI can than either not read the correct value from the BIOS or cannot find any release criteria to understand that the temp event has gone away. Could somebody illuminate my ignorance: which event triggers the system proc [4] handle 64h to run can somebody provide the sources of acpi.sys latest build where can I find documentation, how acpi gets motherboard values for temperature; I found a lot about power management, but not about temp. sorry to bother hk.     - Watermark in Postscript Driver Hi! I want to put watermark feature in Postcript driver using plug-ins. What I have done is writing the watermark text on Printer DC at Document event end page. This way it draws text but only problem is text is over the page and the data on page is hidden under watermark. Where as I want it to be meged with data on page so that both are visible.Basicaly Transparent text. I believe some ROP code may solve the problem but in case of PS no ROP code seems to work. The another way of writing watermark is the way given in DDK example using PDL but in that case how do I send font info when the selected font for watermark text is not device font. As a first step, I'd like to build a print driver that prints to an image file (e.g. png or tiff). What resources would help me at least get this far?. Any sample source code for something similar? Book recommendations? Websites? <aside> PDFCreator claims to have a printer driver that prints to a PDF.     - Overwriting Graphics-Output Hi guys! Could you please help me to overwrite parts of every frame thats been drawn to the screen in W2k / XP. Dont has to care about GDI / DX / OpenGL. Just some way thats able to finally draw to the entire screen after a frame has been finsihed. Whats the best solution to do so please?     - Does BDA DVB-T minidriver have better performance than non-BDA one? Hi all, I've done some research about the BDA architecture. My purpose is to develope a DVB-T BDA driver. As I known, Microsoft constructs BDA architecture to optimize the performance. But I wonder if it could optimize the DVB-T performance based on the following reasons, 1. The transform filter is a user mode Mpeg2 decoder, so it can't reduce the system job to copy data from kernal mode to user mode. 2. It seems to be no BDA Mpeg2 decoder, so it can't do the way as BDA transform flter does. Is my understanding correct? Could anyone give me some explaination if any wrong in my above mention?     - Acquiring a mutex in DPC Hy All, In DDK doc, I can read that KeWaitForSingleObject can be called at DISPATCH_LEVEL if timeout is set to 0. The fact is I use this to wait for and acquire a mutex inside DPCs (either comming from a timer or an interruption from hardware). But I can also read in KeReleaseMutex that a mutex should ALWAYS be released by the thread holding it. My questions are: - Can I acquire the mutex in a DPC called by an interuption and then release it when the DPC is called by a later interruption? - Can I acquire the mutex in a DPC called by an interuption and then release it in ANOTHER DPC called by a timer In other means, from the mutex holding / releasing point of view, are the DPC calls considered to be done by the same "system" "thread".     - NdisWriteEventLogEntry and Strings I am trying to use NdisWriteEventLogEntry to write to event log from my protocol driver. I have created message file and linked with my driver. Messages appear correctly in Event Viewer until I try to use insertable strings.     - Silent installation doesn't occur Hi We have a problem installing drivers silently for Windows XP SP2. We are using Device Driver Framework (difx) for Wise Package Studio and our drivers gets registered correctly on the computer but when pluggin in the device in the usb port the hardware detection wizrd pops up asking if we want to connect to the internet (Windows update) to find a new driver...when selecting no and next it is possible to just autoinstall the driver (eg. Windows knows where to find the inf and sys file for this driver!) but we don't avoid the wizrd!!! My question is: How do I avoid this??? MS own version is that is has to do with the 3rd party supplier not writing the driver properly - I don't care i need to install the driver sp that the found new hardware wizard NEVER pops up when the user adds the device to ANY usb port...     - lifetime of device instance handles I have a quesiton about device instance handles, used by CM* functions like CM_Get_Child and by certain DiSetup* functions. Another example of "device instance handle" I am talking about: DevInst member of SP_DEVINFO_DATA. So, now the quesiton: are there any rules regarding the "lifetime" of device instance handles, associated with particular devices? For example, if device instance handle was associated with particular USB device A and that device A was unplugged, but the new device B was plugged instead, is it possible that the same device handle will be reused by the system for device B ? I'm now about to understand why some applications aren't working. The CMD.EXE copy command for example. I can drag'n'drop a file from the network drive to the desktop. But I can't use the copy command. It just returned "0 file(s) copied". When I use IrpTracker all requests succeed. Where is the difference between explorer and the copy command while copying files?     - AVStream 64-bit USB device driver Hi all, I'm porting a 32-bit AVStream device driver to the 64-bit system. In 32-bit system, the driver works fine. But when ported to the 64-bit, the driver failed to send the IRP down to the USB host. The return error code is 0xC0000B00 (USBD_STATUS_ISOCH_REQUEST_FAILED). And when I checked the return status for each packet, the code is 0xC0000A00 (USBD_STATUS_BAD_START_FRAME), which indicates that the start frame number is out of range. And when I check the start frame number and the frame number in that particular moment, the difference between the two are within the 1024 range. May I know what could be the cause of the problem? At that time I was working under DOS, the port had been programmed directly, so there was no need in such complications as EPP mode negotiation. Now I want to migrate my device to Windows.     - Printer driver document events Hi I am developing a virtual printer driver starting from the MSPLOT DDK sample. What I need to do is: - when the printing starts, show a dialog box so the user can choose a file name - render the print job to the selected file - when the print job is finished, open the generated file and show the result to the user I show the first dialog box in the DrvDocumentEvent, STARTDOCPOST event, and I pass the file name to the renderer dll in the JOB_INFO_2 structure. That works fine, I can read the job information in the renderer dll and generate the printing file. The problem is that when the job is finished, how can I open the generated file from the context of the user that started the print job? The logic option would be DrvDocumentEvent, ENDDOC or ENDDOCPOST events, but these events don't come at all (the spool is enabled). And even if they would come, they do not have a parameter for the job id, so I cannot retrieve the file name. Where should I implement this tasks on the end print job?     - Possible Bug In Networking Statistics: Nonunicasts Sent should be Nonunicasts Received ?! Hi, In task manager in the networking tab I enabled the following columns: Nonunicasts Sent, Nonunicasts Received, Nonunicasts Sent per Interval, Nonunicasts Received per Interval. I am receiving many ARP broadcast messages which is explains why Nonunicasts Received per Interval is at 5 or 6. Nonuncasts Sent per Interval is zero. The problem is with Nonunicasts Sent which is slowly increasing each second 1000, 1006, 1012, 1018, etc. Nonunicasts Received are at zero. The system is pretty idle, there are no other programs running so there is almost no other traffic etc... I know my system and network well. So it seems like a bug. The programmer accidently swapped these two statistics: Nonunicasts Received and Nonunicasts Sent. I am not sure if it is a windows xp bug or a windows xp driver bug. For the driver jobs, he wants the candidate to write a little driver... But if he would begin from nothing, this would take lot of time only to type in all the boilerplate code. So I'd rather let him start with a ready, "live" driver (maybe a DDK sample) and ask to add something, or find a bug. Using some real hardware would be great - if it won't take > 15 minutes to learn. Also the tasks should not require knowledge of all the tiny details of specific device classes such as HID, NDIS or storage (unless we're looking for somebody with exactly this experience). Dear Experts, can you suggest little tasks suitable for interview, that demonstrate common kernel mode skills or just common sense and intelligence? What could be the source of this error? What makes it necessary to open a file handle? Why can't I just call IoBuildDeviceIoControl to build a HID_GET_DEVICE_ATTRIBUTES IRP and send it down (I tried that, didn't work for some reason)?     - Udating public devmode with IPrintOemDriverUI::DrvUpdateUISetting Hello, I am working on a unidrv ui plug-in and I basically need to eliminate and replace all default UI. With some limitations we have been able to change the visual aspect of the UI completely by hiding all unwanted controls and adding new ones on the property initialization messages and by adding whole now property pages. However, now that we want to be able to store the information that the user selects, we are running in to problems. As an example, I have the following code: optOrientationItem = &cacheStruct.pOEMUIParam->pDrvOptItems[3]; iIndex = SendMessage(GetDlgItem( hDlg, IDC_COMBO_DPI),CB_GETCURSEL,0,0); optOrientationItem->Sel = iIndex; optOrientationItem->Flags |= OPTIF_CHANGEONCE; cacheStruct._piOEMHelp->DrvUpdateUISetting(cacheStruct.pOEMUIParam->poemuiobj, optOrientationItem, NULL, OEMCUIP_DOCPROP); In this case, OPITEM 3 is the print quality option. According to the docs, on DrvUpdateSetting, we must call this function whenever we change OPITEMS that correspond to the public devmode structure. It doesn't say what the call will do for me exactly, and that is where my question is. I am confused as to how to update the public devmode structure (as that is what I want) because that call produces different results if I am testing in notepad or if I am testing in excell. In excell, everyting works as one would expect. If I change the value of optOrientationItem->Sel and then call DrvUpdateUISetting, then once the property sheet's OK button is selected, the public devmode structure is updated with the proper value (I verify this by setting a data breakpoint on the appropriate memory address.... also when loading the property sheet again, the new values are provided). If I use the debugger to skip this call then the new value is not merged in to the devmode. In notepad, nothing seems to work. The results are the same wether I call DrvUpdateUISetting or if I skip it. It seems as if the call does nothing. One thing I can do is to allow the appropriate default control to display, change (through the GUI) it to mark it dirty and then change the value in my control. However, this is not really helpful in a real-world scenario. I have also tried modifying the devmode directly and this also does not seem to work. I am wondering why the two applications behave differently as the implementation for the function is in the unidrv dll and the parameters to the function look identical in each case (the values of optitem are almost the same in both cases... in excell, optOrientationItem->Flags has 0x80000000 set, and notepad only has this flag set if I first interact with the standard control... I can not find a defined, documented symbol for that flag in this context.) What is the proper way for updating the public devmode structure from within a unidrv ui plugin?     - Weird problem with WDM streaming driver installation I have 2 WDM video capture streaming drivers that I need. The two co-exist perfectly when they are installed together and work perfectly alright using PVR applications and/or graphedit, etc. However, on a system that already has some third party capture cards, these two drivers cause problems. When I install the two drivers, the system does a reboot either during the installation of the first driver or the second driver. This weird problem seems to be happening only on MCE systems and not on regular Windows XP(SP2 OR SP1) systems. There is nothing to suggest anything that I could be doing wrong in the driver. I also traced the SETUPAPI.LOG with the registry entry set to maximum verbose and it doesnt show anything wrong. Infact, there is no difference in the logs from the one on a failing system( MCE) and the one where it works(XP SP2 system) Also, one thing to note is that after the system reboots, when it comes back to the dekstop and I look in the device manager, all the possible Video Capture Streaming Drivers installed(like for instance Hauppauge, Conexant or any third part capture drivers) on the system(under Sound, Game and Video controller) have failed to load( denoted by a yellow mark under their name).
