More 64 bit porting issues
I hope someone can shed a little light here.
I am trying to install a driver based on the bulkusb sample. It was
recompiled successfully in an XP IA64 checked environment. The DDK is from
the July 2005 DVD. I'm using VS .net 2003. No warnings, compiler linker
state code being built for IA64.
The target machine is a Dell 380 (Pentium D) and XP x64 Edition Version 2003
SP1.
I'm building the driver on a 32-bit platform.
The inf file was modified to use the decorations for ntia64. That got me
beyond the "can't find software" hurdle.
The New Hardware wizard finds the driver OK and then complains about not
having a valid certificate but gives the option to install anyway. I select
OK to install anyway. It then states "...driver is not intended for this
platform".
I've also built it using the Windows Server 2003 DDK for IA64 with the same
results.
There must be something else?

How to detact a objects (Vector, text, or Image) in a customed printer driver
Any one had any experience on detecting a object in customed printer driver
level?
Unlike in UNIDRIVER, to detect vector objects I have to intercept
DrvFillPath, DrvStrokePath , but how to do it? It got to go through
interpret CLIPOBJ or other parameters of these functions.

I need some help on my current project.
According to MSDN's document, graphic drivers can optionally support
DrvGradientFill() by setting HOOK_GRADIENTFILL flag when it calls
EngAssociateSurface or EngModifySurface.
we have a costomed printer driver using a GDI managed surface with standard
bitmap
format. I was trying to recognize a graphic (vector) object (filled with a
Gradient color) by intercepting DrvGradientFill().
Somehow, if I hook up DrvGtadientFIll() in printer driver, and trying to
print a Gradient object from MS WORD 2003, GDI just calls DrvFillPath() and
DrvStretchblt(), never calls DrvGradientFill(),
Any body give me a hint?

Help me in writing win 2k Plug n Play driver for PCMCIA card
Hi Everybody,
We have win 2k device drivers(non plug n play) for PCI based add
on card.Now we started writing Windows 2K device drivers(WDM, Plug n
play) for 16 bit PCMCIA PC card.We are using ZILOG PCMCIA Adapter chip
in our card. We filled the device related information like port base
address,Port Range,Memory Range,Memory base and IRQ through Card
Information Structure(CIS) touples.
In case of pci card to detect a device we can check for Device ID and
Vendor ID.
How we can detect a PCMCIA device?
For PCI card drivers we will get allocated resources from
CM_RESOURCE_LIST structure. We can use that information as per
standardized PCI configuration registers.
In case of PCMCIA drivers, Allocated resources will be stored in the
same CM_RESOURCE_LIST structure or no? If yes, in which
format it is? Is it like same standardized PCI configuration
registers? or any?
Please guide me in writing the drivers for pcmcia card.
If any mistake I have done in explainig my problem or if Iam going in
a wrong way. Please guide me in right direction.

PCI Port Replication for boot drivers?
Greetings!
I've a situation where NIC drivers are bound to an NDIS IM driver and a
more regular filter driver, and in the process are made to be boot drivers
(Start=0), in order to get the virtual disks set up early enough in the boot
process (i.e. disk activity is sent across the network, and the presence of
disks is simulated to Windows). What I need to do is to-by hand it
appears-make the NIC appear as if its been installed in other slots-ones its
never been installed in-for clients with the same NIC in different slots
(same motherboard type). So basically I have to go to
HKLM/System/CCS/Enum/PCI/VendXX_DevXX.../ and create an entry for each slot I
want to go into. The entry here has the form A&B&C&D, where A,B,C,D are
numbers of unknown origin. A seems to correspond to PCI bus?, B is unknown,
C might be function, and D is unknown. One thing I could do is insert a card
in each PCI slot and see how they're rendered in the registry, but that's
non-deterministic to say the least. Any ideas about how I might otherwise
tackle this problem? I can't rely on the standard DIFx tools (at least as I
understand them) to pre-install a driver, because that requires PNP, which
comes later in the boot process for a boot driver-too late for me, it
appears. Any ideas are welcome...

transfer can never work right X-(
Now what's puzzling is that when I use pretty much the same code on
different _hardware_, AVStream generates correct mappings perfectly ok.
One noticeable difference between the hardware that works and the one that
AVStream generates invalid mappings for is that plugging in the latter card
reduces the memory displayed by the BIOS(!) from 4GB to 3.75GB, whereas the
working hardware does not.
So I figure there must be something about the PCI configuration space that
makes the BIOS reduce the available memory by 256MB _and_ Windows XP x64
generate incorrect scatter/gather DMA mappings.
But what could that be? And how can I work around that?

avstream/bda driver uninstallation and re-installation issues
Basically this has to do something with the sw-enumerated drivers.
I install the avstream/bda sample drivers by right clicking the inf
file. all is fine.
I un-install the drivers in this way..
1>Uninstalling from device manager
2>running rundll32 with streamingdeviceremove option.
I thought these 2 issues should be sufficient to remove the driver.
Now I wanted to update the driver and therefore, I copied the updated
drivers into the directory and installed the driver by right clicking
the INF file.For some reason it still installed the old drivers from
the previous install.
I found out that, this happens because Windows is caching the data in
repository directory under windows\system32\driverstore. if I remove
all references to my inf and drivers from the repository, then the
newer drivers get installed. But this all is just too messy.
Isnt there a better way ?
1>How do I update the drivers ? assuming I change something and want to
test them
2>un-install and reinstall them without going through and deleting
references to the INF and drivers that I had previously installed.

on receive miniport drivers are supposed to remove the tag header vlan
information and place it into the OOB data if the configured VLAN ID of
the NIC is 0 and the packet contains a tag header. Therefore, if a
packet was being received, it will have to go through the miniport
driver before ever reaching the MUX driver --- right? So wouldn't the
VLAN information be stripped out of the tag header and the MUX driver

XP log in notification
Hi all,
Is there an easy way to tell from a "C/C++" application if a user has logged
on to XP and the desktop is being displayed ? I'm seeing some problems
because I have a thread in my printer driver that XP starts up before any
users have logged in. And this thread tries to add a status icon in the
system tray. I get an error on Shell_NotifyIcon, and I'm assuming this is
because the login has not happened yet, because if I log on right away, there
is no problem.
There must be some function that returns this kind of system status, but I
can't seem to find it.

AVStream driver
On changing frequency from graphedit I expect to receive multiple calls to
the set property handler for KSPROPERTY_TUNER_FREQUENCY. Under what
circumstances would an AVStream driver receive just one call. Also this
follows a call for KSPROPERTY_TUNER_STATUS which is missing in my case. The
result of this misbehaviour is that the analog tuner control in graphedit

modifying the bios from a driver
I have recently inherited a driver for a family of PCI expansion products.
The driver is written in C++ and attempts to be one of those that supports
every OS/platform etc. known to man. This of course makes it incredibly hard
to maintain.
Simply the driver (filter to PCI.SYS) needs to discover the devices below it
and make sure there are enough resources to support them. (I/O and memory) If
need be, the driver modifies the PCI BIOS so that any bridges above it have
enough resources and then requests the user reboots. One of the products is a
carbus, so we don't know what resources we need at boot time which is the
reason for the reboot.
This driver broke with Windows XP SP2, I found a white paper that provided a
workaround located at the link

driver appears to still have the problem with the 64 bit AMD Turion (running
32 bit windows XP SP2). I suspect the problem is during the modification of
the BIOS. I can't seem to find a lot of documentation on how to do this. The
current driver does it by switching the machine to V86 mode and calling the
BIOS. Where can I find the correct documentation I need to figure out how to
modify the BIOS from a windows driver.
As I said the driver is hard to maintain, and there is a lot of code using
undocumented techniques in windows that are no longer supported for example
hooking on kernel functions. I would like to re-write the driver the correct
way (at least in my opinion), so I am attempting to collect all the info I
need. I'm also not locked into any method, if there is a simpler way to do
things that minimizes user interaction I'm all for it.

8GB nonpaged pool alloc
I am writing a driver for PCIe hardware that needs an 8GB system RAM
buffer. The memory does not have to be contiguous. Attempting a single
8GB nonpaged pool memory allocation using ExAllocatePool fails. System
has 32GB and running Windows 64-bit. Is this possible? If not, how much

IP reassembly timeout
Is there a way to set the IP reassembly timeout on win2k/XP systems ?
When an IP fragment is lost, the partial IP packet will remain alive until
the reassembly timer expires. When the Microsoft TCP/IP layer runs out of
free Reassembly headers (100 by default) all IP fragments are dropped until
one of the pending reassembly expires. Which means that in the worst case
quickly loosing 100 IP fragments from different IP packets will cause all
incoming fragmented IP traffic to be discarded for 60 seconds !!!!
On top of that with a 60 sec timeout (the current default value), the 16bit
IP Identification field can wrap easily in realistic usage scenarios causing
many other problems.
We tried changing the MaximumReassemblyHeaders registry key, and it does not
really help since using a significantly higher value (e.g. 1000) causes a
huge performance degradation (e.g. mouse pointer close from frozen). Changing
the number of reassembly headers also does not help with the IP
identification field wrapping problem.
Also there used to be a 'IpReassemblyTimeout' registry key but apparently it
has been removed in some version of NT.

The problem I found that this sample produce BSOD on system shutdown.

Another install/INF question
I have a strange (to me) problem installing a driver.
I've written a MIDI miniport that installs and works fine on my development
machine. Installation on the test machine appears to work OK, but in fact
the ActiveMovie\devenum registry keys aren't being created in the test
environment. (( The end result is that the device only shows up as "input"
to apps on the test machine, instead of "input" AND "output" as it does on
the dev box ))
Dev and test machine are both WinXP Pro, SP2 etc.
I'm using the exact same INF and sys files in both cases. How does one
"trace" the install/registry key creation process?

How can we prevent USB devices from being detected and allow only specific
types of devices to be detected?
e.g. We should allow users to connect only USB Memory. If user connects USB

problems with NetBT
Hi all,
I try to do a software bridge using NDIS IM. My computer has two NICs each
connected into one network segment. The idea was that in created (logical)
networ my computer would have two IP adresses (for each NIC one), so it
should look like a multihomed computer.
Problem occured when I tryed to "use" created network using "My
Neighbourhood". Sometimes everything works fine, but sometimes not and
message "Network Path Not Found" appears when I try to show list of
computers in workgroup. It happens ussually in situation when a NetBT
packets are sent into one network segment using (as source) IP address of
NIC connected to the other one. There shouldn't be problem in used IP
address, my computer should have same behaviour for both IP's (associated
with my NICs). Can there be any conflict inside of NetBT ?
Any ideas are welcome.

why is the checked build of usbvideo.sys smaller than free build version?
Hi,
I am trying to get the checked build of USBvideo.sys loaded instead of
free version. I extracted the debug build from the SP2 debug build self
extracting archive downloaded from msdn.
After replacing the freee build with checked build I realise that the
driver wasn't even loading and the size of teh debug build is smaller than

BDA driver, question about get properties from node
We write a BDA driver which have two nodes, one is Tuner node and the other
is Demod node, and we let the driver support all the property sets (for BDA)
defined in DDK, like KSPROPSETID_BdaAutodemodulate,
KSPROPSETID_BdaDigitalDemodulator, KSPROPSETID_BdaSignalStats ...etc.
But we found that some properties can not access form our utility, for
example, we define KSPROPSETID_BdaSignalStats in Demod node, but only
KSPROPERTY_BDA_SIGNAL_QUALITY and KSPROPERTY_BDA_SIGNAL_LOCKED can be
accessed, other ID like KSPROPERTY_BDA_SIGNAL_STRENGTH is fail to access. If
we define this property in Tuner node, all ID can get.
Another example is that, although we define KSPROPSETID_BdaAutodemodulate
in Demod node, but it fail when QueryInterface for this interface. Strangely,
call GetNodeInterfaces on Demod node, it return IBDA_AutoDemodulate is exist.

driver fails to get the packet from

But what I confuse is the difference of HeaderBuffer and LookAheadBuffer.
How can I check the content of the received packet and indicate the target
packet to the upper layer if PtReceive can not get the packet from
NdisGetReceivedPacket directly?

I am facing a strange issue :
I have a WDM USB filter driver which I built using the WinXP free build
environment of Win XP DDK (2600.1106)
It works fine in Win 2K and Win XP
However it crashes in Win Me and Win 98 Gold
If however I build the same filter driver using the Win 2000 free build
environment of Win XP DDK (2600.1106) ,it works fine in Win 98 Gold .
Can I not build drivers for Win 98 Gold by using the Win XP free build

to halt the process of request in its queue. As description in DDK, I

Can't print to minidriver from 32-bit apps on XP 64-bit
I have a 64-bit banding minidriver compiled with GCAPS_DONTJOURNAL (no
EMF spooling) on Windows XP 64-bit AMD.
- Wordpad.exe * 32 submits print job but it is discarded (DrvEndDoc is
not called). There is no error in the system event log. All document
events are received except DOCUMENTEVENT_ENDPAGE.
- Wordpad.exe (64-bit) prints OK on regular port (DOCUMENTEVENT_ENDPAGE
is signalled). But when I change the port to FILE: Wordpad.exe (64-bit)
hangs when you print...
msplot sample (compiled with GCAPS_DONTJOURNAL) works OK in all cases.

Security token design question
There is a smartcard chip embedded in a PnP device of completely irrelevant
class. It is not exposed as independent hardware function.
The chip can be accessed only thru the driver of this device.
How I can make this chip visible to CryptoAPI from user mode?
Can this be done with a user mode module that sends custom ioctls to the
driver?
Or I need a root enumerated driver that emulates a Smartcard reader?
Can such "virtual" smartcard readers pass HCT?

Sending data to Port Monitor from Print Processor.
Hi.
I have a filter that converts the EMF in the spooler file to XML
(someone else made the filter). Now I want to send that XML to my Port
Monitor. Is is even possible, and how do I do it? Do I use
InitializePrintMonitor2 and OpenPort to get the port, and then just
send data to the port with WritePrinter?
The Genprint-sample just plays the EMF, but I don't want to do that.

How to debug INF file for Windows 98?
Hello,
currently, I am having the glorious task to make a driver which works on
Windows 2000 and XP compatible to Windows 98 and Me.
Anyway, whenever I try to install that device on Windows 98, the "Add
new hardware wizard" crashes in Rundll32. If I try it a second time, I
get a message stating me that the installation was aborted. I see that
none of my files has been copied into the system directories.
Now, I thought I might try to debug the installation process via the
SetupAPI logging facility
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\LogLevel).
Unfortunately, it seems this is not possible on Win 98, at least, I did
not find anything mentioned about it either in the 2K3 SP1 DDK, nor in
the 98 DDK.
I generated a minimal INF file out of it where I even removed everything
NT specific. Anyway: No chance, the wizard keeps crashing.
Now, which possibilities do I have in debugging the problem? I must
admit, I do not have any 98/Me experience, being always working on NT
based systems.
BTW: If my WDM driver uses OS calls which are NT only, could this result
in the crashing of the add hardware wizard?
I uploaded a version of the INF to
http://www.trikaliotis.net/download/test.inf, in case someone wants to
have a look into it.
The INF passes chkinf (with 1 Error: ClassGUID not recognized, which is
not very surprising is this is a new Class GUID) and 1 warning (about
using DefaultDestDir, which is intentional). Additionally, if run on a
Win XP system, it copies the file correctly into the destination dir
(the INF is so much stripped down that nothing more is inside of it).

Problems with connecting to gprs using RAS
Hi,
I am using RasDial() to connect to gprs network using my T-Mobile Pocket PC
in my application. The problem is that RasDial() returns successfully and
after that whenever I call RasGetConnectStatus() and RasGetLinkStatistics(),
these functions return me status connected and other parameters like connect
time etc etc. But if I try to browse internet using iexplorer then i am not
unable to do so. Also I write another application which uses
GetAdapterInfo() API to know the IP address currently assigned to my Pocket
PC by gprs network but after calling this API my another application which
opens RAS connection terminated abruptly and the connection is terminated.
Can anyone please help me what is wrong? or what am i missing here?

invoked by any user mode program. I assume there is some kind of protection
of this unlikely use by "bad" program . How is it made? How system

GPRS Problem..Unable to make PPP work over gprs

I am writing an application on my T-mobile Pocket PC which opens com port 2
(port of my built in gsm modem) and I can connect to my gprs network using
atd*99***1# at command. But I am unable to make PPP work over gprs then. Can

I need to know the actual .dll e.g. Halacpi or Halaacpi etc being used on a
,machine under the garb of hal.dll. What is the most elegant way to dig that
info out programmatically?
